To be confused by benefits cuts to the disabled and ill?

1000 replies

AllyHayHay · 06/03/2025 20:27

As luck would have it, I have not been in this position, but I do know of one disabled lady who has struggled. She was incredibly fortunate to already own her own home prior to her accident.

I am not what you'd call politically astute, but I have been reading about the proposed spring benefits cuts and wonder why people always discuss this ONLY affecting the sick and disabled.
I am also aware that there are many, many rough areas with families who have never worked, people who are struggling with addiction, prison sentences (their kids, spouse, etc) and these people never seem to be included in the Guardian articles and opinion pieces online.

Why would a system wish to make the life of a disabled person worse, yet ignore the growing issues of illiteracy, generational poverty and other issues which are going on in most urban areas just out of sight of the comfortably off?
Why not address the reasons that great swathes of people are living on benefits across the UK who are NOT disabled? I imagine this would drag up questions of why those issues persist - and no one in government wants to address that.

Since benefits claimants who are not in work of on the pension are a minority, are these cuts more of a populist tendency?

Just one example I can think of off the top of my head is Crohn’s disease. I know someone who suffers with this who is unable to work for exactly this reason. She mostly is okay actually but she has completely brutal flare-ups that can go on for a very long time.

I know someone with this condition also. Who has on occasion had to terminate a trip out, and go straight back home, due to soiling herself. She has had terrible trouble with her condition, that has affected not only her education, due to being so poorly, and working world.

Work from home admin?

Hundreds of people going for one position - I've got a great CV, can't even get an interview. So many of them are hybrid too, with compulsory meetings in London or Manchester etc - both very far from me, I can't drive and couldn't travel that far unaccompanied.

Like I said earlier, I'm applying, I'm doing uni part time - it just feels like nothing I do is enough.

bestcatlife · 14/03/2025 20:11

Everyone wants a work from home admin job @ChilliLips but there are none. (If you know of any please point me in the right direction........)

What evidence would you give for the showering?

I wouldn’t use showering as it would be hard to prove, however plenty of other ways to prove her sensory issues and distraction as she has 7 NHS diagnosis(1 pending )which include autism and sensory processing, an Ed psyc report, diagnosis reports, multiple admission details letters from professionals, multiple meeting minutes, prescriptions, OT history….alongside plenty of other ways she is impacted that bump up her points anyway.

Where do you live? If it’s near to me I know of several.

Fjgjam · 14/03/2025 20:14

My daughter can’t work. She will one day however it needs to be at her pace unless the government wants her to lose the progress she has made alongside running up expensive hospitalisation bills.

Sadly I think that by going after the most vulnerable sections of Society, it is going to cost this Government dearly. They really are making a mistake here, imo.

The comment about forcing couples to live together is mad.. ok if you're married or in a civil partnership (obviously!) but I wouldn't recommend anyone leave a secure tenancy or mortgage to live with a short term partner, watch the DA cases skyrocket if this happened. There are some really (one) clueless poster(s) on this thread. Agh why do I always get sucked into these benefits bashing threads!?
I'm just so sorry for anyone going through this and I'm stressed and scared myself (work part time but with health issues) I'm so infuriated by this government.

Why would the DA skyrocket?

What a stupid question. I’ll suited couples forced together and let’s not even think about the impact on children.

So you know what qualifications the poster has, what are asked for, the experience needed, her previous work history, her disability and how it impacts her, what their views on potential for sick leave….. all in one advert. Wow!

LoztWorld · 14/03/2025 20:44

If you can find no-experience-needed WFH vacancies suitable for that poster that’s great, but that’s hardly the end of it is it? Such jobs are in high demand and employers will be very selective. Not saying it’s not worth applying, but let’s be realistic.

I know! Some of the comments here are ridiculous.
There are many a thread on here about moving in a partner, and a lot of replies say not for anyone to be 100% financially dependant on someone else. I have been in that precarious position, and I will not do it again. I will also be classed as the female version of a cocklodger, which MNetters also tell others to run away from.
But yes, the bloated welfare bill (and housing crisis) is due to people like me wanting to live alone.

There’s an admin assistant job going at the Swansea Health Board. The ad says they’re a disability confident employer and they’re welcoming applications from people with disabilities. Sounds great!

You can do your weeding, mow your lawn and hold a barbecue, you can work at Lidl. Simples.

It's not "simples". One year, I was so ill I didn't leave the house for 7 months. I couldn't stand, I could barely move. I'm not going into details about it but it was physical. The only joy I got that entire summer was my family coming over and cooking the barbecue which I then ate. You really, really don't get it.

Yes, my ex is autistic and applied for a job with Asda. Not shop floor, but in IT. He was weeded out by the test too, despite IT being the career of choice for a lot of autistic people. He was super experienced, loads of references and qualifications. Failed the multiple choice test so his CV not even looked at.

The employment levels for people with autism is not great, and that is not for lack of trying. Employers want square pegs to fit in round holes.

If disabled people are going to be in work, then employers need to give them a chance.

Those questions are just awful. Hopefully something will be done to simplify application processes as things the these questions just make it frustrating and near impossible.

Just had a look, I only meet 3 of their 5 essential criteria so I don't think I'd get past the sift 😭
I never see their vacancies on indeed etc though so I've added the main health board website to my list of job seeking bookmarks, thank you 🙏 if I'm going to get a job outside of the house, a hospital is probably the safest bet 🤣

Is this the job? Swansea Health Board

It’s not home-based is it? So it in no way meets the poster’s needs. And the requirements are really specific:

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
Diploma in administration or equivalent
Demonstrate ability to use computer programmes
Experience
Essential criteria
Knowledge and experience of a range of administration procedure
Experience of working within the NHS
Experience and knowledge in using nursing system e.g. rostering

It’s completely ridiculous to suggest this job is one just anyone could apply for and get. Do you accept this @ChilliLips ?

It’s almost like there are actually very few home-based jobs suitable for disabled people out there.
