Single cucumbers from the supermarket come wrapped in plastic.. but single courgettes don’t?

if you ask me.. courgettes have a slightly more fragile skin that cucumber.. so why the lack of protection?

I think they call them 'white turnips' so you know you're not getting a normal (yellow) one.

I've got another question... somewhere in the early 70s there was a year or two when a particular purplish colour was very trendy in the U.K., which was dubbed 'aubergine'.
So I'm wondering whether the same trend happened elsewhere and if so what this (frankly rather ugly) hue was called?

I remember a lot of aubergine clothing in the late 90s too. And aubergine lips.

But have you ever put a cucumber behind a cat, just out of its line of vision to make them jump?

It sounds like quite a cruel thing to do but apparently they think it's a snake. Might be an urban myth or social media hoax but I have no access to either a cat or a cucumber at present to prove it and I don't know anyone who would be happy if I turned up at their house with a cucumber and asked if I could frighten their cat with it. Maybe a few years ago I did but I mix in better circles these days.

It didn't work for my cat who was hounded by my kids with this experiment, trying both cucumber and COURGETTE (to use the correct word 😉) , I then had kids getting angry with the cat for not reacting as it should, according to YouTube. I repeatedly told them the cat could not possibly be scared as it thinks it's a snake, because our cat has never seen a snake so has no fear of one. Why would it? We live in Ireland, quite famously snake free. But no, apparently our cat was just stupid and no fun.

I once had to pick a vomity child up from camp because the leaders told them to help themselves to the "juice". The ditzy child didn't question that the "juice" was in a plastic squash bottle, rather than a juice carton and guzzled a couple of cups of the concentrate neat.
It did not agree with him.

The plastic definitely helps with removing decomposed cucumber juice from the fridge. I've learned not to buy them Nov-Feb as my salad-eating aspirations never match reality in the coldest months.

pronouncing basil, pasta and risotto the American way

How do Americans pronounce risotto, then?

I pronounce it re-zoe-toe. Pasta is Pa-sta and Basil is Bay-zil. I probably pronounce them incorrectly as to the way other countries pronounce them.

We called the color aubergine, and I have always loved the color (but not on me).

The white one is the normal one. 😁

The yellow one isn't a turnip. It's a swede. 😂

I love swede, just mashed with pepper and lots of butter, it's heaven.

I once tried an American 'rutabaga' recipe and it was terrible. Had all sorts of unnecessary weird shit in it like black treacle and cinnamon, nutmeg or something. Massively disappointing compared to plain simple swede with butter and pepper. In my head now I really don't like Rutabaga, only swede even though they are the same thing.

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 25/02/2025 13:25

It’s a turnip isn’t it ? I agree - disappointing. Rutabaga sounds much more exotic !!

"Rutabagas are generally larger, with yellowish-brown skin and sweet, earthy flesh, while turnips are smaller, with white and purple skin and a sharper, peppery flavor. Both belong to the Brassicaceae family, but rutabagas are a hybrid of turnips and cabbage." (From "Assist")

I love turnips and cabbage but have never had a rutabaga. Did not know they were a hybrid.

JustBitetheKnotsOff · 25/02/2025 15:20

I came across both rutabaga and root beer in the same American children's book when quite small, and somehow assumed they were two words for the same thing.

Cabbage flavour fizzy drink. Yum.

I love cabbage and swede but am a bit meh about turnips. I wouldn't read too much into the cabbage hybrid thing. Swede/rutabaga looks and tastes nothing like a cabbage. It is indeed like a bigger, much sweeter turnip. If anything I'd say it has more in common with beetroot than cabbage. It's not leafy for a start.

have you ever had root beer though? It's grim. Like the water they give you to gargle and spit in the dentist. God knows what the flavour is supposed to be. 'Root' I suppose. Confused

I meant from the perspective of a Scottish person.

Thank you! I plan on trying a couple of veggies I've read about on here but never tried. Parsnips and rutabagas both sound good! I love beets, turnips, and most other veggies (except squash/zucchini).

I grew up in a house where not many things outside of the "norm" were tried and I may be old now, but still young enough to want to try new foods. Growing up, we never had pizza, rice, fish and so many other foods. It would be easier to list what foods my Mom did serve. LOL!

The first thing I do with a cucumber is take the plastic off and get rid. It gets stored in the fridge "open" even after I've cut it.

If the end is a bit dry/shrivelled when I next use it, I cut a slice off and either eat it or throw it away.

I think plastic packaging on fruit and veg should be banned and I refuse to buy it if I can avoid it but some things only come pre-packed now.

Don't store your cucumber in the fridge and it will last much longer. I promise, it's a game-changer :)

YANBU. But I had to google 'courgettes'. Very strange word to use. Not sure why you can't say zucchini which is what it is.

UK absolutely is courgettes. Labelled as such in shops. Where do you live?

As soon as I get a cucumber home, I take the plastic off as I find it lasts longer than if I keep it on

Bit rude! She called it a courgette because that's what it's called in the UK. Nothing strange about that! Typical Yank thinking everything revolves around them!

But bananas, apples, oranges, potatoes, carrots and the like are all sold loose too? I’ve never seen a ‘loose’ cucumber in a supermarket. I just find it weird is all.

None of it should be packaged it’s mental

You can get unwrapped cucumbers in supermarkets but they are the very small ones. https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-midi-cucumber
