To think Netflix isn't worth it anymore?

It's really gone down hill. Hardly any new content and mostly old shows or shows with subtitles (which is fine but not as the majority of offers).

Anyone else cancelling?

My teens love the animations on Netflix, the current obsession is Arcane which looks gorgeous. I can usually find something to watch, just finished The Diplomat which was good (I know I'm way behind there) but I don't watch much on TV so Netflix and iplayer keep me happy.

EsmaCannonball · 06/03/2025 15:05

They need everything to become an international hit so they are making shows which are clickbaity but flavourless, lacking in any kind of identity or authorial voice. A lot of the good stuff is old stuff, made by organisations such as the BBC and Channel 4 back in the days when they were less risk-averse. The film selection is dire.

My problem is that I love old films and old TV shows that streaming services have little interest in showing. My DVD player is on the blip and not many places sell them any more.

It's the "paradox of choice" - the more choice you have the more you feel like there are no acceptable options. My partner spends 45 minutes choosing to watch something before bed and is then asleep within 5 minutes of starting it.

So true i found tv in the 80,s when we only had 3 thsn 4 channels so much better!

wknobur · 06/03/2025 15:37

I cancelled it three years ago because there wasn't enough new content I wanted to watch. I went back on in December for Squid Game and to watch the rest of The Crown and since then I've found quite a lot of things I want to watch that have been added in the last three years.
I'm learning Norwegian so I'm enjoying watching some series and films in Norwegian and so it's worth it for that.
However, I can see that in 9 months to a year I'll have run out of things I want to watch so I'll cancel it again for a while and go back on at a later date.

Just cancel it if you don't think it's worth it. When I cancelled it the last time I went on Amazon Prime for a while and watched a few things on there but I thought the content on there was worse than Netflix so I cancelled that after a while and then started picking up very cheap DVDs on second hand sites and watched them.

You don't have to stick to the same streaming service and pay for things you don't think are worth it.

IEatSauerkrautBeforeItWasCool · 06/03/2025 15:40

They push out ton of shit and 1 or 2 great things. The latter is to make people think it's still worthit

I am looking to return to piratebay type of watching tbh😂
The streaming serbices are getting VERY greedy and to have good choices, you need to pay for more than 2 really. Ads etc. It's just... Not as simple and cheap anymore

Recently I've enjoyed Apple Cider Vinegar and am currently psrt way through watching Toxic Town, Silent Sea, Deadwind and A Nearly Normal Family.

I definitely still find lots to watch.

Oooh will give them a look

Just cancelled my sub. I rarely watch it. They were putting it up by £2 a month so I asked my teenage DCs if they watched it enough to be worth £150 a year. They both said no. So it's gone.
Savings will pay for the water company price hike.....,

Haha this is what I we do!

Your partner sounds just like me.😁

Love Netflix. Huge back catalogue. Got us through 18 month lockdown (CEV husband, our then 17 year old and I particularly) so I’m very fond of it.

PontiacFirebird · 06/03/2025 16:25

I don’t know how anyone finds the time for it! I use bbc I player, itvx and the channel 4 streaming platform. There’s so much on those 3 I have loads waiting to be watched.

Olika · 06/03/2025 16:38

I am finding Netflix a bit boring at the moment. There are less and less movies I watch and getting bored with some series I used to like. My DH is paying for it so I will keep watching randomly but if I was paying I would probably cancel as I just don't find as much to watch as in the past.

Happystrider1 · 06/03/2025 16:46

Honestly debating cancelling Netflix along with TV licence. Currently have a free trial with Apple and have Prime anyway.

Kids like CBBC though for factual programmes such as Maddie's do you know and animal documentaries so a bit torn at the moment.

PuppyMonkey · 06/03/2025 16:54

I cancelled it once but my DDs go on there so much watching endless repeats of Friends and Brooklyn 91 or whatever it’s called and they were so bereft, I relented.Grin

Watched Zero Day and Apple Cider Vinegar recently and the new thing Adolescence with Stephen Graham starts today I think, so that’s well worth the rob dog prices.Confused

Apple TV far superior IMHO.

FrivolousKitchenRollUse · 06/03/2025 17:10

I was thinking the same the other day - still hold a grudge about the Mindhunter cancellation! They used to have loads of original stuff but now its a lot of things that have been on BBC/ITV before. I find Prime is better, even the selection of older films. I don't have Apple as I would then be paying for practically every service going, inc Sky but I do read good reviews about a lot of things on there.

Be interesting what happens to Netflix membership once Stranger Things finishes.

Yellowhammer09 · 06/03/2025 17:12

We no longer have it. I don't miss it at all.

Lovelysummerdays · 06/03/2025 17:14

I think you should cancel things periodically. I only ever get Apple TV free with a phone. Last time I had it was two years ago so they had lots of new seasons of stuff I watched last time around. Now tv for a month. Netflix. Disney. Prime because they deliver lots of stuff!

Lovelysummerdays · 06/03/2025 17:15

Itsabummer · 06/03/2025 14:49

Slow Horses, best thing on tv for ages. I binged watched during a free trial, then cancelled.

Loved slow horses too. First time I’ve seen it and binged all four series. So funny.

Jo1667 · 06/03/2025 17:19

I'm thinking of cancelling as I'm not watching anything on it at the moment and am waiting for the latest seasons of Bridgerton, Lincoln Lawyer and Nobody Wants This.
I've got a free trial of Apple TV and am watching the sci-fi on there - currently For all Mankind. Will probably pay for Apple TV from the end of the free trial and drop Netflix.

tyish · 06/03/2025 17:20

In the last week I've watched Toxic Town, Apple Cider Vinegar, the Meghan thing and Schitt's Creek (not in their entirety I hasten to add!) DS has watched Friends on it too. It's probably our most watched platform.

1975wasthebest · 06/03/2025 19:19

I get it for the odd month when there’s a new series I want to watch and I can watch a few films as well. Definitely not worth paying £12.99 a month for months on end (I hate ads). There doesn’t look like there’s anything appealing coming on until the second half of the year when Monsters and Nobody Wants This return.

Now has the best TV shows, then Apple TV+.

CalicoPusscat · 06/03/2025 19:23

I get it free with my mobile phone company, if I ever have to start paying for it I'd cancel.

It can be a bit hit or miss!

sunshineandshowers40 · 06/03/2025 19:24

It's too expensive and its content isn't great but there are still quite a few things that we all watch so it is staying!

The other streaming services are cheaper (although not Sky!) and their content isn't much better, I spend more time scrolling than I do watching anything. Wish you could search them all at the same time.

Porcelainpig · 06/03/2025 19:34

We're thinking about cancelling. Running out of things to watch. All the new stuff are terrible Harlan Coben adaptions. I have seen some good stuff over the last year on it though, but we had loads of old shows to catch up on.

Trialling Apple TV now as we love slow horses.

Uppitymuppity · 06/03/2025 19:40

I don't think it's ever been worth it, since the days of free trials I've never thought to pay for it.
