Can we get a disagree button?

Can we get a disagree or dislike button?
We are all adults and i'm tired of 'laughing' at posts i disagree with.

Yea why not do a range of bully buttons.

Or read and move on with your day if you are unwilling to disagree in MNs public view

Happyinarcon · 07/03/2025 13:43

I would use the laugh emoji for funny posts, it’s good to see people on here with a sense of humour

GreenWheat · 07/03/2025 13:43

I prefer it as it is. I think lots of people have an instant unkind reaction but can't be bothered to post. Having some form of negativity button gives them an easy way to flame, when given a few minutes to reflect, they might realise they are better off just scrolling by.

What a terrible idea

Well it is OP. Laugh emoji at me all you want but it is just bullying. Even if you disagree, no one will see it.

chocmalt · 07/03/2025 14:19

You know this is never going to happen, right? It's not in the spirit of the site. 😅

5128gap · 07/03/2025 14:23

Is that what people are using the laugh for? Here's me thinking I'd suddenly become hilarious. Was planning my set for Edinburgh.

B1indEye · 07/03/2025 14:24

Id read on other threads that people used the laugh emoji to be nasty, I was a bit sceptical because what kind of person would think of that but clearly I was wrong

gamerchick · 07/03/2025 14:28

I wouldn't have any of them me..was better when it was clean and uncluttered.

Encouraging bullying isn't something this place needs.

You're misusing the laugh button then. If you disagree with someone what's wrong with saying so?

TY78910 · 07/03/2025 14:31

I remember reading somewhere that the reaction buttons are purposefully not what they are on other platforms (thumbs up for 'agree' as opposed to like and clap for 'thanks' as opposed to well done brilliant point' to minimise bullying type behaviour. If you post something and it gets disliked 100 times it can make people feel low to an extent. I think it's also the reason you can't publicly see the reactions posts have, to eliminate a 'social status' on MN

I'm rather surprised to see "we are all adults" coupled with a disinclination to use words to disagree with someone.

By saying 'we are all adults' I just meant that we should all be able to handle someone disagreeing with us on a public forum.

And you still felt it necessary to use the laugh button on my post?

SoundedCat · 07/03/2025 14:45

desperatedaysareover · 07/03/2025 12:48

People are 😆ing to be negative? God this is terrible news I thought I was funny AF

What would be the purpose, I can’t think what it would add in an already fairly combative community. The OP won’t see it and there’s no shortage of posters fully ready to throw down/ tell you you’re talking shite and they think you’re a prick. Look at S&B and a gentle wee post like ‘Here’s another green dress you might like’ and some charmer posts to say it’s absolutely vile and makes them physically sick or whatever.

I reckon if I’m moved to pointedly disagree, as opposed to just offer an alternative POV, I’d also want the OP to know why (like there’s an inaccuracy or dangerous advice or something). So why not just post?

Edited

I laughed at your post because your first few lines were funny... Just wanted to clarify that!

stayathomer · 07/03/2025 14:46

I find it so patronising when people’laugh’ at a serious point you’ve made. Laughing should surely only be for something funny!

Terrribletwos · 07/03/2025 14:46

I think the Washington Post has some comment reaction options that are quite good. For example, disagree, thoughtful, provocative, clarifying, new to me....

I've not seen the buttons on the NYP but they sound great. would love a thoughtful or provocative button. That would be really useful

It's really bad manners - not something in the OP's awareness seemingly.

So that's why you're continuing with your inappropriate use of the reactions? I'd be tempted to agree with your assessment but I'd be concerned about it being deemed a personal attack. What do you get out of coming on a forum to be unpleasant to people?

Oh come on, it really isn't that serious.
I wouldn't usually thrown around so many laughing emojis, but as it's my thread about using the laughing emoji. I thought i would get a pass this time

There was a long thread about this and people can't even handle the laughing emoji. They would properly melt down if somebody had the temerity to DISAGREE with them.

I don’t mind a discussion about something where people disagree. Sometimes it has upset me, sometimes infuriates me and yes, on a bad day someone just bashing the disagree button without a second thought could lead me to a very dark place.
ask for clarity, discuss the point of disagreement.
But just bashing that “your wrong” button is not very nice.
