Can we get a disagree button?

Can we get a disagree or dislike button?
We are all adults and i'm tired of 'laughing' at posts i disagree with.

Its pretty obvious when the laughing emoji is misused

You’re using the laugh emoji to disagree? How unpleasant are you.

If you disagree, have the manners to do so on the actual thread, with your reasons for the disagreement.

Yes, using 'funny' for "I disagree" is extremely passive aggressive.

I was involved in a discussion about a 'dislike' button on a thread on Site Stuff recently, and agreed that I'd potentially like one; however this post has now got me thinking: if you like or agree with a post, then an emoji is great, with no point in just reposting/repeating what somebody else said; but if you don't agree... surely that's exactly the whole beauty of a discussion forum!

harriethoyle · 07/03/2025 16:48

@hairyunicorn I’m finding you quite funny but now I’m frightened of using the laugh emoji in case you think I’m disagreeing with you 🤭

Boomer55 · 07/03/2025 16:51

ScottBakula · 07/03/2025 13:26

Why on earth would you use the laughing emoji to disagree with someone.

I wouldn't want a disagree emoji, if you disagree with me let me know why and I can explain why I think / feel that way or we can just agree that we have different options, you know, like grown ups

This. If you disagree, a short post is good. Other than that your opinion is not relevant really. 🙄🤷‍♀️,

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2025 16:56

Also, if an OP actually wants simple agree/disagree reactions, they can do an AIBU with voting.

Hahaha... @harriethoyle I wouldn't mind either way 😁

I think making it all viewable by others on the thread would be helpful.

It would save the many posts of quotes that say:

"This."

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 07/03/2025 19:17

Yanbu, we really need this

Could also be good to see how many times a comment has been liked

BIWI · 07/03/2025 19:23

No! That leads to all kinds of competitiveness and general unpleasant ‘jostling’.

See reddit for up/downvoting.

I’ve received the laugh emoji when talking about my disability. You’re not one of those are you?

We’ve managed perfectly well without any of these silly ‘reactions’ for decades, of course we don’t ’really need this’.

😭😭 omg okay

Tbf I've been on mumsnet for about a year, maybe a little more, so didn't realise that reactions were a newer thing

BIWI · 07/03/2025 19:32

@OhNoPleaseNotScabies you’ve used the laugh button too. Care to explain why?

Make it visible now @OnlyHerefortheBiscuits now that's really controversial!

No doubt the masses will be along to tell you how wrong you are and how much they hate that idea 🙄

Sorry, I’m getting to be a grumpy old woman at the moment…. Maybe that’s why I don’t want overly easy negative reactions on MN.

😄💕 that's okay, I'm grumpy at men tbh, even when I see one pass by me I want to downvote their existence

SunsetCocktails · 07/03/2025 19:43

Those of us who use the app can't see any of the reactions anyway so it seems pretty pointless to me. Laugh away at my posts, I'll be none the wiser.

Roosmarjin · 07/03/2025 19:47

I used to help moderate a forum where they removed the disagree button. They found it improved discussion as people weren't just disagreeing and not leaving comments

Does the app stop you getting notifications that you've had a reaction?

SunsetCocktails · 07/03/2025 20:04

@B1indEye you don't get any notifications on the app (to my knowledge anyway, I certainly don't)

WeylandYutani · 07/03/2025 20:08

I posted on a thread about how my autism affected me, and someone did a laugh react on it. It was obviously not a funny post but it seems some are using it in a way it was not intended.

I'm sorry you received that , there's no need for that .
If someone disagrees with a post state why or move on.

No, but you can turn them off in the settings. You’ve just reminded me to do this.

Me too.
I don't think there is much point in a disagree button.
