Tell me my teens aren't the only ones lol

I am growing more and more gobsmacked with my teenagers common sense and I wanted to hear some other funny stories.

This week alone, son has toasted bread with butter already on it because he couldn't be bothered to wait and it smelt like the house was on fire.

Was feeling ill, so made him a Lemsip. He poured it (literally) straight into his mouth then screeched he didn't realise it was hot. He watched me make it from the kettle.

Today he is working with me over his college half term in the office for some extra cash. Blew his nose, then proceeded to try and open my free standing air conditioner fin part as he thought ' I had a fancy Japanese bin'

Please tell me I am not alone😂😂😂

I sympathised over your lost stock last year, I think. I've done the same...

Last month, I emptied a pan of penne into the sink - neglecting to use a sieve.

It's quite rare for me to do things like that, honest!

@Srepmum1984 I bought my son all new bedroom furniture when we moved into a new house. it was all on castors for easy moving. he didnt like the way i had laid it out so he moved it all and put his brand new bedside light on a tupperware box!! ffs! it was broken within 10 minutes!!! he was 12! my daughter was 16 when she decided to wash her new white converse in the washing machine, on a white wash! all the glue dissolved and shoes were no more!

For those teens wanting to do cheese on toast in the toaster, splash out on a Nija 3 in 1 Ninja Foodi 3-in-1 Toaster, Grill & Panini Press with Flip Design, 7 Cooking Functions, 7 Toast Shades, Includes Panini Press, Bake Tray and Crumb Tray, Black ST200UK : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen
(i don't have one, i'm just tempted)

Teenagers are impulsive because the frontal cortex of their brains are in the process of pruning and rewiring connections.
It doesn’t matter that you taught them all that useful stuff in the preceding years, a thought will pop into their heads and they'll just do it before thinking it through.
It's not "the youth of today" it’s the youth of every era.

We had NDNTeen knock on the door asking for help because she'd washed up the chip fryer and it didn't work any more. We gently told her that putting an electrical fryer in a bowl of soapy water wouldn't have done it any favours, got her to leave it on a towel in the garden to dry out and told her not to try plugging it in for a couple of days.

When I was a student I made macaroni cheese with brandy butter. I didn't know what brandy butter was and assumed it was just brandy flavoured butter (as with garlic butter and herb butter). That was a culinary adventure!

  • Pouring grappa into a wound because alcohol is a disinfectant

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. It'll sting like hell, but if you don't have any actual disinfectant to hand it will do the job.

DS’s XGF has a masters degree in Quantum physics - but asked me how to cook plain rice.
I was actually more surprised that she even needed to ask when both of them are part of the generation that uses the internet to look up everything. Surely, someone on YouTube has made a video about boiling rice? 😀

And a million 'best cooked rice EVER" hacks on tik tok, I bet! 😂
Does no one read the package directions anymore? 🤔😂

What u need is sideways toasters clearly😄

aka a toaster oven....😀

heartheart89 · 24/02/2025 14:25

This is actually concerning how little common sense your teenagers seem to have. My 7 year old seems more competent!

My dd thought she was being helpful by putting a load of washing on the line that was in the washing machine. Only trouble, it hadn't been washed......🤣

😂😂😂 the thought was there I suppose

I’m sorry but a lot of these are just odd. Eating raw bacon, putting milk in a kettle, thinking you fry eggs with a shell on?

Either dreadful parenting or not very bright. My 10 yr old wouldn’t do any of this.

I agree! Even my 7 year old has the sense to not do a lot of these things. It's worrying!

