Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

I'm going to Canada instead.

For those who believe the US is headed for a civil war May I ask why you believe that? Not just a feeling but actual facts that lead you to reach that belief. Many thanks.

There's massive wealth inequality in America. This is a fact. Historically, wealth tends to be redistributed by wars or plague or collapse of state or revolution (I guess). See Ww2, plague making labour scarce and therefore more lucrative.

The current US administration will make wealth inequality worse. They are planning on reducing access to benefits and healthcare. They will give the very rich tax cuts.

This situation is ripe for civil war.

As a protest against the current administration and what is going on, I've cancelled all plans to go there for forseeable.

Canadians are cancelling their hols as well I see - lots of potential lost tourist revenue.

Not to mention the air safety issues - Trump has fired a load more aviation officials - which I understand means commercial flights will be less safe:

www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/trump-musk-faa-firings-purge-air-safety-1235271233/

The problem with the approach of "we didn't fire anyone in a safety critical post" (to the best of Elon's knowledge) is that even if that were true, all the other work for which they fired people still needs to be done, which means those doing safety critical jobs might have to take on extra things.
This then reduces their focus on the critical elements and increases their stress.

It's extremely shortsighted.

Jesus, you’re pathetic. I wish you wouldn’t pollute these boards with your nonsense.
FWIW, I’m not on benefits, and never have been. No problem with anyone that is though. Why shouldn’t they have a holiday?

I would suggest giving @dottiehens the attention he/she (it?) deserves. Pretty much the same semi-literate ranting on almost every political thread. I always just think this when I see the name pop up

Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

dottiehens · 22/02/2025 12:44

Yes, they are so worried over there about the boycott from the people on benefits in the UK. 🤣

You’ve really shown your true colours there.

FWIW our joint income is £780k. We spend a lot of money when we go.

TizerorFizz · 22/02/2025 18:08

Well we are going to the USA in May. Too late to back out! We always enjoy the USA but for the first time, we are going to one Democrat state and two Republican states. We had a chat only last night about avoiding politics!

We were in Arizona and Utah in 2016 and a few people asked us what Brits thought about Trump. They then declared themselves to be Democrats. We had pleasant conversations with them and listened to their concerns. This time!! ? Who knows. We are coming up with a phrase to respect their decision. My DH is potentially a loose cannon and we are so angry about the rubbish being spouted about Ukraine and support for Russia.

We might have been unhappy about being a poodle to the USA but now we are literally irrelevant. I guess we don’t have minerals. Nothing for Trump here and he’s not going to listen to anyone in the UK. No idea what happens about our “soft power” now? Can Charles and Camilla save the day?

So anyone that thinks that Trump is a danger to democracy must be on benefits? The fact that you think that you're funny is utterly tragic.

How would they ever know if someone was travelling with a same sex partner?

I mean… many ways. Same sex partners hold hands, kiss each other, coparent, book a hotel room with a double bed? That is one of the more odd comments on this thread. Unless you go out of your way to hide it, many random people you come across while living your life will know who your partner is. At the moment, it’s unfortunately a safety issue in far too many places so people are being secretive but that’s a bad thing and not something to encourage.

This is EXACTLY the same as in russia! My LG friends were abused so many times when travelling there! and US are becoming the same... this is terrifying.
I'm most definitely boycotting everything American now, SM and Amazon first of all. Google will be very difficult to avoid unfortunately

NoEnemiesManyPatios · 22/02/2025 21:09

Haven't read all (at time of posting) 11 pages, but I hope I'm not the only one frankly terrified by the catastrophic breakdown of infrastructure in that hellhole? More than 8 air traffic incidents since the mango Mussolini took office and his boss fired air traffic controllers, so, any flights at all, especially internal ones? No thanks.

TheNumberfaker · 22/02/2025 21:58

We are just back from the States and it was fine. We booked the trip months ago when we just assumed that there was no way Trump would get back in. We had a good time but it was way more expensive than we remember.

RafaFan · 22/02/2025 22:03

I haven't been for 13 years, and I live just over the border, in Canada! I used to have to go quite frequently for work, and always found the border/customs agents the most obnoxious of any country I've ever been to. I will quite happily never set foot in the place again.

Wizzywoodoodah · 22/02/2025 22:05

OP you have echoed my concerns. We have not yet booked flights or accommodation, but we have plans to visit LA this summer. We booked tickets to see My Chemical Romance in LA before the political situation kicked off, and now I am uneasy about going, especially given the amount of money it will cost that I do not want to spend there.
My youngest identifies as non-binary, both of my children are autistic and both are hugely looking forward to the concert but they are also hugely conflicted and quite fearful of the political issues in the states.
We can sell the tickets, or go and keep the visit short. The air traffic control safety situation is also a concern for me.

