Hoping for traffic and collective wisdom of Mumsnet.
Posting on behalf of a close friend. Not going to write a book but this person finally deserves something good.

Mid to late 20s.
Would like to find something with opportunity to progress and finally stop scraping the barrel.

Currently working a car sales role (Very very recently) which has turned out to be not really as advertised, turns out they have been placed in the quietest location for this dealership and are basically staring at a door no one walks through for 10hrs a day going out of their mind. No customers means 0 commissions and in turn their paycheck is very underwhelming and making them struggle. They are still within their probation where they can walk away with no notice at any point.
Previous role, 5 years experience:

  • year 1-2: on the road - by appointment only sales (think windows/shutters etc.)
  • year 2 - 5: promoted to sales supervisor responsible for taking appointments and for efficiently organizing sales staff routes, also stepping into the sales role and fitting role as and when necessary, handling service issues and complaints, training new sales staff, stock take and stock orders, placing and chasing orders and following through from sales to completion.

This person does well in a fast paced environment or when tasks switch frequently. They are competent, good at customer relations and very practical. They are capable and freakishly good at picking up new things.
They do not have any noteworthy qualifications or degrees.

Any suggestions or tips would be hugely appreciated. If it helps - location is S.Yorkshire.

On a careers fair I was at recently someone said if you're good at sales you can be good at procurement (so buying instead of selling). Much more stable roles and opportunities to progress, transferrable skills, and particularly if you can find a starter role buying from the industry you've recently sold from.

Generally lower salaries than the amount you can get with incredible commissions in sales, but a stable, predictable income you can build as you progress.

Try Temporary Recruitment, fast paced busy environment with opportunities to use their existing sales and customer service skills.
The basic salaries aren’t great but it can be lucrative with commission

TealOP · 04/03/2025 21:41

I’d say recruitment agency as well. Need good people skills so same as sales and a temp desk, especially in health or education will be very busy.

  • Medical sales rep if interested in the sector
  • Pricedurement as mentioned already
  • Office Manager/Executive
  • Call centre manager to build up management skills rather than long term
  • Banking- on the car finance/leasing sales rep side of things

Are they prepared to do exams/further education while working?

Purpl · 05/03/2025 07:23

second call centre type role. Try insurance industry as get better pension private health etc and most jobs are now remote so location doesn’t have to be London

Purpl · 05/03/2025 07:25

Posted too quick I’m thinking car and household roles they are the bottom trining grounds for better careers in this industry

Purpl · 05/03/2025 07:26

Again Leeds and Manchester areas are big insurance hubs and they pay for industry qualifications

Mumdiva99 · 05/03/2025 07:27

Instead of staring at the door have they tried calling up all the previous customers to see if they are looking to upgrade? Have they launched an online campaign showcasing the best second hand cars they currently have in. Have they contacted large local companies to see if they can run an event at their work place.....etc etc....good sales is more than just converting a customer that walks through the door.....

New build house sales? NOT estate agency

coolcahuna · 05/03/2025 07:29

Junior Buyer roles or Sales exec roles could be good as lead on to National account management which is well paid

I know someone in medical sales, he was a medic in the army before getting the role when he left. I medical sales they would like the applicant to have specialist knowledge.
