Boycotttjng US Products and Services

CovenOfCheeses · 24/02/2025 18:45

Several of my friends have started a local campaign to boycott all US made goods and services. I have also started to do so because of the attitudes of the President to the rule of law and international co-operation. I have stopped buying from Amazon and have deleted my social media accounts and stopped using US made products. I feel that a country that is so antagonistic toward us should not be supported by our cash.

My eldest daughter is gay and has been saving up with her friend to go to the Dinah Shore weekend in the US. I said I would contribute some cash but now feel reticent to do so. She argues that she is going to support the people who are being attacked by Donald Trump, but I think that we should not give money to a country (even though it was only 50%) who twice voted for a menace to international order and the rule of law. I feel that during apartheid, it was only due to the economic boycotts that the system ended. It hurt the people who were in the country who did not agree to the system, but the economic impact forced the system to change. I think that by making a stand and making the people aware of how their president in impacting the world. Am I being unreasonable in withholding cash for her trip?

I stand for plenty ta. I believe in democracy and President Trump won easily and gained a mandate from the US electorate to do as he is doing. He is putting America first as he said he would, a refreshing change for a politician to do as he promised, unlike the turgid bunch of lying, self-serving UK hating trash we have in charge.
I find it amusing that you and a few other middle class biddys avoiding Amazon and a few other US companies somehow equates to the campaigns of Martin Luther King and others. Get over yourself.

You clearly don't believe in manners and respect, though I suppose you now happily occupy an "anti-woke" headspace where misogyny and telling people to get over themselves are quite acceptable.

He's not my president and I don't have to approve of him, just as you don't approve of the UK's democratically elected government.

OneLemonDog · 25/02/2025 17:05

The US Travel Association estimates that just a 10% drop in tourism from Canadians will cost the US $2.1billion and lead to around 14,000 job losses. Based on the volume of cancelled trips so far, and the drop in cross border crossings, I think it will be significantly higher than 10%.

That's one industry, and one country.

If you don't think people swerving US goods, services and travel won't have an impact, you're misguided.

MadderthanMorris · 25/02/2025 17:22

I agree with your stand 100%, and would just add that on top of all the factors you've mentioned, the USA deserves to be boycotted purely for electing a president committed to climate change denial. How on Earth can those individuals and countries that want to save the planet from meltdown do so, if they're no prepared to ostracise rogue countries willing to let it burn?

I'll be joining you in this action, as far as I can.

I was going to say that I personally would have given the money to your daughter that you'd said you would give, as everyone has a different position within all this, boycotting such an economic superpower will always be imperfect and <100% anyway, and it's not fair to row back on a financial commitment you've made. But I see that question's been resolved anyway.

Luddite26 · 25/02/2025 17:36

I heard it on the radio last week that it is one of the only powers we have - to boycott the US and China while we are at it.

Americans are not regretting their votes. Harvard-Harris, a left-leaning pollster, found that the American people overwhelmingly support what Trump is doing.

https://harvardharrispoll.com/press-release-february-2025/

Harvard-Harris are right-leaning.

Trump entered office with a very low approval rating and it has significantly dropped. On an average of polls, his net approval is currently less than 1% and is dropping at pace.

I won't be boycotting China. One could get onto a very slippery slope trying to take economic action against every country that has some features one doesn't like. If you look hard enough, how many countries would be left?

IMO the USA under Trump has crossed or is crossing a line qualitatively different from all that. Partly because of the noises about international aggression re. Gaza, Greenland etc. (although it's to be noted that those haven't translated into action yet). But primarily because of climate change and withdrawing from the Paris agreement. Even China's not that implacably deaf to the welfare of the human race as a whole.

OP if you want to boycott anything American then do it, but why the need to post about it? What do you hope from this thread, that you're going to influence a load of strangers on here to do the same? Because that won't happen.

Well she’s influenced me, so there. I’m joining the boycott.

Very weird and creepy.

The archetypal Trump supporter.

Always a trumper somewhere. Elon stole the elections! Most Americans didn’t vote for the orange turd

Most British people didn't vote for the particular pasty faced turd that we have in Downing Street. He got in with 33.9%

That's democracy.

Personally, I cheered when Donald Trump immediately announced that there would be only men and women in the United States and that men would no longer be in women's sports etc.

. Any woman who didn't wish that our own pasty faced turd would do the same is probably a bit hard of thinking.

So, there you go-Trump does bad and good things just like everyone who has power-even if they-like our own dear PM- only scraped it with 33% of the vote

I find your protest a little bit simple and sad but if it makes you feel like Rosa Parks, crack on! Make sure you tell everyone but then again...maybe not.

oh another one who just brings in the little breadcrumbs where he states women are women, and men are men ,‘a there is no place for trans men in woman’s sports. 😆yes, love, I agree.

The orange turd has still done more bad things than good. Oh, and Mussolini also did good things for Italy. Jog on with your pathetic excuses for the vile man.

What are your on about, do you have any idea on how we vote in this country and in England we have pretty much always voted by giving the seat to the person with the largest single number of votes- this is why we have the House of Commons!

Goldenbear · 25/02/2025 19:32

Why is Mumsnet awash with American Trump supporters, it's a British based forum, why do they litter the place with these boring posts- bring back discussions on micro scooters in supermarkets I say!

Indeed, FPTP had been our voting system since the Middle Ages, but it's somehow surprising to some.

In terms of boycotting US stuff, I intend to exercise better judgement too. It's impossible to avoid all things US, but I've made a start with X (absolutely no skin off my nose as I despise what it's become), own a Samsung phone (always have done mind you) and will be buying European and British whenever there's a suitable non-US alternative available.

I'm still boycotting France since they tested the bomb in the Pacific in the 1990s I'm not sure when I need to stop that one.

I think the point in the radio was to lower immediate over-consumption to put more money into our own economy after Trump forgot the US is a member of NATO.

Well yeah. In the sense that they haven't withdrawn from the Paris agreement like Trump has - clearly.

And ther carbon emissions per capita are considerably lower than those of the USA.

Labour's share of the popular vote was historically low for a winning party, but saying that they 'scraped it' is not really true.

For a start, in the UK it is very rare for the winning party to have a popular vote share that is higher than the low 40%s (the last time a party had more than 45% was in 1970). Obviously this is because the US's system does not lend itself to having more than 2 parties (of any relevance) whereas the UK has far more parties of electoral significance.

Labour's share of the popular vote in 2024 was 10% higher than that of the second-placed Tories, whereas Trump beat Harries by only 1.5%. If you want to use popular vote as the metric, then it'd be fair to say that Labour's win, on the popular vote, was a much bigger one than Trump's.
