To have laughed out loud at this retail worker

Today I went to a highstreet branch for some painkillers. I asked the lady behind the counter if they had some cocodomol. She said 'yes, we have our normal cocodomol and our max strength'. I asked if I was allowed to come and read the box and she said no (behind the counter so fair enough) I then asked if she could please explain the difference between the 2, I obviously meant the difference in strength in the active ingredient. Her honest to God, genuine response was 'yes of course, this one is our max strength version...... and this one ....is not'😂I was so taken aback by the utter ridiculousness of her explanation that I had no idea to respond, I just laughed. Anyone had anything similar or did I just encounter a particularly unknowlegable retail worker ?

Why laugh at her response when you could just have proceeded to ask her for the exact information you required (the difference in active ingredient)? I guess because that wouldn't be any fun and you’d rather humiliate her. AND start a thread on MN asking for other peoples ‘unknowlegable retail worker’ stories.

Perhaps you don’t understand that you don’t know anything about this person. It could have been her first day on the job. Find some common sense and empathy. Here’s what you do next time: ask for the exact information you require or ask to speak to the pharmacist.

When asking someone selling otc medication I'd of assumed that my question was a fairly obvious one. Clearly everyone needs everyone to spell everything out to them. I'll remember that in future. Asking 'what's the difference' between the 2 meds required a fairly standard response.

@Shmee1988 my daughter had this satnav in her van and driving through france to belguim sat nav lady said to stay on this road and drive for a long time. got to the the next interchange and it said to stay on this road and drive for a very very long time! just about wet myself laughing and so did she while driving!

Pollyanna87 · 03/03/2025 18:32

Many customers think that staff are mind readers who will understand half a question. They don’t, you need to explain yourself.

I dont remember writing that i laughed in her face. Did I type that without realising? Laugh/giggle/chuckle same thing. It wasn't a berating laugh, it was just funny. She laughed too. God people are so sensitive 🤔

As I said in my post. In your TITLE it says laughed out loud. Nowhere did I write you said you lauged in her face. Please re read my comment and get the facts straight.

Wonder if the OP did hers at Oxford?

There are no Oxford commas in her post, if that helps ;)

And if you've got an English degree then I've got a degree in Pharmacy 😄

Well then can you please tell me the difference between cocodomal and cocodamol max strength?

My parents went to Miller and Carter once and my dad asked the waitress what bernaise sauce is. She shrugged and said ‘fucked if I know’ 😂😂😂

I think if someone had told me this is the max strength and this is the normal I wouldn't have asked what the difference was between them as she's literally just told you that. I'd have asked what's the difference in strength or whatever it is you actually wanted to know.

You’d probably have to ask the pharmacist in charge bc she wouldn’t know what the ingredients even meant unless she went to school for it.

kittensinthekitchen · 03/03/2025 18:34

WimbyAce · 03/03/2025 18:12

Going against the grain but I think OP's question was obvious. She was asking about the difference between the max strength and normal. Not sure why that is so difficult to answer?!

Because not everything that's obvious to YOU is obvious to everyone else.

You can't - possibly - fathom a reason why someone might answer a question literally? Really?

RiderOfTheBlue · 03/03/2025 18:34

Addictedtowotsits · 03/03/2025 18:23

Yeah but her reply was thick as shit. It's like replying "This is a blue box and this is a red box." Obviously the OP wanted to know the strengths

Agree.

It reminds me of the time I asked a youngster on the deli counter at Tesco whether the sliced beef was topside or silverside and he replied "no, it's peppered". Bless his little cotton socks.

CatsWhiskerz · 03/03/2025 18:35

@Shmee1988
you left a vital bit of information out there about the cost. But it really depends on the pain you're experiencing

The spelling, for one 😁

I’d also expect someone with an English A level, never mind degree, to know that an ellipsis is made up of three dots (full stops) not a random number that changes each time it’s typed ;)

We actually teach ellipses to Year 6 children...

And if we're being REALLY pedantic, I'd also expect English graduates to be aware that 'a lot' is two words, not one, and that a full stop is required at the end of each sentence.

MotherJessAndKittens · 03/03/2025 18:38

I would expect her to say this is xxxmgs and the stronger one is xxxxmgs.

Dramatic · 03/03/2025 18:40

The amount of people who think op's question wasn't obvious is quite concerning. Do this many people really lack basic common sense?!

Addictedtowotsits · 03/03/2025 18:30

My degree is in English Language and Literature too.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 03/03/2025 18:41

Surely after being told that you (quite rightly) couldn’t go behind the counter, the most normal question would have been to ask to compare the boxes? Is that just me?

Yes,it was a laugh, but not in an unkind way. It was just funny and it made me laugh. Obviously my title suggests I was mean, but I honestly did mean it in alight hearted, it was a funny response that made me laugh.

But in this context where the op had already asked to see the two boxes it's extremely obvious that the difference she is asking about isn't the name "max strength" 🤦

Ah this reminds me when I tried working in Game as a temp back at uni. During the interview they informed me that I didn't need to know anything about games - I assure you I did and lasted an hour. 😅I politely quit and they kindly paid me for that hour for 'trying' and I found more suitable employment.

They were locked away so I'd kind of assumed that if she didn't know (which i didn't expect her to) that she'd of had a look and either read the ingredients or passed me a box. I wanted to make sure if the strength was higher or if I was just paying for caffeine, which I can't really have unless I want to exchange my back pain for a migraine.

OP posts:
IButtleSir · 03/03/2025 18:44

Obviously my title suggests I was mean

Then why are you berating people who are pointing this out to you?

Shmee1988 · 03/03/2025 18:46

Because I didn't realise that saying that something someone said made you laugh automatically meant that you were unkind, rude and a bitch. Usually if someone says they laughed, this means they found it funny, no?

You repeat the mistake yet again. "When asking someone selling otc medication I'd of assumed" It is I'd HAVE. Your English is absolutely woeful.
