Germany's problem, from my experience of a Christmas market holiday, is that they have near zero concept of security.

Wander in and out, loads of places you could drive a car up, no bag checks, lots of people crammed in together with no management of numbers or avoiding a crush.

People drive cars into crowds in Germany because Germany doesn't yet appear to have got it's act together on safety, or because Germans are prioritising free unmonitored association higher.

Thank you for explaining that the victims deserved it for lack of bollards.

Porcuporpoise · 03/03/2025 19:14

There were bollards in Magdeburg - the attacker drove in through the 1 entrance that had been left open for the emergency services.

Yep.
The attacker done a reccy and identified the one way they could cause mass damage with their vehicle.

Germany has an issue with its apparent lack of security, choosing to trust people rather than face reality that many people, including the new Germans are evil.

Sinkintotheswamp · 03/03/2025 19:22

Well, it'll be man. Again. As usual.

I.e "I'm a bigot but I stand by it" is what that post is saying.

I don’t think that’s bigotry. Not with the pattern we have seen in Germany/ Europe with this kind of attack.

It’s like hearing about a family annihilation murder and linking it to male violence. Sure, if it turns out it was the wife you have been guilty of jumping to conclusions and will look a bit silly, but I’m not sure you’ve been guilty of bigotry, given the numbers for that crime.

YearsofYears · 03/03/2025 19:31

The Times says it's the second attack in a similar part of Mannheim in nine months.

YearsofYears · 03/03/2025 19:35

Also reported in The Times :
'The local police force, already on tenterhooks after various warnings last week that a terror attack on a carnival parade might be imminent.'
It also states that the owner of the vehicle threatened to light himself on fire in August (unclear if that is the perpetrator yet).
Total deja vu. It's similar with the last string of attacks, always seems like the authorities could do more in my view.

No idea how you got the idea I thought the victims deserve it.

Fact remains that security in Germany often feels minimal compared to an equivalent UK event.

In Frankfurt there are big bollards that look like HUGE lego bricks at the entrances to any areas where festivals or the Christmas markets are held.
However, I do wish reports of these incidents would stop referring to Western Germany and Eastern Germany. Those times are long gone.

But they haven't

valder · 03/03/2025 19:43

The common denominator is that all attackers from whatever background are male.

Sick of male violence, but it's nothing new is it?

It's almost like some form of denial. Obviously I wish there weren't evil people out there but it's clearly a massive risk. Do they not risk assess events?

schnubbins · 03/03/2025 19:53

The car was driven down on the tram tracks . There can be no absolute security .Or should all trams now be removed ?

ERthree · 03/03/2025 19:54

This time the killer is German but lets not pretend that having so many male immigrants from a completely different culture in your country doesn't cause problems because it really does.

kattaduck · 03/03/2025 20:02

Seems he was last sentenced to a fine concerning hate speech.
Might be interesting...

Risk assessment? Na, never been heard of in Germany. 🙄
I am really not sure the UK should be lecturing anyone on this ( maybe the US)

The UK has learnt from past atrocities. The police, security services, venue owners, general public all know what to do in the event of an attack.
Germany hasn't learnt yet. The Saudi man who done a stabbing attack back in December was reported to the police and the German equivalent of counter terrorism officials many times, and because of bureaucracy associated with state policing and buck passing he was never recognised as a threat.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 03/03/2025 18:48

Just because someone has German citizenship does not mean they are also not an immigrant.

The police have said he isn't an immigrant. Is that good enough for tlyou to believe that he isn't an immigrant?

MidnightPatrol · 03/03/2025 20:36

Germany allowed very large numbers of refugees into the country, and the recent attacks have been men who had their applications rejected.

I suppose it’s a way of punishing the country for that situation.

Edit: I see above the police have said this is not an immigrant on this occasion. Then we fall into the second phase - the copycat attacks, as people have realised this is a way of killing people without accessing weapons.

I actually agree with you. We should put more pressure on the government to stop this attacks.
I reckon we should follow the UK way yes. Violent protests should be a good way to go.

I never said he was.
I was correctly someone's assertion that because a person has citizenship of a country means they didn't migrate to said country.

Thereby implying that it was an immigrant. You can dissemble all you want but either you were determined it was or you deliberately implied it..

I wouldn't be surprised. It's a way of driving the narrative and sewing discord.

This type of thing occurs in other countries though. This happened a couple of days ago in Israel.

Don't be so stupid.
I'm the grandchild of British Citizens who are immigrants, including one from....Germany.

Now.

You seem to believe that immigrants can't be nationals of their adopted country, and nationals of said country were born there.

A. That's factually incorrect.
B. Xenophobic.
