Friends are taking in lodgers to help pay mortgage. It's a tough time

ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 14:05

@Hankunamatata thank I just worry if a lodger would be safe

already gone through money saving expert site too it just takes all fun out of life

This is no offence to you op...but £27k a year is not a good salary.. it's only a little more than minimum wage. It's not your fault, wages in this country are far too low.

ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 14:22

yes wages are low @Comedycook

how can I stop worying so much

trying to look for another job for more than i am on but no luck

OP posts:
ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 14:23

if 27k not a good salary is it even ok or is it bad

OP posts:
feelinggrim18 · 04/03/2025 14:27

I'm on £31k and I think that's terrible,

I only get by because there's 2 of us,

Single people really get shafted I feel. Only 25% off council tax - why not 50% etc

Comedycook · 04/03/2025 14:28

Can you get an evening or weekend job?

ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 14:29

Been trying to get an evening/weekend job but no luck been searching indeed is there anything you think I should do @Comedycook

@feelinggrim18 yes I get no help with nothing other than 25% off council tax but see people on child benefit with more money than me taking my taxes as they post on here

I'm sure you mean well but OP is upset and worries about the joy being sucked out of life so I don't think a second job is going to help her mindset. How long should she have this evening/weekend job? The rest of her life? When does she, you know, live?

Fagli · 04/03/2025 14:31

well done on being able to get a mortgage as a single person on that salary. I think you’ve done really well. I would definitely consider getting a flatmate. Someone you have something in common with. I lived with a friend for a while and we had lots of fun. Although it was her house, she didn’t make me feel like a lodger, I had access to all the communal areas and she treated me as an equal. Living there was a great memory.

not to mention paying 100% of utility bills, wifi, house insurance etc! It's expensive to live on your own compared to living with a partner.
and i hate to say it but £27k is not that great a salary these days.

ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 14:34

@namechangeGOT thanks i am looking but would like to live too thank u
@Fagli thank its a small mortgage over 40 year as couldnt afford it over less than 40y rents are more round this area

Whether people on here claim child benefit or not, really won't make a difference to how much money you have op.

Depends if she just wants a moan, which is absolutely understandable or actual solutions. She is looking for a better paid job she said but having no luck...if she's not entitled to any benefits, then the only way she'll have more money is to earn it. I'm sympathetic and it sucks

ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 14:44

@Comedycook I disagree I pay tax to fund child benefit for people who are richer than me if I didnt pay that tax id have more money

Try walking into pubs/restaurants if you have any evenings/weekends free. My DH is in hospitality and he really struggles to recruit staff into the roles due to the unsociable hours. It’s not the best paid work but tips often boost the wages significantly.

I appreciate it’s a tough world out there at the minute.

Your tax goes into the pot like everyone else's...it helps fund schools, the NHS, the military, welfare...all sorts of things.

ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 14:50

@Comedycook yes and the nhs, the military, welfare I am fine to fund. Other peoples children when they have more money than me I am not...

Well when you get your next payslip and see the tax which has been taken, imagine that money has gone into the NHS rather than child benefit...

ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 14:53

@Comedycook I dont need to imagine, its listed in black and white on the HMRC app what my taxes go to

Just want the bit about contributing to child benefit as part of welfare removed rest I am mostly fine with

Just wait til you find out how much of your tax goes on lots of other people who are wealthier than you.

Coming on a parenting forum complaining about the pittance that is child benefit is probably not your finest hour when there are so many other things your tax is paying for that you could target.

ForTwinklyMintSeal · 04/03/2025 15:01

@BoredZelda

Yes there is loads thats the point its disqusting and child benefit is just one of them
