What's the answer?

Similar stats in Sweden, Denmark etc. It does need to he addressed clearly. Just calling someone a bigot for raising concerns about immigrant crime sweeps the issue under the carpet and prevents debate.

Risk assessment? Na, never been heard of in Germany. 🙄
I am really not sure the UK should be lecturing anyone on this ( maybe the US)

Actually a think the UK does a fairly good job of risk assessing and taking action to prevent atrocities.

school shooting (1) - ban most private ownership of guns & make schools secure compounds… I’m not sure we want to look at America to see what they’ve done with their school shooting problem

Weaponised vehicles - anti vehicle barriers in most towns & at large events

nightclub & event bombings - metal detectors, searches & ID checks

You’ll never stop at the nutters but at least we seem to be trying.

I agree with this. For various reasons, they should be on major alert right now. I hope carnival week passes without any further attacks.

Sorry, that chart above appears to be illegible. Here's the X link;

I agree. I think Germany can learn from the UK on security measures and the UK learns from Germany on homicide.

I wouldn't lecture though.

I was reading some interesting analysis - apparently the security services (particularly in the US) will inevitably pick up chatter if anything big is being planned, and pass the information on to the relevant country's authorities. But the lone wolf vehicle/knife stuff is impossible to pick up on, they're unlikely to be telling anyone so there's zero warning.

Better mental health services would probably have a role to play - it's obvious to me that is one of the factors at play here - but the sheer number of traumatised, disaffected men, struggling to integrate, is huge. How to you tell which ones present a danger to society?

And then there's the total wildcard stuff like the Saudi surgeon who was responsible for the Magdaburg attack - ostensibly an educated, integrated professional. Allegedlyl, the Saudis actually passed on intelligence about his extremist views, but they were ignored as the authorities thought it was an attempt to discredit him.

Vehicle barriers are I suppose necessary, but how depressing that they're needed. However even if you block off every major pedestrian area in every city and town, a determined lone nutter could just mow down children at a pedestrian crossing on the way to school or something.

In Frankfurt there are big bollards that look like HUGE lego bricks at the entrances to any areas where festivals or the Christmas markets are held.
However, I do wish reports of these incidents would stop referring to Western Germany and Eastern Germany. Those times are long gone.

I don't think they were referring to the former East and West Germany - it is just the general geography of Germany as it is today.

according to the Guardian a German citizen has been identified as the perpetrator, so on this occasion, bit too hasty.

And the Southport killer was Welsh

Living in London …. There are many local markets with no bollards or safety precautions.

The most popular being:
Portobello road filled with people shuffling along most days & no bollards.

Covent Garden
Brick Lane area
loads of busy market areas where cars have access to people shuffling along roads

So strongly disagree with view that Germany is not as good as UK …

YearsofYears · 04/03/2025 12:16

I just searched Covent Garden on Google maps and can see bollards at all entrance points to the pedestrianised area. Fairly standard.

Brick lane has bollards and the road narrows/becomes one way so a vehicle would very quickly come to a stop.

Pictures have now been released of the suspect:

I understand he is a German national who is mentally ill. I never suggested he wasn't. I think that Germany does have a problem though. Maybe they also don't spend enough on mental health issues?
