Scared and worried

I try not to watch the news as I’m very concerned about the state of the world.
However after watching yesterday’s horrific meeting between Trump and Zelensky that someone posted to me I’m frightened for the future. Am I being unnecessarily worried that world war 3 is on the cards given that we have madmen Trump, Putin and Starmer at the helm?

I just tell meself I have no control over it and remind myself that anything could happen tomorrow..I could be hit by a bus blah blah blah, so it keeps me in that mind frame of living in today and still planning all the things I want and hope for.

Zippidydoodah · 01/03/2025 10:36

Yup. Just live your life and try not to think about it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 01/03/2025 10:38

Just get on with life, it's not going to happen here.

KimberleyClark · 01/03/2025 10:39

I was with you until you lumped Starmer in with Trump and Putin. Seriously?

BoudiccaRising · 01/03/2025 10:41

Is there one thread on here today that isn’t about Trump and Putin?

Chill, we’re not going to war, turn off the news.

augustusglupe · 01/03/2025 10:44

The horrific meeting, as you put it, was filmed. How do we know what has been said in past years at these meetings?! We just see and hear everything now, that’s all 🤷🏻‍♀️ Don’t worry about it.

Yeah I probably got that a bit completely out of context, apologies. I don’t watch a lot of tv, but Starmer doesn’t appear to have much care for British people and he’s broken a lot of promises. However I have seen today that Starmer is cutting foreign aid to spend more money on defence due to Trump taking office. Clearly Trumps decision has placed us under threat.

Thanks for this, yes you’re right, I guess a lot has been said behind closed doors that we know nothing about.

YABU OP, for the simple reason that worrying changes nothing. Just worry about the things within your control and let the big stuff take care of itself, for good or ill.

Pigcasso · 01/03/2025 10:56

People saying it will not happen here, err I have adult kids, I did not have them to be cannon fodder for some egomaniac🙄

Starmer is the opposite of mad. He has a lawyer background so will think things through and be diplomatic. You may not agree with what he does but he'd never rant the way Putin and Trump fo.

BlondiePortz · 01/03/2025 10:59

Well it will either happen or not how is worrying going to change it?

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/03/2025 11:10

Why worry about something you have no control over.

tallhotpinkflamingo · 01/03/2025 11:16

Wow there are a lot of complacent I'm alright Jack's on this thread, no wonder the world is in so much of a mess with so many apathetic people.

It will make you feel better to do something:

Write to your MP
Sign the petitions going around
Get down to your local Ukraine centre or hub and ask how you can help and what they need
Look up your nearest anti-war marches, plan to attend them
See what volunteering you can do to help, there is also stuff you can do from home if you're happy to get involved with calls or emails
Share what you can to help on social media, including directly contacting people you know are likely to help, and supporting Ukrainians and Ukrainian businesses
If you know anyone hosting refugees, find out if you can help them by going for walks, being an ear, collecting anything, giving lifts etc to give everyone a break
Donate if you can (including to food banks), fundraise if you can't

I do think we will see wider war in Europe. With modern long range weaponry it will affect the UK more than in WW2.

I think it is to Trump's advantage to foment war, he will want turmoil in Europe next time he tries to overthrow democracy in the USA. He is already mooting a third term. It was clear he and Vance were spoiling for a fight to try and discredit Zelensky

However worrying and stressing about it will change nothing.

That's an awful lot of people saying it won't happen, I think they just haven't accepted the seismic shift in the global power balance. Of course it is hard to accept that Putin has won the cold war, but won it he has. He now has the current US president and future dictator of the US in his pocket.

The liberalism and post war cooperation of the WW2 era is over. It won't come back until after a huge amount more bloodshed. It will take UK Trump supporters dying and their children dying before they finally see sense.

Don’t be so ridiculous. Trump is going to do a deal with Putin. Don’t you think the little ‘display’ with Zelensky was a bit convenient? He’s buttering up Putin so he can put an end to all this nonsense.

Please don't put Starmer in with this crew. He may not be perfect but Trump and Vance are just vile.

What's Starmer done?
I'm.no fan.of his but he's hardly up there with Putin and Trump.

NamelessNancy · 01/03/2025 14:34

Trump, Putin and Starmer?! Absolutely ridiculous. This "they're all as bad as each other" mentality is so dangerous and part of the reason that actual madmen like the former two manage to gain so much power.

wherethewaterisdarker · 01/03/2025 14:43

Hahahaha at Starmer getting lumped in with the fascist megalomaniac bros! That genuinely made me smile at a dark time geopolitically.

i think you’re right to be worried honestly - it’s the first time in my lifetime (am 40s) where I’ve felt that the likelihood of our lives in the UK/western Europe being impacted seriously by war in the next 5-10 years is quite high.

BallerinaRadio · 01/03/2025 14:47

Starmer a madman 😂

TheaBrandt1 · 01/03/2025 14:48

Starmer a “mad man” along with Trump and Putin?! Have you been day drinking?

Pigcasso · 01/03/2025 10:56

So what's your plan then?

TheaBrandt1 · 01/03/2025 14:52

We took peace for granted. The post war powers worked hard for peace in Europe. I think 1950-2016 will be seen as a golden era for Europe. These things are cyclical. It’s war now.

LadeedahYadaYada · 01/03/2025 15:10

just because it was one camera doesn't mean it hasn't happened in the past behind closed doors. live your life as it's not something you have control over. read "Let them" by Mel Robbins maybe
