I don't see why people should have to pay to pee!
You don't if you go in a hedge or bush.

However if you want a clean toilet, with toilet paper, running water, soap and drying facilties as well as someone to clean them and the building to be maintained the 50p is a bargain!

We have all those things in our public loos (not the UK) for free. And there are plenty of them in our town.

Sometimes. More worrying there are hardly any public restrooms at all in the UK now.

Local authorities are cash strapped. I'd rather pay and help keep them open than lose them.
I dont know your country but many European places I've been charge, even in shopping malls ( they don't usually charge here) I remember being shocked about 10 years ago paying near £2 to go to a public loo in Oslo. I was even more shocked that they accepted Visa, that was the first time I'd come across that.

London railway stations are all now free. Several tube stations have free toilets. They are free in food courts, macdonalds, costa etc although some you need to be a customer and get a door code on your receipt

I'm in NZ, I've never been charged to use a loo anywhere here.

Do you mean toilets? Then no. We don't have many places where you can bathe in public.

Why? What is it that makes people require loos less in winter?

WonderingWanda · 06/03/2025 06:22

My village has free public toilets and the small seaside town 10 mins away also has free public toilets. The larger seaside town 20 mins away has toilets you have to pay for. There are always free toilets in larger supermarkets and many coffee shops. There are disabled toilets which you can apply for a special universal key to use.

In general, the areas where toilets are pay to use are often where there has been lots of antisocial behaviour in the toilets so often in city centres where homeless or drug users might make a mess in the toilets or in seaside towns where the local youths might decide to vandalise or graffiti them.

i know, it is appalling

janj52301 · 06/03/2025 08:15

Sometime loos are closed in winter as the pipes freeze and burst so they turn off the water as a precaution

CarlaH · 06/03/2025 09:19

There are so many parks and green areas around here that have toilet blocks. Some of them are really small and you wouldn't expect them to have loos. Sadly though they are all, and I mean all, closed now.

Very frustrating to need a wee and to know that the facilities are there but can't be accessed.

pollymere · 06/03/2025 14:26

Even the ones that require payment are free if you have a radar key for disability.
