Another Noisy Neighbour Thread

Next door neighbours are having a BBQ. Drinks have been flowing since 4ish, music blaring out since 6pm.

Music still in full swing and although my windows are closed, all I can hear is thud, thud, thud and every so often a drunken rendition of Three Lions. I cant even imagine how many kids they have in the garden screaming.

I dont want to seem a miserable cow at 23, but DH at work, 8 month old DS has woken several times, and the only option I feel I have is going to bed as to turn the TV volume up to drown out the sound would no doubt wake DS up again.

These neighbours, and those on the other side of us are quite pally, and I text the others on Thursday night at 7.30pm asking if they could please stop the drilling as DS was waking up screaming with fright at the noise. No doubt the neighbours have spoken about it, and I dont want to seem a fuddy duddy for asking the other side to keep it down tonight!

Should I keep my mouth shut considering it might be the only bit of heat we get all summer, and therefore their only chance for a BBQ (wishful thinking), or should I stand my ground and ask for them to keep the noise down?

it's only one night and it's still not that late (although I always think 11pm is a key time for people to start turning down the volume)

you might find that if you live in a place with a lot of noise that ds will start getting used to it. We had a full on cocktail party a few weeks ago with v loud music right underneath where the kids sleep and they did not even stir because they've got used to a lot of noise.

everyone is entitled to have a bit of fun with friends loud or quiet on their own property so long as they are considerate and hopefully they will be. The noise and disturbance laws i believe are in place 11pm-7am. ( if i am wrong i am sure to be corrected)
I personally would think by midnight they should have quietened down.

I know its only once in a while, thats why I posted on here first instead of going in all guns blazing!

Hopefully they will have all had too much to drink soon and stumble into their beds

I'd leave it, Some of our neighbours had stupidly loud music & karaoke last year - I didn't hear it but apparently it kept DP awake and he rang the police.
He woke me up to tell me what he'd done - I went spare (it was only 11:30 FGS)
When the police went they used their karaoke mic to say whoever had done it would be found out and made to pay. I didn't sleep very well for weeks after that.

I also hope you'll find that as he gets older, he'll become more noise tolerant (it's harder when they are babies). I think it's when they hit toddlerdom that you notice they can sleep through a lot more (noise) for some reason.

Hope they quieten down soon!

I looked this up because we often have this problem, and it seems that after 11pm you are not supposed to have noise outside, and if you are making a noise indoors you are supposed to shut the windows and doors.

If your neighbours are still making a noise in 1/2 an hour you are perfectly justified in asking them to be quiet.

DH is more tolerant than I am- probably because by the time he gets home from work the parties are ready for finishing anyway

Agree about getting used to noise, when all three of mine were small, they would sleep through absolutely anything. Now we have GS and live in the midle of nowhere - the sligtest noise wakes him.

I am full of sympathy as a burglar alarm has been going off for 20 minutes now and it is driving me mad!

I would leave it until gone 11pm. If it was a regular thing I would suggest speaking to Environmental Health but as a one off you may have to just deal with it. Cr*p I know but otherwise you may just wind them up more.

DS is normally quite good. He never stirs when DH comes home or when Im pottering about upstairs on an evening.

I guess it will be worth it if he can get used to noise as he's older.

They must have logged onto Mumsnet- no kids screaming, just light chatter in the garden and the faint noise of a stereo!

OMG...i have had times when the neighbours were having repeated parties until 4 in the morning and they insisted we go to environmental health (who only work during office hours so you get jack shit done about it).
