How has Facebook changed since 2010?

I started using Facebook in 2010 - I realise that compared to most - I was late to the party.

So - how do you feel it’s changed since this time ?

A lot more adverts!

Updating your status regularly-ish was a thing. Now it’s not … only a small handful of my friends ever post a status. Mostly photos and / or check ins.

I think it’s more about groups now. It is visually different but I can’t quite remember how it used to look!

HundredPercentUnsure · 24/02/2025 23:29

Adverts and clickbait. No faces that I know which was the whole point I think in the first place. To connect with people within your sphere, or one/two steps removed, wasn't it?

It's awful these days.

Omg I totally agree with this !

In 2010 all status updates were prefixed with 'is' I seem to recall. So it would be like:

Molly is ... fed up of the rain
David is ... going on holiday

Etc

Chocoholicnightmare · 24/02/2025 23:34

People used to update their status in the third person. I agree about frequency of usage. I used to post most days, but it's a lot longer between posts now. It's nice to keep in touch with people.

We have a village Facebook group and there is useful stuff in there about roadworks and bin changes and small businesses but there’s so so much drama.

Hooded youths have been seen (often accompanied with ‘if this is your child then …’

Dog shit (accompanied by photos of said dog shit, I mean, I know what dog shit looks like, thanks)

Drama every time there’s fireworks

But I am in a couple of parenting groups on there which are helpful and a couple of mental ones as well.

What I absolutely HATE is if you occasionally comment on a page or something and next thing you know you’ve a badge to say you’re a ‘top fan.’ I’m apparently a top fan of the local newspaper from where I used to live and of centre parcs.

And updating your friend or partner or siblings status was hilarious ‘Amy is so lucky to have such an amazing sister’ Blush

Poking was a big thing at one point too, perhaps earlier than 2010 though.

theribbonroom · 24/02/2025 23:42

It's so depressing now.
I used to feel in touch with people
Now I am
Not

Gosh yes - or ‘Top Contributor’

I think it was the innocence of it. Like people telling you were they were every hour of the day.

no I can definitely remember being poked in 2010

I remember Facebook circa 2007. Status updates, poking, fraping, scrabulous, that farm game that everyone was playing.

Now it's all adverts, clickbait, AI images of grannies baking cakes for some weird reason, and threads with bots talking to other bots.

It's the worst and I don't understand why Zuckerberg is happy to let it turn into a weird apocalyptic AI landscape of bots blathering away to each other. It could have a successful renaissance. But most likely I think it will just die and people will remember it in future like we remember MySpace.

TickingAlongNicely · 24/02/2025 23:47

I remember the days when the only way to communicate with your friends on Facebook was writing on their wall.

Sometimes these conservation pop up in "Memories" and its wierd seeing your lunch plans from 20 years ago immortalised

Howcoulduoudothsr · 24/02/2025 23:48

I think it was a novelty. I used to post loads, feel a bit embarrassed tbh. Barely use it now. I remember being really upset when no one nominated me for that ice bucket challenge thing, god, seems unbelievably ridiculous now!

So true!

cheseandme · 24/02/2025 23:49

I loved FB until about 2years ago but my friends all now do instagram…I personally can’t get on with instagram,I just don’t get it TBH .

WellsAndThistles · 24/02/2025 23:53

Nothing except adverts now.

I have unfollowed the few people that still post updates as they tend to be annoying, the type that post blog style about little Alfie's potty training 'journey' etc.

I tend to only use FB for my crafting hobbies now.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 25/02/2025 00:01

I kind of miss the old Facebook. Now it’s absolutely cringe to think of posting anything on there other than the odd holiday photo but ah it was glorious back in the day!

BertieBotts · 25/02/2025 00:02

It used to show your friends' posts in reverse chronological order. Then groups got really big and I loved being in loads of these really active, fun groups that felt like a community.

Now it shows me 90% suggested content, ads, stolen content, AI junk, clickbait, scams and reels. I can't seem to NOT click on reels even though I hate them and barely ever find them useful or amusing. Notifications are glitchy and don't notify me of things I want to know and do notify me about extremely random shit I don't care about and I can't make it unsubscribe.

Posts from groups open in this weird window on top of a window and will randomly decide to refresh and lose everything I was writing.

I have about 2 friends who ever post anything.

FB is rarely ever a satisfying experience any more. I don't even know why I still go there. I am thinking of deleting the app from my phone.

I find that exactly with the between posting length

It used to be about keeping up with friends, but it's pretty much useless for that now. My feed is almost entirely pushed content that I have ne interest in. I see updates from friends days or weeks after they've published them. I use it for groups, but for almost nothing else.

Berlinlover · 25/02/2025 00:49

I have a very rare form of cancer and find the Facebook groups for this type of cancer very helpful as I’ve never met anyone in real life with the same diagnosis as me.
