I got beef and mushrooms and egg fried rice on Wednesday. It'll be OK if I heat it thoroughly tonight won't it?

Can you update us in the morning if u have survived the night

SnowyintheATL · 01/03/2025 01:12

I eat off my Chinese food for 2-3 days and have never had an issue. It’s Simao to meal prepping- cook the food put it in the fridge and reheat to eat it. Same thing.

MissyPants · 01/03/2025 01:12

I always re heat rice, still alive to tell the tale. I eat left over Chinese t/a after a few days too.
I also eat meat that has past expiry by a few days if it smells ok.

staceyflack · 01/03/2025 01:13

💯! It's been in the fridge i assume? Just nuke it to within an inch of its life 😁

Velmy · 01/03/2025 01:14

Just get a new one! 😖

Flomingho · 01/03/2025 01:16

No, reheated rice is a big risk for food poisoning. Personally, I wouldn't chance it.

It's really funny with this rice phobia and yet people let their cats sit on worksurfaces (with potentially dirty bottoms) and let dogs lick their faces, both far more a source of dodgy tummy than piping hot rice!

haha so true! Or are generally really lax about washing their hands which ia more likely to be a source of spreading illness.

id usually eat leftovers including rice from chinese/Indian takeaway 2-3 days after. So long as it was refrigerated properly and not left out after it cools.
I know reheating rice doesn’t make it safe (i believe it’s more about it being cooled properly before storing) but I know people from other cultural bg who’ve done this multiple times a week for their whole lives and been absolutely fine!

Moominsmoo · 01/03/2025 02:10

apparently the re heated rice fear is from restaurants where they have a big vat of rice that seems to have cooled but is so big, it’s still warm and wet in the middle of the vat, and left for days. I’m not sure it’s a thing any more- like we all were scared of microwaves leaking radioactivity into the kitchen.
if it’s been in the fridge then you heat it thoroughly it will be fine.

MinnieCoops · 01/03/2025 07:15

We always do

DazzyRascale · 01/03/2025 07:18

SunshineDreamcatcher · 28/02/2025 19:42

You're not supposed to reheat rice

Incorrect.

It's actually the cooling that's the issue. If it's cooled down quickly, refrigerated and then heated thoroughly it is perfectly safe

TorroFerney · 01/03/2025 07:24

Seeline · 28/02/2025 19:40

I wouldn't risk the rice - it will already have been reheated at least once.
If you cooked the beef quickly and put it straight in the fridge, I'd be tempted.

Have you seen the comedian Phil Wang on this rice thing. He's Malaysian and says something about not understanding this terror about rice and that half the population of Malaysia , China etc would have been wiped out if reheating rice was as dangerous as the Brits make out.

ArmyBarbie · 01/03/2025 07:25

I often eat leftover takeaway a couple of days later. If it looks and smells ok then it's edible in my book. I would however heat really thoroughly and then leave it to cool a bit.

MrsClatterbuck · 01/03/2025 07:29

I do this with prawn satay as long as it has been refrigerated after cooling. And heat really well. A couple of weeks ago I left it out overnight and wouldn't risk it so threw it out. Our Chinese is very generous and I do my best but usually only manage half of it.

Plump82 · 01/03/2025 07:31

I immediately thought of Phil Wang as well!
As to eating it, yep I definitely would and have. Manu times! And I'm still here to tell the tale.

SweetBaklava · 01/03/2025 07:33

One day, yes.
Two days, speaking from bitter experience no

crackfoxy · 01/03/2025 07:37

I would, but then this sort of thing never bothers me

AppropriateAdult · 01/03/2025 07:43

We literally do this every single week (and sometimes eat it up to four days afterwards). Never a single case of food poisoning.

There's a lot of misunderstanding about the problems with rice. The risk is not in the reheating; it's in leaving rice out at room temperature for a prolonged period - this can cause the development of a bacteria, Bacillus cereus, which produces a toxin. Once this toxin has been produced, it cannot be killed by heating, and it causes a really awful - and potentially fatal - illness. But as long as you don't allow it to develop in the first place, by putting the leftover rice in the fridge directly after your meal, there's no issue with reheating it later.

gettingolderbutcooler · 01/03/2025 08:28

Def yes- eat it!

Mindymomo · 01/03/2025 08:33

Bit late, but my adult DS eats leftover takeaway food 3/4 days after, we wouldn’t but he seems ok doing this.

Correct!

So many people simply think you "can't reheat rice", which is rubbish. If cooked quickly and refrigerated, it's all good!

lottiegarbanzo · 01/03/2025 08:41

The problem is not with reheating rice. It is with reheated rice.

The danger point is when the rice cools - how long it was left out warm then tepid, before being refrigerated, allowing growth of poisonous spores.

Once the poison has been exuded into the rice, it's there. You can't kill poison.

DiscoBeat · 01/03/2025 08:42

I'd eat it except the rice.

Christmasbear1 · 01/03/2025 08:44

I ate left over Chinese takeaway for about 3 days last week. I know you're not supposed to reheat rice but I'm south Asian and we've always done it. Never had any food poisoning from it

lottiegarbanzo · 01/03/2025 08:48

Outbreaks of food poisoning from rice usually originate from takeaways with poor hygiene. They occur in clusters.

Disturbia81 · 01/03/2025 09:15

I have never had food poisoning and break all sorts of these rules.
It depends on your guts and how hardy they are
