Boycotttjng US Products and Services

CovenOfCheeses · 24/02/2025 18:45

Several of my friends have started a local campaign to boycott all US made goods and services. I have also started to do so because of the attitudes of the President to the rule of law and international co-operation. I have stopped buying from Amazon and have deleted my social media accounts and stopped using US made products. I feel that a country that is so antagonistic toward us should not be supported by our cash.

My eldest daughter is gay and has been saving up with her friend to go to the Dinah Shore weekend in the US. I said I would contribute some cash but now feel reticent to do so. She argues that she is going to support the people who are being attacked by Donald Trump, but I think that we should not give money to a country (even though it was only 50%) who twice voted for a menace to international order and the rule of law. I feel that during apartheid, it was only due to the economic boycotts that the system ended. It hurt the people who were in the country who did not agree to the system, but the economic impact forced the system to change. I think that by making a stand and making the people aware of how their president in impacting the world. Am I being unreasonable in withholding cash for her trip?

Are you boycotting anything from China due to their human rights record, or stuff from
Bangladesh due to sweat shops?

Yes, we are, as a matter of FACT.

Well she’s influenced me, so there. I’m joining the boycott.

Me too, I'm joining. Thanks for posting!

No, it is usually little people who stand together that make a difference. I am not special, I am not eloquent or a fine orator. I think my super power is standing for what I believe in and trying to make a difference in the world rather than standing by and accepting injustice and saying, “this is how this is and I cannot do anything about it so I won’t bother”. If all the small people like me make a stand, then it will make a difference.

we have a man who wants to steal the mineral wealth of a country that has fought and died to prevent itself from being taken over and destroyed by its psychotic neighbour. A man who wants to ethnically cleanse Gaza. A man who believe that might rather than the rule of law, decency and democracy should prevail. We need to take a stand against it.

I guess the little people of the USA have stood together and made a difference for themselves, without asking for your opinion OP 😲
Why don't you sit down and calm yourself down by thinking of Starmer? He's never going away.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/02/2025 22:46

The little people of the USA are now learning just how insignificant they really are to Trump and his cabal of drug users, sex offenders and teenage edgelords.🙈

Message of Mexico's President to SCROTUS

“So, you voted to build a wall.
Well, dear Americans, even if you don’t understand much about geography, since for you America is your country and not a continent, it is important for you to know, before the first brick is laid, that there are 7 billion people beyond that wall.
But since you don’t really know the term “people,” we will call them “consumers.” There are 7 billion consumers ready to replace their iPhones with Samsung or Huawei devices in less than 42 hours.
They can also replace Levi’s with Zara or Massimo Duti.
In less than six months, we can easily stop buying Ford or Chevrolet cars and replace them with Toyota, KIA, Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, Volvo, Subaru, Renault or BMW, which are technically better than the cars they produce. These 7 billion people can also stop subscribing to Direct TV, and we don't want to do that, but we can stop watching Hollywood movies and start watching more Latin American or European productions that have better quality, message, cinematic techniques and content.
Although it may sound incredible, we can skip Disney and go to the Xcaret resort in Cancun, Mexico, Canada or Europe: there are other great destinations in South America, East America and Europe.
And even if you don't believe it, even in Mexico there are better hamburgers than McDonald's and they have better nutritional content.
Has anyone seen pyramids in the United States? In Egypt, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Sudan and other countries there are pyramids with incredible civilizations.
Find out where to find the wonders of the ancient and modern world. None of them in the US. Shame on Trump, he would have bought them and sold them!
We know that Adidas exists, not just Nike, and we can start wearing Mexican sneakers like Panam. We know more than you think.
We know, for example, that if these 7 billion consumers don't buy their products, there will be unemployment and their economy will collapse (within the racist wall) to such an extent that they will beg us to tear down this ugly wall.
We didn't want to, but....
You want a wall, you get a wall. Sincerely yours."

The US people can vote for whoever they want, for whatever reason they want.

People, including those located outside of the US, can choose to buy (or not buy) whatever products or services they want, for whatever reason.

What about this is challenging, for you?

Kittiwakey · 25/02/2025 23:29

@OneLemonDog nothing, go ahead. (But you won't.)

Halfemptyhalfling · 25/02/2025 23:35

How about rather than boycotting just choose to buy from ethical and offline and local as much as possible.

In my experience, in offline life this isn't really true at all. People are getting on with life as usual. A few protests have been arranged on reddit and the likes but they have had pretty dismal turnout. Just like all these people who supposedly regret voting for Trump, they don't seem to actually exist in real life. I'm not saying this as a Trump supporter, just a person who lives in the US and who can't vote saying what I see. The one percent approval rating posted earlier is just nonsense.

Chaos is costly. DOGE is already costing Americans. These costs, both in terms of money and goodwill, will only increase and trickle out to the wider community.

Of course people are getting on with their lives. That's what people do.😊 But eventually the costs will be felt everywhere.

1 percent NET approval. E.g., 48% approval and 47.2% disapproval, on polling averages. The poll you've posted is one of his most favorable recent ones, at +9% net. Other polls have him at -9% net, and there are many inbetween those two extremes.

To add, to this, I'm among the vast (85%) majority of Canadians who are participating to some extent.

Personally, I'm also in the much smaller bracket that, as part of their effort, has cancelled subscriptions to Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime and Paramount Plus (as well as a couple of subscriptions to companies other than streaming providers).

Figures our own dwarf leader can only dream of.
Starmer is on minus 18% with an approval rating of 30% 🤣
He should take a leaf out of Trumps book and start to think of the UK population and the hardships they are having inflicted on them by this socialist regime.

XWKD · 26/02/2025 09:17

It's hilarious watching Tesla sales fall. I hope they go bankrupt.

Really? So no more Apple, Amazon, Google, Insta, Facebook, Youtube, Microsoft, Mastercard, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Baked Beans, Ketchup, HP sauce, Lea and Perrins, Amoy Soy Sauce, Tabasco, Philadelphia cream cheese, bagels, Domino pizza, McDonald, shopping at Boots, TKMax, Ford, Johnson&Johnson, Gillette, flying on a Boing, OralB, Seven Seas, Pampers, Ariel, Daz, Fairy liquid, Always, etc. etc. etc. and no more UPS or Fedex and their Ford vans to deliver the alternatives? I don't think so.

Even if you stop buying from just a few of those it will make a small difference. If enough of us do it it will make a bigger difference.

I'd link to Frank Sinatra singing High Hopes but I'm avoiding Youtube and anyway he was American.

Is anyone else reading the list of food brands and medical/toiletries thinking they don't purchase any of these?

Are you American Kittiwakey as you seem to be under the impression that American is best and we lap this stuff up. Also, when you refer to shopping at Boots, what did we mean what all products from Boots are American?

@Goldenbear I think if you don't buy crap, and try to buy local, you were probably already not giving a lot of non-tech money to America. I purposefully looked at labels recently around the supermarket and it was fairly obvious... Junk food = American. Wholesome healthy food = more local.

A boycott might make us all healthy as well as happy.

Tech is harder. But I don't need a new phone until September. They will either be sane by then or I'll switch to android. <shudder> I don't want to but I will.

I'll go straight on to Amazon and treat myself to a MAGA cap and think of you whilst I'm wearing it.

I don’t blame you tbh. If I weren’t me, I’d be thinking of me all the time too.

I know how much socialism is destroying the UK. Just tell me what is socialist about Starmer? what socialist policies is he implementing? How is it destroying the country?

What is he doing apart from trying to reverse the decline of the last 14 years (although not very well).
