Son has chickenpox party scheduled for next week

Hi guys,

My son was sent home yesterday from nursery with chickenpox and we have a birthday party planned for him next Saturday (8 days away).

Should we cancel, or go ahead as planned?

Has anyone else experienced this? Should it have cleared up by then?

AIBU to go ahead with the party.

Thanks in advance.

Should have all scanned over after 5 days.

I'd wait 3/4 days and see how he is before making a decision.

For some children chicken pox is an annoyingly itchy condition.

For some they are quite unwell with it.

Completelyjo · 07/03/2025 07:36

Chicken pox often lasts over a week, you would be outrageously unreasonable to have your son at a party while he is infectious.

SemperIdem · 07/03/2025 07:36

I read your title as you had a scheduled “chickenpox party” and thought you were mad!

I think after 8 days he won’t be infectious anymore but might still be a bit scabby.

Edited as I realise now that you are in fact the hosts 🤦🏻‍♀️ give the parents of those invited the heads up and see what they think.

Maray1967 · 07/03/2025 07:37

Warn the other parents and tell them you’ll make a decide on X day. Hope he has an easy bout of it as my two did.

TwentyTwentyFive · 07/03/2025 07:38

He's unlikely to still be infectious in 8 days time and the spots will have scabbed over, it's normally 5-7 days from first spot. My biggest worry would be that if you're inviting nursery friends then you're likely to have lots not come as the other children will probably still be in the getting spots stage.

KrisAkabusi · 07/03/2025 07:38

You have to let other parents know and let them decide.

BackToRealitySigh · 07/03/2025 07:39

He should be fine - most kids are. Can you wait a few days and call it Tues/Weds?
For reference my oldest had first spots friday & was fully scabbed over and back at school by weds. Her sister 2 weeks later was a day or 2 longer

Ferrazzuoli · 07/03/2025 07:39

He probably won't be infectious by then (if all spots have scabbed over) but you should warn the other parents and they may decide not to come, so maybe better just to cancel.

JollyGreenSleeves · 07/03/2025 07:40

From the nhs website- If you have chickenpox, you'll need to stay off school, nursery or work until all the spots have formed a scab. This is usually 5 days after the spots first appeared.

So at 8 days he is likely to be no longer contagious but this doesn’t mean he will be feeling well. I would let parents know now that there is a possibility you may cancel and why, and make the decision day 6 if he is feeling well in himself.

Mindymomo · 07/03/2025 07:40

I would leave the decision to cancel maybe Monday/Tuesday next week, depending on whether the spots are healing well and how your DC is doing.

Me too, a time when punctuation does really matter 🤣

My DS go chicken pox day before his 1st birthday, we cancelled but said anyone whose DC has had it can come round. I wasn't going to be responsible for passing it on, in some instances it can be life threatening/changing and I wouldn't take that chance unnecessarily.

AllyDally · 07/03/2025 07:42

Sorry I should have said, if they were all scabbed over withno new ones appearing then I would go ahead.

AllotmentTime · 07/03/2025 07:42

I would cancel on the basis that probably a fair few guests won't be able to come. Probably easier to cancel now and have that certainty than be worrying that he'll still have "open" spots and be infectious, and/or that the party will be too short on numbers.

Lovelysummerdays · 07/03/2025 07:43

I think five days was average to have spots scabbed over. One of mine was still getting new spots on day five and another was completely recovered after a mild case. I’d give 3/4 days and you’ll know which way it’s going. Give parents a heads up in case there is anyone vulnerable. It tends to spread like wildfire as infectious before spots so may find half the class are down if that’s where his guests are coming from.

Bloodybrambles · 07/03/2025 07:43

Wasn’t chickenpox parties used to be a thing? I think I was deliberately sent on a play date with a girl with chicken pox.

Glorybox2025 · 07/03/2025 07:44

And this is why punctuation is important!

Overthebow · 07/03/2025 07:45

He may be ok by then, but he may not. If green all spots are scanned over by then and not infectious anymore, but there’s a chance he’ll get it badly and they won’t be. Wait a few days and see, no need to cancel right now as if he has it mildly it’ll likely be fine to go ahead.

SatsumaDog · 07/03/2025 07:46

I would cancel and reschedule when you can be sure he’s recovered. If that’s not an option I would just be open with other parents and let them make the decision, but be prepared for some not to come. Bad luck op, I hope your wee one recovers quickly.

minnienono · 07/03/2025 07:47

Should be fine, both of mine were back at school a week after the first spots

BlumminFreezin · 07/03/2025 07:47

You're one week exactly behind us.

Ds3 came out in his first chickenpox last Thursday evening. His first day back in school is today...they're now all scabbed over. So including first and last day, it was 8 days in total. Although we could have sent him in yesterday I think.

Greenwich869 · 07/03/2025 07:49

Cutting it finely. My niece just had chicken pox and she was fine after a week but she still had spots/scans for another few days. So really it took her about 10 days to fully recover.

ItShouldntHappenToMeYet · 07/03/2025 07:51

Your son is going to a chicken pox party?!

PorkHollywood · 07/03/2025 07:52

Yeah a comma would be helpful 🤣

CleanShirt · 07/03/2025 07:52

This thread title really shows the importance of punctuation 😅

Avelina · 07/03/2025 07:54

I also thought this meant he was going to a chicken pox party and thought what the fuck
