Do your job we don't all have printers

Am so sick and tired of being expected to do people's jobs for them. Just got an email asking me to print out this 30 page contract thingy saying I need to print it and sign it and get it witnessed and post it back within 5 days. Why can't they post it to me? I don't mind signing things electronically but it will cost me a lot to get all that printed . It's just happening more and more not just printing but everything you try and do you have to download an app or fill in loads and loads of stuff and just so time consuming. Anyone else finding this.

If it REALLY needs to be printed… I always got to one of the photo printing places in supermarkets ?Max Speilman and they print out for about ?25p per sheet. It’s a lot cheaper than buying a printer! As someone has already said, maybe just print out the page that needs a signature.

Just like to add if anyone is planning to do a POA for themselves or a relative contact the relevant government department and request paper copies instead. It is a really long complicated form and needs to be read carefully, not to mention signing it in multiple different places by different people needs the application of post its.

Solve this simple and repetitive problem with a laser printer. They don’t break down, the ink doesn’t dry out, and the toner lasts forever. A black and white model isn’t expensive.

we have had one laser printer for 25 years. I couldn’t tell you how many ink jets we have been through in that time.

The Fill and Sign part of free Adobe Acrobat Reader is a GAME CHANGER.

I took a picture of my signature on my phone, put it into MS Paint and tidied it up a little bit. Now I can take a PDF via email, load Adobe Acrobat, put in my details, sign it and save as a new PDF.

Previously I was printing, signing in ink, taking a picture, uploading it from my phone. Those days are gone.

It is faster to print out yourself if you can, as it removes the 5 day delay due to Royal Mail unreliability.

Not when you don’t have a printer or if you have one, the £40 for printer ink

Agree
Happy to wait for the postman.

That's why I said 'if you can'.

PDF and fix the pages of the contract you agree with / just send back the one page needing a signature.

I agree. Laser printers do indeed last forever as the toner cartridges don't dry out so can be a very cost effective option for low users (in fact for everyone). Never understood why people still buy inkjet printers as they're so expensive to keep replacing the ink cartridges which mostly dry up rather than get used up.

Even colour laser printers can be pretty cheap if you don't want all the bells and whistles and look at long term costs and the initial purchase as a long term investment.

I have been told that HMRC have been insisting on printed signed documents. It is crazy when so many people don't have printers now. They really need to move into the modern world!

They have relaxed the rules for some things but for the most part yes they still want a wet signature. All of their mail is scanned on receipt and sent the to relevant team so I’m not sure how they would know if it was a wet sig or not 🤣

We've had genuine "wet" signature forms returned to us because whichever fool within HMRC opened the envelope made the judgement call that they were scans/copies rather than genuine wet signatures.

These days, to counter that, we use very thin paper, so that it's more obvious that ink has been used as it kind of leeches through the paper so you can see it when you turn the paper over whereas you can't see the printed words.

We also ask clients to use blue ink rather than black (yes I know some organisations insist on black), but again it gives more "proof" to the HMRC correspondence opening staff that it's a genuine wet signature.

Either sign electronically, or Print the signature page only, sign, scan and return the signed page with the document.

Scanning apps are free to download on your phone.

FizzingAda · 20/02/2025 16:17

I just say, I don't have a printer, or my printer is broken, please print it yourself and post it to me.

ADifferentSong · 20/02/2025 16:29

Can’t you just print out the page which requires your signature?

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 20/02/2025 16:35

I got a printer for £50 with ink from argos, and it's earnt it's keep.

I just don't get why if you can see a pattern of things becoming more DIY in terms of printing, why you'd not just get a printer.

I agree
But how often do people really need a printer. Many not much really
We needed it for tax once but now it’s all posted as we had no other option
Its the necessity to buy random crap that people really don’t want that’s wrong I think. I hate the necessity to over consume and buy plastic.

That's fair.

I seem to go through stages in life where I don't need a printer for years but then suddenly I've got to print out documents for EHCP, documents for medication, print copies of medical records, things for travel documents etc and then it goes flat again and I don't need it for a while.

WhatMe123 · 20/02/2025 16:54

Eugh drives me mad. I paid for a training course which included a manual and got sent it pdf and told to print it myself and I had to print it as I'd need it during the training. Made me really annoyed as I thought part of the money I'd paid wa for the manual 😵‍💫

Justcallmebebes · 20/02/2025 16:55

Can you just print the signatory page, sign that and scan and return it. Library let's you print for about 10p a page

needmoresheep · 20/02/2025 17:12

spanieleyes22 · 20/02/2025 13:57

Ha ha that was also included! I'm supposed to book a 30 min meeting. Well no as their office is 300 miles away 🙈it's a tenancy for my dd if anyone is wondering

In that case docusign works perfectly. Certainly agents in Nottingham and Manchester have access to that package

Hooliewhat · 20/02/2025 17:25

Not point of thread, but I thoroughly recommend thermal printers. Great for occasional printing and the ink never runs out (cos it doesn’t need any). Downside is black and white print only and thermal paper is flimsy and more expensive (but not issue if you are only printing occasionally)

SwisswolvesLilley · 20/02/2025 17:26

I usually find they will let you just print off and sign the signature page. Saves having to print out the whole thing, but it will depend on the importance of the document

discdiscsnap · 20/02/2025 18:27

Don't know if it's been mentioned but libraries offer a printing service usually 20p per page.

Sounds like your daughter is already an adult. She needs the tenancy agreement, so she should organize to get it printed.
