To have laughed out loud at this retail worker

Today I went to a highstreet branch for some painkillers. I asked the lady behind the counter if they had some cocodomol. She said 'yes, we have our normal cocodomol and our max strength'. I asked if I was allowed to come and read the box and she said no (behind the counter so fair enough) I then asked if she could please explain the difference between the 2, I obviously meant the difference in strength in the active ingredient. Her honest to God, genuine response was 'yes of course, this one is our max strength version...... and this one ....is not'😂I was so taken aback by the utter ridiculousness of her explanation that I had no idea to respond, I just laughed. Anyone had anything similar or did I just encounter a particularly unknowlegable retail worker ?

I worked in a pharmacy 10 years ago and I had no training in pharmaceuticals. I had more training when I worked at Morrisons!! At least she’s out there working and trying to earn a living, laughing in her face was very ‘mean girl’ like.

Training or no. I take it you can read.

Wow, you accuse OP of using "offensive" language and then call her that? Give your head a wobble.

Well firstly, I didn't mock, I laughed. Secondly, I probably would of preferred that to the pathetic answer that I actually got. Funnily enough, I am yet to find anyone IRL who doesn't agree her answer was stupid and warranted a laugh.

"Would of". Do you mean "would have"?

Actually in high doses, aspirin should not be used in pregnancy. It can be dangerous to the foetus circulation. Just like ibuprofen. Which is also available to buy on the shelf in most shops.

Low dose Aspirin is prescription only in pregnancy as it's not suitable for some people, but is prescribed to those who need it. Which is why the staff were completely right not to sell it to you.

If you want to buy it off the shelf in Tesco go ahead, but don't expect someone to break the rules just because you said so. Pharmacies have strict rules and regulations that they must follow. A lot of it is set in law, and if they're found to be breaking it, then the pharmacist faces criminal charges. What if they sold it to a pregnant woman, who had low blood pressure, asthma, and the woman suffered fainting/collapse and hurt their baby. The rules are there for a reason.

75mg is sold in every pharmacy I've been to, and different consultants both pregnancies said to buy it rather than doing a prescription so presumably that's policy to reduce NHS costs. Understandably as it would be ridiculous to be adding that huge bill for something women can buy for £1 just because the occasion pharmacist might want to go on a power trip over one of the most commonly used medications in pregnancy.

@phoenixrosehere
"It isn’t her job to know the difference between the medicines." Er, yes it is. I've never worked in retail, let alone medicines retail, and I would have known what OP was asking me to explain and how to explain the difference.

"It is her job to assist you which she did." Er, no she didn't - at all. OP was no better informed about the difference between the products than before she asked the question. The best reading of the RA's response is that she was being sarcastic.

OP said she was the retail assistant, not a pharmacist. OP wasn’t clear/specific in her question hence the answer she received. Yes, the RA could have asked OP to clarify what she meant.

If the RA was being sarcastic OP would have said so, but they hadn’t. OP also said that they laughed about it after.

Retail Assistants selling OTC medicines are trained to do the job and they don't have to be a pharmacist to answer simple questions like OP's (I could have answered her question competently with no training whatsoever). This RA clearly wasn't competent to do her job and needs retraining if she thought her response was in any way sensible, reasonable or helpful.
And I didn't say OP said the RA was being sarcastic - that's my best reading of the RA's reply because the only other conclusion I could draw from it is that she's as thick as mince.

Yes it’s always hilarious when you get “one in” on underpaid hard working people who are simply trying to make ends meet in a business where 70% of people are rude and entitled. Well done OP. 👏

BRAVO!

Shmee1988 · 05/03/2025 10:57

Okie dokie. I think you're acting incredibly odd by having 'read all of the posts' and yet still failing to understand why I asked lol.
My question was obvious, to anyone with a half a brain and shoukd certainly have been obvious to someone selling potentially dangerous medication. Even if she'd misunderstood and thought I meant difference in price or amount of tablets, the answer she actually gave was pointless and rude and ..... heaven help me for daring to say it.... STUPID 😂

Shoukd. ? Really? I am that "retail worker". Also I double up as a worker in hospitality. I also have a degree in Law and a Masters. I recently gave up full time career in law to care for my mum and dad. (96 each).

I think I may be missing your point? I'm sure you're very smart, which leads me to believe that should you have been the person serving me, you'd have a basic understanding of my question?
And you're really going to pick me up on what is clearly a typo? Lol

Bitter much? You've been caught out as a bully. (Sorry, I'm on my retail lunch break).

Agree. A bully attempting to justify their behaviour.

Talking to people IRL and posting a thread about it calling someone else stupid amongst other things, yet insisting that they're not mocking anyone, because they don't like it that decent people don't behave like that.

And it was a total non event, not even worth thinking about afterwards, unless you need the ego boost that comes with running someone else down.

Bitter about what? Lol 😂 if you're seriously telling me that you'd not have understood my question? If that's the case I genuinely hope I don't end up with you for a legal matter

I love how you are being told over and over again that you were wrong and are still doubling down 🤣🤣

You asked a stupid question. Obviously the extra strength is stronger! If you wanted to know the mg difference in them, maybe you should have been more clearer and asked that!!

Getupandgogo · 06/03/2025 16:18

The cringe at using Lol.

Sad times.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/03/2025 16:20

One was higher strength than the other. What was so funny?
Perhaps you ought to clearly have asked how many mg each were?

OneTC · 06/03/2025 16:21

I didn't know there were 2 strength OTC cocodamol.

Thought it was just the 500/8 and everything else was prescription.

Nutmuncher · 06/03/2025 16:22

Respectfully OP, if I were her, I too would have thought you were a sandwich short of a picnic and said exactly the same.

spuddy4 · 06/03/2025 16:31

And this is why no one wants to work retail. No one wants to be constantly looked down on or mocked on MN.

Consultants have no idea about pharmacy rules and regulations so they'll tell you anything. Vets tell people to come and buy medicine for their pets when that would also be illegal. They just don't know. You can buy aspirin off the shelf in supermarkets and pharmacies, but if you're asking to buy it from behind the counter in a pharmacy where it's controlled, then they were within their rights to refuse sale. Just go to Tesco instead!

daleylama · 11/03/2025 23:54

Needmorelego · 03/03/2025 17:16

Most of the staff in pharmacies aren't trained pharmacists.
There's usually only one on duty at a time.

Oh come on -pharmacies sell various painkillers that are kept out of reach for a good reason. Staff training ought to cover those reasons or they shouldn't be in a position to dispense.
