To be confused by benefits cuts to the disabled and ill?

1000 replies

AllyHayHay · 06/03/2025 20:27

As luck would have it, I have not been in this position, but I do know of one disabled lady who has struggled. She was incredibly fortunate to already own her own home prior to her accident.

I am not what you'd call politically astute, but I have been reading about the proposed spring benefits cuts and wonder why people always discuss this ONLY affecting the sick and disabled.
I am also aware that there are many, many rough areas with families who have never worked, people who are struggling with addiction, prison sentences (their kids, spouse, etc) and these people never seem to be included in the Guardian articles and opinion pieces online.

Why would a system wish to make the life of a disabled person worse, yet ignore the growing issues of illiteracy, generational poverty and other issues which are going on in most urban areas just out of sight of the comfortably off?
Why not address the reasons that great swathes of people are living on benefits across the UK who are NOT disabled? I imagine this would drag up questions of why those issues persist - and no one in government wants to address that.

Since benefits claimants who are not in work of on the pension are a minority, are these cuts more of a populist tendency?

Is this the job? Swansea Health Board

It’s not home-based is it? So it in no way meets the poster’s needs. And the requirements are really specific:

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
Diploma in administration or equivalent
Demonstrate ability to use computer programmes
Experience
Essential criteria
Knowledge and experience of a range of administration procedure
Experience of working within the NHS
Experience and knowledge in using nursing system e.g. rostering

It’s completely ridiculous to suggest this job is one just anyone could apply for and get. Do you accept this @ChilliLips ?

It’s almost like there are actually very few home-based jobs suitable for disabled people out there.

Ouch!

No, it was on Jobs24. It’s not remote working but why can’t the poster travel to work? I can search for fully remote jobs, but I don’t get the issue in a presumably fairly short commute.

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 14/03/2025 21:00

Just had a look, I only meet 3 of their 5 essential criteria so I don't think I'd get past the sift 😭
I never see their vacancies on indeed etc though so I've added the main health board website to my list of job seeking bookmarks, thank you 🙏 if I'm going to get a job outside of the house, a hospital is probably the safest bet 🤣

No worries, if they’re disability confident I would keep checking. My employer is and has been v good with me and I have very generous sick day entitlement. The job I found was on Jobs24 (PA/admin), think it was different to the one above as it seemed very entry level.

But this is what's frustrating and invalidating. You don't get the issue with a short commute. But that doesn't mean there isn't one. There could be a very valid one. It's a tired narrative which considers only one perspective.

Unless they’re home bound or in a wheelchair I fail to see the issue, it’s a normal expectation.

There's good public transport to Morriston Hospital (it's a big local employer), I know the area and it's a hospital so it's one of few non-remote jobs I could potentially do, if they'll overlook me having no diploma in admin and no experience rostering!

I'm limited to home or somewhere with excellent public transport links (as in, drops off basically outside), which isn't easily found in this part of south Wales 😅

I couldn't do it as I dont travel on public transport alone.

There's more than 2 conditions, that's my point. It's not "homebound or in wheelchair". I'm not going to list them all but to only accept there are two reasons you could not routinely work from home is a really limited perspective.

Apply!!!!! It sounds perfect for you. What have you got to lose? You can probably look up the disability confident employer scheme to see what your rights would be.

Nadiaelgato · 14/03/2025 21:17

ChilliLips · 14/03/2025 21:15

Why?

Oh God. Why do you need people's specific conditions? What do you want? A grim reading list? OK: brain tumour causing seizures with intermittent severe vertigo and partial blindness. Are you happy?

To be fair I did ask the PP as they joined in. There’s no expectation of anyone to provide their medical history but if you allude to something, somebody may well ask.

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 14/03/2025 20:04

Just so we're clear, should I warn potential employers that I'll likely be absent a lot, get fatigued out of nowhere and am not allowed to do potentially dangerous tasks like cooking, using hot water etc unsupervised before I get the job, or afterwards? I need to get my CV brushed up seeing as I'm perfect for a job at Lidl.

Of course not.
In the same way that anyone who actually wanted a job wouldn't be highlighting any negative aspects of their situation/circumstances.

LoztWorld · 14/03/2025 21:19

@ChilliLips Your specific claim was that you could find “plenty” of wfh admin jobs.

It turns out that’s not the case so now you’re saying well disabled people don’t need wfh jobs anyway unless they use a wheelchair or are housebound (not sure what you would consider housebound, seems quite vague).

And it is the same job I posted, by the way: Jobs24

CalicoPusscat · 14/03/2025 21:25

I really feel for people who have dependents; I wish the government had worked it out a bit better before announcing vague plans as it's coming across as 'we're going to rap you on the knuckles' in a blame way like you're back at school and skiving

I followed the link to apply to the entry level one and it says it's now closed :( but I'm going to put together an application for the one that's still open. Hopefully they have very few applicants and won't be too brutal in the sift 😅

LoztWorld · 14/03/2025 21:29

ChilliLips · 14/03/2025 21:19

This was the job I saw

https://www.jobs24.co.uk/job/personal-assistant-senior-administrative-officer-124726444?utm_campaign=google_jobs_apply&utm_source=google_jobs_apply&utm_medium=organic

It’s only asking for fairly basic admin skills as far as I can see such as computer literacy.

That job is actually closed, although for some reason Jobs24 doesn’t show that. It also doesn’t show the essential criteria. But the same (now closed) vacancy also appears on NHS jobs and other sites, and the essential criteria listed there are actually far more specific and demanding than in the job I posted. More experience required, not less. The fact it has “senior” in the title is the tip-off.

This really isn’t as easy as you want it to be!

mini124 · 14/03/2025 21:30

I was on long term sick for different health issues, I have struggled to keep a down a job as my health can make it very difficult to commit. Eventually I got fed up of becoming isolated. I slowly forced myself into work by doing a work placement to become familiar with the work environment. I am also hearing impaired but still willing to try and improve my opportunities. I suffer with anxiety especially social anxiety due to my hearing needs. I eventually got offered a job from placement! Well guess what ? I accepted thinking I will get support from access to work ! 7 months into job I am still waiting. So if the government wishes to force sick people into work, they need to ensure that the support is in place to prevent them from finding it difficult & to stay in work! Let me make you aware, I am worse off financially slightly but choose to stay in employment because long term it will open more opportunities. Not all of us want to abuse the benefit system. I wasn’t forced to look for work either !

Good luck ☘️ I do really hope you get it! Despite my posts here I am not trying to be off-putting about your (or anyone’s) work prospects. Just frustrated by a lack of engagement with reality from the “just get a job” bunch.

Fingers crossed here too :)

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 14/03/2025 21:44

Thanks all 🤞🤞🤞 after seemingly endless instant rejections from these nationwide work from home jobs, I'd settle for an interview. I'd settle for an acknowledgement even 🤣

5 years time I'll be a cyber security expert and this will all be behind me 😎 (or dead, #braintumourlife ✌️ but I'm looking on the positive side!)

ChilliLips · 14/03/2025 21:47

Well the thread has taken a nice positive turn! Indeed have probably changed my search settings now so if any more jobs come up in the Swansea area I will PM them to you 😂

ChilliLips · 14/03/2025 21:48

Equally if anyone else wants me to take a look for them, I would be more than happy. We might get lucky on the thread?!
