To wish Starmer would make a unilateral decision to rejoin the EU?

That’s all, really. Yes it would be ‘undemocratic’ but should we sacrifice national interest on the altar of a vote from 10 years ago that everyone seems to regret?

We feel adrift during a scary time, and the US has all but ghosted us.

I wish it too. The problem is if he did we become like America and lose all semblance of democracy. I feel we sometimes need an autocracy and this is one time but it does leave us open for hypocrisy allegations

Well, joining the EU certainly lets one in for autocracy, which has always been the rest of the continent's default position.

mugglewump · 01/03/2025 15:40

I don't think it would be a good decision. I am still grieving for our EU freedom and community, but making a decision without some kind of democratic process would not go down well with the public at large. In addition, the rise of the far right across Europe is something I am wary of. However, I do believe in rejoining the free trade area and having freedom of movement. That would be extremely good for our economy and our people.

YABU I don't know anyone who voted leave who regrets the decision. I'd expect full scale riots if he even attempted anything of the like. He and his party are hugely disliked, especially amongst the sterotype population who voted leave. Making that kind of decision would be disaster.

America may have ghosted us because of our current goverment who have been fairly obvious in their opinions of the new American President.

Edited

While most people who supported Brexit haven't changed their minds (yet), polling suggests a significant minority have. YouGov reports one in five leave voters (20%) would now support rejoining the EU itself and about one in three (32%) would support rejoining the single market. https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/51484-how-do-britons-feel-about-brexit-five-years-on

Dotjones · 01/03/2025 16:04

YABU because if "everyone seems to regret" it then there should definitely be another referendum to legitimise rejoining the EU (or at least, applying to rejoin).

Remember though we'll get a much worse deal if they allow us to rejoin and it will cost us a hell of a lot.

SamanthaJayneFrances · 01/03/2025 16:11

We should tread very carefully with closer alignment to the EU, their economic outlook is dire especially power houses Germany and France.

I don't know anyone who wants to rejoin, but understand there may be some people with EU spouses/family who find it difficult or some folk miss hiring cheap staff or want to buy up Spanish properties without red tape (not sure the Spanish will welcome that!), but most Brits have not changed their minds.

Labour have said they have no intention of tying us to the political bloc again. If they do, Reform will step in as our new government and rectify the situation.

JacqFrost · 01/03/2025 16:27

These YouGov opinion polls always intrigue me. I'm 42 and never been asked to answer an opinion poll and I don't know anyone who ever has either.

Eurozone still done better than U.K.

Eurozone still done better than U.K.

That looks suspect. Especially Italy and France’s figures.

Biscuitsnotcookies · 01/03/2025 16:37

The Eurozone is bigger than France and Italy too!!!

ChrisS36 · 01/03/2025 16:57

That would be brilliant (and lose Starmer the next election with no doubt whatsoever)

Biscuitsnotcookies · 01/03/2025 16:59

And guarantee the hardest far right government this country has ever seen. Great,

Unlikely. There’s an awful lot of Brexit regret from yes voters.

No there really isn’t despite what remainers think, and you are overlooking the number of remainers that have since changed their minds after watching the EU pantomime in full flow for the last ten years.

ChrisS36 · 01/03/2025 17:12

Without a referendum what would stop the Conservatives simply pledging to leave again if re-elected?

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 01/03/2025 17:13

Nope we voted to leave and we should stay left.

There is, supported by polling agencies. Many available online. Average believing it was a mistake is around 55 %.

I just think this is totally fake and probably supported by some EU think tank. I know many brexiteers and all express relief to be out.

Biscuitsnotcookies · 01/03/2025 17:20

The rest of Europe are turning against the EU so it would be a bit silly at this point! Many European countries have euro sceptic governments. It’s not exactly a rip roaring success is it! 😂

Equally though on those questions, 'only' 83% of 2016 remain voters support rejoining the EU itself and 74% support rejoining the single market.

Fake?! Oh, ok, I see, now.

I don’t suspect that YouGov is an EU think tank. Neither are the other independent, UK polling agencies who regularly poll very similar results.
. Your use of the word “fake” tells me all I need to know about you, though.

Your anecdote is meaningless, as is my knowing Brexiteers who now regret their vote and not a single person who voted to remain who has changed their mind.

You do you, though, in your happy little world.

The rest of Europe are turning against the EU so it would be a bit silly at this point! Many European countries have euro sceptic governments. It’s not exactly a rip roaring success is it! 😂

I think the problem is more that it has a few pro Russian governments. I don't think the EU understands how to handle that. The obvious way involves breaking a lot of its long held principles. But if the EU wants to survive, it cannot have pro Russian governments. The security of EU countries depends on that.

You can also see that a strong Europe with a common currency is a problem for the US and its reserve currency.

The EU has enormous potential power. But it must break out of the idea that Russia is friendly and you can do business with Russia without cost. In fact the cost is going to be huge.
