To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

Apolo90 · 24/02/2025 19:39

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

Leggings and a sports bra seems normal gymwear. If you lack body confidence like me wear a baggy t shirt and joggers. Tiny shorts wouldn't be my choice, but I wouldn't be paying attention to others arses. Just focus on your own fitness goals. If you dislike looking at others working out you should just get a PT to come to your house or jog round the park.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 25/02/2025 12:01

As a frequent gym user, I do actually agree with you. Yes, people can wear what they want but some women are dressing in ways that aren’t suited to the exercise - e.g single layer bra tops with loads of cleavage showing when really they do need a higher fronted sports bra with more coverage. Usually it’s women with good bodies clearly wanting to enhance them aesthetically rather than dress in more functional sports-specific garments. I’m not envious of them (I’ve competed in bikini comps). I wear leggings and a tank with a proper sports bra. I don’t wear scrunch bum leggings and a thin bra top that shows 6” of cleavage because I’m going to be doing ball slams and battle ropes and I don’t want a sweaty arse and my tits falling out.

Redpeach · 25/02/2025 11:54

Someone was wearing those scrunch bum things right in front of me in class the other day, it's pretty hard not to notice, especially when the arse is close to my face - pretty unpleasant

It sounds like your class doesn't have enough space if you're that close!

Very few people care about wearing snug leggings/shorts, spots bra / crop top etc

I think a disturbingly large number of prudes on this thread are pursing their lips at those exact things. Yes, prudes.

Noticing such attire does not mean you are jealous, staring or gawping, it is just a basic human response to notice someone wearing such gear

Noticing is one thing but peering and fixating on the "perfect outline of their vulva" (or the outline of a man's dick if he's wearing lycra) is what's strange and unnecessary. I've briefly noticed cameltoes and bulges on other people, and then I look somewhere else. It's easy. It's a non-issue because I'm not offended that other humans possess genitals, and I do not spend any time fixating on how much of her vulva or his penis I can see.

Why does prudishness go hand in hand with prurience so often? Why do prudes give other people's bodies so much disproportionate head space? They're just bodies.

Where did I say I was offended or fixated by such things? I noticed in the same way you did, probably because such attire is generally not the norm. I just think it is a bit weird to wear gym clothing that that exposes pretty much everything when you stretching or exercising and yes I would probably just assume they are attention seeking.

ShinyClouds · 25/02/2025 12:27

KimberleyClark · 25/02/2025 09:22

You mean they actually wear posing pouches? The men at the gym I go to mostly wear jogging bottoms or shorts and a t shirt. It’s pretty rare to even see a sleeveless vest.

short shorts and those string sleeve vest things. Sometimes yes, Speedo’s as they practise posing for competitions.

i also do a combat sport where the men wear tiny shorts and no tops, women often shorts and the bra tops.

Brcause people are doing exercise. And so these clothes are perfectly appropriate. It’s not the same as what people should/shouldnt wear in the street

Hexagonsareneverround · 25/02/2025 12:28

OP and a small number of others - what you are objecting to is a normal part of life here - through history and prehistory we never had a system with the level of shaming of women you favour. It's not a modern thing.

You are clearly used to a lot more control and mysoginy over women that men introduced in some other parts of the world and that small girls and boys are raised with, and now as an adult (presumably, you sound naive?) instead of questioning it, you want us to question our way of life.

Throughout times in this part of the world fashions changed but we never had this "covering up" to the degree you think we did - even if you think 500 or a 1000 years back. in the middle ages noble ladies had bosoms falling out of corset and men went around in tights with every leg and cock muscle on display. It really isn't a modern thing.

The only thing that needs covering is genitals and they always are.

Your views are odd. You could have got offended by stink and sweat and inconsiderate men in the gym, instead you chose to be offended by women in small tight clothing which is a safety requirement for the gym among other things. They are appropriately dressed, your thoughts and viewes aren't compatible with our values.

It is exactly the kind of thing a normal man who is concerned for women does.

The corrupt government officials are driven by money and self interest to push certain agendas and normally unacceptable things on people here but what is in it for you, to be bleating along like this?

