Apologies in advance!!
I can’t get an emergency dental appointment until the morning but I am absolutely terrifying myself. I’m getting pain and numbness on my one of my top back teeth, on the left side.

I’ve taken a picture and omg has my tooth cracked?! What on earth is this?! I am absolutely terrified 😭

so you want people to terrify you on the opinion section of the forum, until you can actually see a medical expert?!

YABU.

I cracked a tooth once - don’t worry it will be fine. Try and keep it clean, take some pain relief and go to the dentist. I seem to recall they did a temporary job on mine and filled it shortly afterwards.

Futb · 23/02/2025 19:43

The dentist will sort it out OP. I can see that you have great teeth as there are no fillings there so this time tomorrow night I’m sure you’ll be absolutely fine, they’ll just fill it. Take para and brufen to ease the pain. Good luck.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 23/02/2025 19:44

I think there is no need to be terrified. Your teeth look loads better than mine..if your tooth has a crack they might be able to crown it or they might have to pull it out. Good luck for tomorrow.

Soontobe60 · 23/02/2025 19:44

It’s a broken tooth, hardly something to be terrified of.

NikkiNokkiNooNah · 23/02/2025 19:46

Your tooth has cracked and you will most likely need a filling or a crown, depending on the size of the hole left and the state of the rest of the tooth. If this is the first time this has happened to you, you are lucky. It's very common. Dentist will sort it. I am cursed with genetically weak teeth which, despite meticulous cleaning and care, break and crack.

BMW6 · 23/02/2025 19:46

Looks to me like a section of tooth has broken off.

Just take Ibroprofen and paracetamol for pain, make sure no food gets lodged, perhaps rinse mouth with cooled boiled salted water?

ItGhoul · 23/02/2025 19:46

It’s broken. It is fixable. No need to panic.

Doggymummar · 23/02/2025 19:48

It's just fractured, have you never had a filing? It's hardly disgusting

TheAvidLemonSheep · 23/02/2025 19:50

I had a filling once when I was younger but I don’t remember it.
Sorry for sounding dramatic! - it just looked gross and I can see all the white bits inside and I just panicked myself. So I likely just need another filling?

Lollygaggle · 23/02/2025 19:50

There is decay in this tooth , it has broken where decay has undermined the enamel.
it will need a filling , you will need x rays to check if any other teeth have decay.

Now is a good time to look at what you are eating and drinking and cut down on sugary/starchy food and drink inbetween meals.

TheAvidLemonSheep · 23/02/2025 19:54

just looks like quite a large chunk too. Normal?!

It’s normal for a tooth with quite a lot of decay in it. Hence you need to look at what you are eating and drinking inbetween meals. You also need x rays to look at the other teeth.

Hekett · 23/02/2025 19:59

You just need a cap I guess. I’ve got one too, for a broken tooth.

kudos to you for taking such an impressive photo of the inside of your mouth though 🤣

Neitherhere · 23/02/2025 20:00

Looks like active decay. Mine looked exactly like that and I did not know this was happening until it started giving me sharp pains whenever I drank cold water. I never had a toothache with it. The hygienist thought a filling had fallen out but when I saw the dentist, he said it was active decay. All sorted now.

SalfordQuays · 23/02/2025 20:07

The only thing to be really scared of is the cost!

Tortielady · 23/02/2025 20:16

A good dentist will be able to come up with a strategy for treatment; they'll have seen loads of them before. I had a cracked molar just recently. On the upside, the crack was so tiny, my dentist was able to repair it without having to numb it first, so no local anaesthetic. On the downside, this particular tooth was badly broken (on a chicken sandwich of all things) many years ago and this very same dentist had done a beautiful repair on what was left. I told him at the time it wasn't so much a tooth as a Roman ruin, but he sorted it for me. I had my doubts as to whether he could perform the same dental wizardry on the same spot with so little to work with, but he did and preserved my bite.

Cheepcheepcheep · 23/02/2025 20:23

Nah I get you. I have something weird about teeth. Fine with blood/mucus/diarrhoea/vomit but the idea of something happening to teeth gives me that weird icky shooting pain in my bum when you’re grossed out.

All the above said, in an act of potential self harm I looked at the picture and it doesn’t look too bad, bet it feels it though!

OP your hyperbole is off the charts.

I'm just mega impressed at the photo taking skills. Did you shove half your phone in your mouth to get it?

Oh, I just thought she was looking for advice / experience while she awaits her appointment. Was a post deleted?