Rocketpants50 · 22/02/2025 22:06

We were looking to head to one of the national parks but seeing as all the staff have been sacked I am refusing to go as I think they do a valuable job. So going knowing the rangers aren't there is a big no.

custardpyjamas · 22/02/2025 22:08

aModernClassic · 21/02/2025 14:52

I think you're massively overreacting and worrying. Even seeing your update. They aren't anti-LGBT+ they just aren't prioritising or giving them special treatment anymore.

Go and enjoy your trip

Rather depends what bits of (MAGA type) social media you read. For some if you are not White, Christian and heterosexual you are not welcome even if you are true blue American and have lived there for generations. I know that's not everyone, but worrying if you don't meet those criteria.

BeanAround · 22/02/2025 22:10

I nearly started a similar thread the other day - we were planning to visit in Autumn but I am rethinking. I don’t necessarily expect there would be any practical impact on our plans- although we were planning to go to National Parks and I have already heard some talk of issues with park services and bookings linked to the “efficiency” cuts. And it’s not really about taking a moral stand. I think in mumsnet speak I have simply “got the ick” - Trump has toxified the whole country for me.

(I am seriously worried about the implications of Trump’s presidency on a whole manner of things, but I don’t think it will mean it would actually be unsafe to travel to the US in the near future)

We cross at Champlain - definitely some pleasant and much less pleasant border agents. We avoid crossing at the peak times as they can’t cope!

ThisBlueDeer · 21/02/2025 15:08

I have no current plans to go but I wouldn’t be put off no.

Talk of a civil war is mental - the present administration were democratically elected. It’s not the first or last time they’ll elect a government whose values don’t align with mine.

This is a lot more than a President whose values are a little different to yours though surely? Nazi salutes, Mass firing of Federal employees, giving a private citizens like Musk what seems like unlimited access and power to do what he wants, attempting to access citizens private information, aligning the US with Russia....

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 22/02/2025 22:24

I'm a (mostly) heterosexual white male, so about as safe there as I could be, and you still won't catch me setting foot in the US for many years to come.

The whole country is a tinder box just waiting to catch.

KeenGreen · 22/02/2025 22:25

I’ve not read all the posts but a few.

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable OP. It is very troubling imo

im sure there are plenty who will say it’s fine they’re not worried.

and I’m sure there will be some who politics aligns with the current administration and so would say it’s unreasonable but unlimited do what your comfortable with OP

HRTQueen · 22/02/2025 22:26

It’s fine I was recently there and shall be going again soon

there are concerns but the concerns about civil war (played out more in power play than soldiers fighting) and civil unrest was talked about by serious political journalists before the election but this was more if it was a very close election or Trump lost but the republicans have full control

most Americans are just getting on with life like we are here i

Stopsnowing · 22/02/2025 22:29

I wouldn’t feel unsafe personally but I have no interest in travelling to countries in conflict or where there are large disparities in wealth. If I am on holiday I want to be somewhere where most people are calm and happy.

purplehair1 · 22/02/2025 22:31

itsnotabouthepasta · 21/02/2025 15:08

What terrifies me isn't the salute itself - its the people tying themselves in knots to defend it.

If you have to try and defend/justify someone doing a FUCKING NAZI SALUTE you are on the wrong side of history.

I don't care about Trump putting America's interests first. In actual fact, I think thats what every politician SHOULD be doing in reality. But the lies, the gaslighting, the actual NAZISM is just beyond disgusting.

He’s not putting ‘America’s interests first’ he’s putting his own and all the billionaires first (and Putin and Netanyahu)

It is LA, there are no concerns with being non binary here, CA is a democrat state and the majority of people, especially in LA do not pile Trump and do not represent any of the things that he says. Please don’t be afraid to come here, spending money with CA businesses means most of it goes to people who align with your values. The whole country has not turned into a fascist state where only white men are valued and CA always fights hard to protest the rights people care about. And if all else fails we may try to join Canada! I know there are terrible things going on at the federal level but don’t punish the states that are putting up a fight

DutchCowgirl · 22/02/2025 22:40

We will be going in may.. all the Trump-news does take away some of my excitement. But I must say in my own country people also have voted massively for far right parties and i am not happy with our current government… so who am i to judge?

Last year we were in Miami and it struck me it was so amazingly lgbtq friendly, rainbows everywhere, gay couples kissing on the beach and walking hand in hand in shopping malls. Better then in Amsterdam almost! I doubt it all changed in the last few months…

KenAdams · 23/02/2025 10:21

There won't be a civil war because no one can or will stand up to Trump. Anyone who could will be replaced within the system.

He's setting up to control everything as a dictatorship which will effect all our economies amarketsts don't like uncertainty. Prepare for a future where the world is governed by whichever side of the bed Trump wakes up on. I'm waiting for him to announce Eric as his successor tbh, because he obviously doesn't think it will be Vance.

Foreign powers aren't standing up to him either. We've massively fucked ourselves with our reliance on the US, particularly in terms of defence and tech.

I'm not sure if this is four years of madness and we go back to normal or if this will turn the tide for good.