I smell an incel.

I think the OP is right. I can't bear the wedgie / string swimwear people feel is appropriate to wear to my pool either. Put your butt cheeks away. My gym has a very nice spa and I don't want to sit in a sauna or a steam room after someone with barely anything covering their arse. Gross

You’d best not use a sauna in most European places then, as they are generally naked, which is totally accepted.

Even if they are ‘attention seeking’ what is it to you? Is it impossible for you to just ignore it? Why get so angry about it? It’s like some of you complaining on here about it think these women are doing it to specifically annoy you, which is crazy!

Maybe direct your anger towards something worth being angry about, life really is too short for this nonsense.

You still tend to sit on a towel though (otherwise you burn your arse on the wooden seats)

I’ve been to saunas in Europe and yes got naked as that’s what people do, but people generally sit on towels!

If nudity is the accepted culture, that's fine. Showering naked (and thoroughly) in communal showers is expected in Iceland... however there is specifically signage against it at my local leisure centre.

Where it's culturally normal to sauna naked, it's also normal to use a towel for comfort and hygiene. Thong bikini bottoms don't cover that point of practicality.

Tabitha005 · 25/02/2025 13:08

I don't think it's 'inappropriate' but there's a high proportion of women at my gym dressed as the OP describes who spend more time playing with their phones than actually working out - and commandeering pieces of equipment that others are waiting to use whilst they're doing it. They're also several of the same women who spend a lot of time taking selfies and repeatedly putting their hair up/down. They'll do one pathetic set of reps, then sit on the machine for ten minutes scrolling.

There's also a bunch of 6 or 7 young guys (18 or 19 years old) who all crowd around a specific piece of equipment and each take a turn - thus tying up that piece of equipment for half an hour at a time. They piss me off way more than the preening princesses because they also laugh like deranged hyenas - constantly - talk SO loudly and swear all the time. They're all dressed to the best effect of showing off their - clearly steroid enhanced - muscles.

However, I wear tight clothing to the gym, including the 'bum scrunch' leggings and bra tops because whenever I see my fat wobbling, it gives me the motivation to put extra work in!

Why are you trying to attribute to me emotions/responses (offence, anger, annoyed, fixated, complaining etc) that I have not articulated on here. Why do you feel compelled to make stuff up in order to further your point of view?

I notice, like you did, people wearing revealing gym outfits before getting on with my workout. Me spending a few seconds thinking 'blimey, she has not left much to the imagination' before doing my next set of weights is hardly an unusual reaction.

I’m not making it up that you said they were ‘attention seeking’ am I? No one says things like that in a positive way, it’s implication is disapproving when actually it just shouldn’t matter what other women wear.

wherearemypastnames · 25/02/2025 13:42

It always matters what people wear and clothes do give out messages and vibes whatever you like to think - indeed even the concept of "gym clothes" suggests that other clothes are not gym suitable

And there are even laws around clothes naked isn't tolerated in this country and others have expectations on coverage also - like the beach vs town regulations mentioned earlier - and I think super wide petticoats are also still illegal

Good job I did not mention 'attention seeking' in my list of random things you were attributing to me then.

Anyway, some people are attention seekers, not sure why this observation is a surprise to you.

Riapia · 25/02/2025 13:56

So, there you are OP. Nobody on MN takes part in the wonderful pastime of judging the appearance of others.
Or maybe they aren’t prepared to admit it.
😉😁😁.

Yabu really op, women should wear whatever they want

I find it strange that so many times women wearing whatever they so want is exactly what men find most sexually appealing.

I would agree with this when young women in particular are out and about, but the gym is totally different

In what way?

If you were to ask an average man what he would find sexyist in a gym out fit it would be exactly the kind being talked about here. Coincidence or is there something else at work?

andthat · 25/02/2025 17:00

This thread is wild.

I’m in camp ‘wear what you like’. Nothing to do with me or anyone else.

But if you have got your arse/chest/crotch hanging out (male or female) then I’m going to judge it. And that’s my perogative.

Because it’s like wearing a bikini at the pool or beach: appropriate clothing for the occasion.