A friend of mine back in high school thought you filled the washing machine up with water before turning it on.. otherwise how else would the water get there? Hmm

Ha, the washing machine we had when I was a kid DID have to be filled up through a hose (top loader)

JazbayGrapes · 24/02/2025 14:51

teens... my husband still does shit like that. like buttered toast, eating catfood by mistake - it apparently tasted ok and there wasn't a picture of a cat on the tin. Leaving the house or going to bed without extinguising candles. I can't even name all the domestic engineering experiments. And he's ex army. How did the army survive him that's a mystery

Srepmum1984 · 24/02/2025 14:52

Ohdeardarling · 24/02/2025 11:24

I'm still confused though about teens buttering toast before putting it in the toaster to "save time" - how does it save time doing it before rather than after? 🤔

It doesn't 😂. That's why I added it in haha.

Learned helplessness also drives me mad! Only present me with a problem if you don't have an solution! Today I've been texted at work with:
"Dcat has been sick on the kitchen floor". I'm in a meeting, not due home for 4 hours so clear it up with some kitchen roll and spray fgs!

"The dishwater salt light is flashing". You know where the dishwasher salt is kept! Put. Some. In. And restart.

"Can't find any clean towels/clothing". Maybe look on the airer WITH BOTH EYES where I put them after laundering after you left them on the bathroom floordrobe.

So tempted to leave home and leave them to it, but I'd come back to a hoarders mess!

Well done you

Right?! I was moved out at 17 and I still fuck up now. Went to get out of my car the other day and walk in to the house with the engine still running.

I think teens go through an enourmous growth spurt and parts of their brain are literally deactivated - specifically parts responsible for empathy and managing risks (not totally deactivated of course) I’m not surprised some of them do things like this

I have a friend with a son who decides to use the microwave last week, caused a fire, but he has severe learning disabilities and autism..glad you're all enjoying hilarity, hopefully all concerned have actually learned by their "mistakes" before they burn the house down, kill or injure, your insurance policy refused to pay. I would give them a stint in the casualty department, where I worked for 5 years.

Home insurance will pay out for accidental fires. If you decide to set your own house on fire on purpose they probably won't as it's classed as arson. Hope this helps

My teen is blind (with a little bit of functional sight). Her specialist glasses are her lifeline to the world. So far this year (and we are only in February), she has broken three frames, because she takes them off and puts them right next to her bed, where she exits said bed every morning. She forgets and stands on them.

I have amd and I have a pocket thing that sits between the bedbase and the mattress. It has saved my glasses! They cost about £7 on Amazon

Well I just went to the loo and wondered why the door wouldn't shut...I'd turned the lock before shutting it. I'm 50

My 17 year old is learning to drive. She put petrol in her car today and I watched her take the nozzle out with the handle pressed in!

Thankfully the pump hadn't started so no harm done. She said I was overreacting when I was explaining what would have happened if it started up 🥺

I think in this instance you are both right. The nozzle has a sensor and the pump typically won't start till the nozzle is in the tank, even if you squeeze the handle. However, I wouldn't rely on this, because a sensor can be dirty or there can be a malfunction with the machine.

But did you ask someone else , Why????? 😁

InMySpareTime · 24/02/2025 16:40

When DD was teenage, at a family meal out she texted me from the restaurant toilet asking me to rescue her.
She was very tired and couldn't figure out which way to turn the lock to get out of the cubicle. I suggested clockwise as it had a 50:50 chance of working and was better than inaction. I was right and she was amazed at my "escape room" skills Confused.

Out of interest, just did an advanced search on one of the super smug posters who is claiming perfect parenting on here. My god, they are a far superior human being to anyone else on the planet, and relentlessly negative about everything, dropping sarcastic and insulting remarks on numerous topics. I genuinely don't understand this phenomenon, what is the point? Is this person utterly miserable in RL? Are they like this with their friends and family? Staggering.

Just be grateful they're not your friend in real life, it would be bloody dull! 😴

Not enough to get the landlord in touch or lose the security deposit. I'm good.

I'm not sure many of these would warrant the landlord needing to contact mummy

Just remembered I melted my tv by burning a candle right next to it as a teen
My son put empty pan on the heat for ages then jumped out of his skin when the water he put in was errrm...lively
