To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

Yes it's absolutely absurd.

“Skanks”? Really? How old are you?

StarlightLady · 27/02/2025 06:57

🚩 @whynot2025 Not liking what another woman wears is acceptable. Referring to women as “dressing like skanks” is unacceptable, misogynistic and offensive.

People often resort to name calling and the like when the argument is weak.

This is probably why my teenage son spends so much time at the gym 😂

Apologies if this sounds ignorant but I've never heard the word 'skank' as reffered to in previous posts. I looked it up to no avail. I guess given the thread it means wearing something extremely revealing but out of interest can someone please clarify this.

You obviously didn't look hard enough or are being deliberately naive. A quick Google tells you.

I've since searched again in dictionary.I was getting ready for work (I wfh) & had a quick read of threads during breakfast. Initially I read it was a Brazilian band & a form of dance so asked here. Hope that explains it.

You think at a certain stage of life you've seen it all or at least heard of it. I've just read a thread where the poster was upset about her DH speaking to friends about their sex life. Apparently one of his friends described an act beginning with rusty & he wasnt describing a nail 😂Having looked it up I realise I know nothing. Thank you mumsnet posters for enlightening those of us who think they've heard it all. Every days a school day on mumsnet 😂

Well I'm heartily fed up of seeing women and teenage girls wearing clothes that are barely decent.

It's the height of hypocrisy for women to complain that they are viewed purely in a sexual way when they they wear clothes that are designed to reveal as much of their bodies as possible.

I'm amazed anyone batted an eyelid at Bianca at the Grammys because that's the next logical step when you see how much a lot of women think it's appropriate to reveal on a day to day basis in real life.

And no, I don't want to go back to Victorian times.

Jesus wept. Literally a hair’s breadth from ‘she was asking for it.’

I love Ben too. I tell my teens to follow him. His food munching and tea sipping is fab.

I did do a double take at the this gym this evening when I thought a young woman was naked (I'm old and tired and my contacts aren't great). She was in flesh tone top and bottoms.

AvidAunt · 28/02/2025 03:33

I'm close to 40 and I still wear tight leggings and a sports bra with a top over it to work out - and sometimes just the cropped bra top if it's really hot. I used to figure skate professionally and am an avid runner. Tight workout clothes are better for both of those sports as they don't get caught moving. As an ice dancer, looser exercise clothing actually would have been really dangerous. It's what I'm used to for my sports and comfortable in so it's what I wear.

Has no-one ever watched the Olympics?

Skin-tight Lycra worn by elite sportswomen.

It's not sexual, it's professional activewear.

Exactly. I competed in a sport wearing tight lycra sportswear and it isn't and has never intended to be sexual. It's safer for the sport for the athletes to wear clothing that fits closer to their bodies. It's weirder to me for someone to sexualize that. The person viewing it sexually is the weird one.

What are they supposed to wear, an Aertex blouse and their PE skirt?

But it's not like there are only two options of clothing.

There is a myriad of options in between

jellyfishperiwinkle · 28/02/2025 05:06

I go to a gym with predominantly younger people visiting regularly and have never seen any inappropriate attire. Though I did see a middle aged man in jeans in there yesterday - hopefully he had finished his workout and was just waiting for someone!

But then I don't things leggings and cropped tops are inappropriate, but very comfortable to wear in the gym. I tend to prefer t-shirt or vest and leggings myself, and shorts in summer. A lot of girls wear co-ordinating tops and leggings which look very nice and smart.

I don't see anything wrong with it even if the young people do want to look attractive while in the gym - it's a social thing for them too, being there with mates after school. DD2 has just joined having just turned 16 and she said it was like a primary school reunion as so many of her cohort now go to that gym!

I remember in my 20s fancying someone who went to the university gym and trying to not look quite such a sweaty mess if he was there.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 28/02/2025 05:22

Plus I was wearing lycra then 30 years ago (when it was really hard to get women's gym attire) - used to wear a cropped top and cycle shorts or an all in one leotard with shorts attached. It was certainly a lot more comfortable and less revealing than basIcally a big pair of pants and aertex top we had to wear for cross country running at school in the late 1980s.

People really need to get with the fucking programne if they think close fitting sports wear is new.

If someone is bothered by seeing my now almost 50 year old bottom in a pair of black running tights then they could just not look at it.

If you are looking around and gorping at other people in the gym then you aren't working hard enough.

ShinyClouds · 28/02/2025 07:13

It also encourages young women and girls to exercise as they can wear nice things and look good.

Strong is now what they want to be.

Such as? I can only picture two types of gymwear: close fitting Lycra or tracksuit type clothing.
