Doctors should not be able to scrub past wrongdoing from public record by telling the GMC they have changed gender. This endangers all patients

Apparently doctors can have their public disciplinary record scrubbed by just telling the GMC they area different gender (and they don't need to do anything other than just say so).

Basically doctors can have a new unblemished identity if they want one.

"If a doctor had received a historical sanction [i.e. the suspension is no longer in place] prior to transitioning, this information would not be available on their new public-facing record on the medical register,” says a GMC spokesman. The GMC confirms that Dr Upton is one of 62 doctors to have been given new registrations under different GMC numbers, meaning that future patients would be unable to see any details of their doctor’s previous identity by searching the GMC’s online database using the medic’s new name and number."

“Because the GMC has an even more important role than it did a couple of decades ago – recording and marking the careers of doctors – people need to be confident about the identities of doctors,”

The GMC and all the doctors who voted to support the ideology of TWAW (and cough, cough tmam)

LlynTegid · 21/02/2025 16:45

It's not just doctors who should be able to do this, indeed not just medical professionals.

tillyandmilly · 21/02/2025 16:46

Crazy!!!!

F1rstDoNoHarm · 21/02/2025 16:49

Do what @LlynTegid ? Wrongdoings? 😂

Jabtastic · 21/02/2025 16:50

I was quite horrified when I saw this. It's an outrageous situation.

No one should be able to hide wrongdoings. Your record should stay with you if you decide you wish to be known by a different name, called a woman instead of a man (or vice-versa or if it is recognised, non-binary).

SgtHowie · 21/02/2025 16:53

It’s shocking. I don’t see why they can’t just keep the same GMC number throughout even if they change their name/gender. No one should be able to scrub their history like that. Safeguarding really has gone right out the window these days in a number of areas, and it’s scary!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 21/02/2025 16:54

Insanity. It just keeps coming. How do we keep our heads when we are under fire from all sides?

needmoresheep · 21/02/2025 16:58

That’s dreadful. Any wrongdoing needs to be linked to the medical person who is at fault.

clearly the GMC have lost the plot and now want to protect medics identities at the expense of the public

DysmalRadius · 21/02/2025 17:00

Given that the tragedy of the Soham murders resulted in an enquiry that led to the establishment of criminal record checks, how can this not be an issue of exactly the same kind? Two police forces were criticised for failing to use the information they had to prevent a further crime and failing to complete appropriate vetting checks, yet the GMC is actively facilitating exactly the same kind of situation.

And It’s worse because they could do both. Surely it’s not beyond their wit to devise a system that offers privacy but still allows previous wrongdoings to be seen?

LizzieSiddal · 21/02/2025 17:16

This leads me to believe that the only way to ensure safety with a TW Dr is to refuse to be treated by them.

NImumconfused · 21/02/2025 17:30

There is a similar situation with DBS checks - changing gender allows you to hide previous crimes. The system relies on the person voluntarily ringing a phone line to advise of their previous names - and if course someone with an interest in hiding their history is definitely going to do that, aren't they!?!?

Early days Polly
There will be someone along soon to demand MN move this thread from AIBU to the naughty step.
Others to state they object this subject ever be spoke about but it proves MN is transphobic.

How are the GMC deciding the reregistration?
It is open season for any bad doctor to claim to be "trans" and need to change their details.
If John Johnes puts in a request to be Jo Smith and he carries on as usual after the "change" who is checking?

Nobody is checking. Self ID is not law, but it has become the de facto practice all over the place.

They all want to be “ahead of the law”

NebulousDogwhistle · 21/02/2025 18:19

It's insane.

As the DBS loophole.

It's like no one learned anything from any previous safeguarding failure that ever came before. If you have a sacred caste of people you cannot question, you do not have safeguarding.

It’s not even a trans issue per se, anything that creates a loophole that allows people to hide is a bad thing. Surely no one could have a problem with this being highlighted? It’s a safeguarding issue above all else.

Yep

My point is that anybody can change their ID.

The ones with the most motivation to game the system are the ones that the GMC need to manage in public.
The decision to manage the process in public was so that the public has at least a chance find at the information.

Its basic, obvious, as if they got together and planed a how do we create a easy exploitable process failure

DrudgeJedd · 21/02/2025 18:27

Why on earth are MNHQ deleting posts on a thread about safeguarding?
