AIBU to not want to go to war

It's expensive and it hurts and it helps nothing, it just puts innocent sons, brothers, fathers, uncles and friends through the meat grinder. The only people who benefit are those who make a fortune from selling weapons and are granted contracts for reconstruction.

Haven't we learnt anything? What happened to "never again".

AIBU to really really really not want to be involved in any war?

@cardibach It's not if Russia attacks, it's if the UK push back.

I'm not saying it's right btw, but I cannot see how we could possibly win a war with Russia, other than Nuclear and that would be the mutual assured destruction that nobody wants to happen.

Nobody is talking about declaring war on Russia. Calm down.

ickky · 01/03/2025 17:50

I am calm, but that is what will happen if a peace treaty is not signed.

No it isn’t.
That’s a retired officer sounding off. It’s not policy or anything like it - though Sunak did moot it once.
If Russia get beyond Ukraine and attack NATO countries it’s an outside possibility - but the forces are much more professional and technical than they used to be. An ignorant conscript wouldn’t be much help.
Though if Russia is at the gate…

Some NATO countries already use conscription, and some are returning to it. Of course conscripts in these countries aren't ignorant, they are trained.

Britain will attack Russia if Trump's crap deal isn’t signed? No, you aren’t calm.

Arrivals4lucky · 01/03/2025 18:17

No-one wants to go to war. It will also be our daughters, sisters and mothers BTW.
But if the alternative is to wait for Putin to invade country after country and stand by doing nothing, the. We would have no alternative

Arrivals4lucky · 01/03/2025 18:19

‘thought things fell apart when Zelensky pointed out that there had been repeated previous attempts at diplomacy, but that Putin had demonstrated that he couldn't be trusted. Faced with the truth, Vance and Trump just started shouting at Zelensky.’

its what Trump does when presented with facts - bully and yell. Black is whiten and white is black and Zelensky is the dictator and Ukraine the aggressor against poor little Russia.

Indeed. I’m seriously beginning to wonder whether Musk has lured Trump onto the ketamine. That video on his SM platform was like a drugged hallucination.

War terrifies me. The thought of having to bundle my kids in the car, leave the pets behind, all their toys, clothes and possessions. Head out into the unknown in search of safety risking bombs, bullets, and God knows what else. The constant risk of murder and rape from both invading soldiers and fellow countrymen. It's a horrific business and it hurts my heart that it is still so prevalent.

Pets in WW2 were lined up to be euthanised as it was thought that there would be no spare food to feed them.
Awful.
I’d definitely take my chance with dog and starve rather than do that if strict rationing came in.

She’d keep rats down if push came to shove and could be employed as a ratter.

Scots died at Culloden. And the subsequent Highland Clearances permanently influenced Scotland's demographics and prosperity. I'd argue the sky did come down for Scotland as it had been... That's the issue with what you call 'hostile mergers'.

How would you characterise Scotlands absorption into England

Demographics in the Highlands were going to change with or without the clearances it improved life for many

As Julia Hartley Brewer asked Russia apologist Tice, if Putin invaded Britain, what part of our country would you be happy to give up?

If push comes to shove you can breed the rats and eat them too.

Si vis pacem, para bellum

If you want peace, prepare for war. The adage is as relevant now as it has been for the last 1,600 years. The only way to deter aggression is to maintain a strong armed forces. Declaring themselves a neutral pacifist didn’t help Belgium, did it?

London. But could Russia afford the congestion and ulez charges for all their tanks?

Aren't antique vehicles exempt?

What on earth are you on about, OP? When did America rule the world?

Have you ever heard the US referred to as the world's policeman?

"The Cold War period was widely understood as one of bipolarity with the USA and the USSR as the world's two superpowers, whereas the end of the Cold War led to unipolarity with the US as the world's sole superpower in the 1990s and 2000s. Scholars have debated how to characterize the current international system.[2][3][4]"https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarity_(international_relations)

When you are cowering behind the biggest boy in the playground, they kinda are in charge. They also own most of the critical digital infrastructure we use in the UK today. Not to mention the soft imperial power. How many people say movie instead of film. The GAE the global American empire.

Llttledrummergirl · 01/03/2025 20:52

I don't think you've understood this phrase properly.

ickky · 01/03/2025 21:00

@cardibach Why do you keep telling me to calm down? It's a bit weird. 😀

I didn't say Britain would attack Russia, I said if the UK push back, Russia will take it as an act of war if we put British troops in Ukraine.

Keep? I did it once. Then said you weren’t calm but with no comment on that.

Goodengine · 01/03/2025 21:27

To stand by and watch as Putin and Trump carve up Ukraine for profit is the same as the world did when Hitler and Starlin carved up Poland!!!

That worked out well!

We can either stand by and watch or stand up and be counted!

Rosesducks · 01/03/2025 21:41

For those who beat the war drums, tell me what exactly is the preferred endgame?

Do you truly believe that throwing wave after wave of soldiers into the inferno will suddenly make Putin bow his head?

Unless you’re ready to turn the key and bathe the world in nuclear fire, this war doesn’t end with a glorious charge it ends in exhaustion, in rubble, in a battlefield where victory tastes as bitter as defeat.

Yes, I understand the desire for Ukraine to triumph. Its certainly a righteous cause, But tell me have you ever seen a kingdom rise from ashes?

Or does history teach us that when the dust settles, it’s the vultures who feast?
You may claim victory in the end, but when the cities are smouldering ruins and the streets are paved with ghosts, what exactly have you won?

So I ask you how many of you, sitting in your comfortable homes, would still cheer for war if the price was watching Europe burn?

Llttledrummergirl · 01/03/2025 22:06

If you knew history, you would know that appeasement only makes things worse in the long run.
This illegal invasion of Ukraine could stop tomorrow if Putin and Trump had any decency.

Nat6999 · 01/03/2025 22:14

I've never been so glad that ds is disabled, the same for my son in law, nephew & niece, none of them can be sent off to fight any wars. The world is a dangerous place at the moment with Trump, Putin & Xi Jinping in it, I really hope something to take at least 2 of them out of the equation soon.
