Do your job we don't all have printers

Am so sick and tired of being expected to do people's jobs for them. Just got an email asking me to print out this 30 page contract thingy saying I need to print it and sign it and get it witnessed and post it back within 5 days. Why can't they post it to me? I don't mind signing things electronically but it will cost me a lot to get all that printed . It's just happening more and more not just printing but everything you try and do you have to download an app or fill in loads and loads of stuff and just so time consuming. Anyone else finding this.

Ask on your local Facebook group to see if anyone can print it for you? I've done this for neighbours who don't have a printer.
At work I send out documents by email for clients to print and sign, but if they ask I will post a hardcopy out to them so it's very annoying that this company won't do that for you!

I'd print a postage label or odd letter for a neighbor but not a 30 page contract!

We have lived in our current property nine years and used docusign even then.

Surely they can send it through Docusign?

If not just print and sign the signature page, and scan it back. I wouldn’t print it all out.

Depends what the contract is for really. If you don’t have a printer can you contact them and tell them that and ask them to send you a copy in the post?

I did this with a house sale contract I was signing. The solicitors were two hours drive away, so I just asked them to send it in the post.

BestDIL · 20/02/2025 14:24

I frequently send out forms for people to print, complete and send back BUT always says that if they don't have access to a printer, I will send a hard copy in the post.

Go back to them and ask them to send you a hard copy. It shouldn't be a problem.

Cherrysoup · 20/02/2025 14:27

When selling a house recently, I had to do this for the solicitor. Drove me a bit crazy when the letting agent used Docusign, which is super practical and meant no printing and not having to travel to the agent.

Sunnydiary · 20/02/2025 14:29

I don’t have a printer.

DD will have to arrange for it to be printed if you can’t and they refuse.

I had to travel 120 mile round trip with my passport to an agency when guaranteeing DS tenancy. I was in there two minutes max. Refused to do it any other way than face to face. 😡

steff13 · 20/02/2025 14:30

Do you have to print it? I usually save documents as a PDF, then sign it in acrobat. I have my signature saved in there.

I get what you're saying though; I have a printer but it stopped connecting to my computer and I feel like that happens all the time. They're so finicky.

spanieleyes22 · 20/02/2025 13:42

I'm having an ongoing "discussion" with them. It's not their policy to send out printed versions

Ask them to accept an electronic signature email it to you. Then email it back

I have been told that HMRC have been insisting on printed signed documents. It is crazy when so many people don't have printers now. They really need to move into the modern world!

I think that's a temporary measure for certain tax repayment claims. There has been a spate of fraudulent claims put in by rogue repayment agents that they need to stop. Once they've sorted this out they'll be accepting claims online again. But no idea when that will be.

GoldenLegend · 20/02/2025 14:31

This sort of thing is rife. It's why we all spend hours every month filling in forms online. It saves companies money if they can push their admin on to the customer, and since they all do it, we are stuck with it. Boils my piss. Airlines and holiday companies are the worst.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 20/02/2025 14:36

I agree, this is really irritating. If I really need to I print at work, but I feel guilty about it and not everybody has access to a printer even at work.

Most recently it was a bank that would only accept a hard copy, for a remortgage. I don't know if they all do that for security/anti-fraud/whatever or if they could use DocuSign but don't. I've signed things like finance agreements electronically.

I'd tell them I was only printing out the page you need to sign and post that back. They can print out the rest of the document.

Tutorpuzzle · 20/02/2025 14:49

Yep, I had to go into an ea yesterday to sign a doc, luckily they’re local. I told them I haven’t owned a printer for about 10 years!

I’ve seen a new type of label printer that doesn’t use ink (thermal?). Let’s hope that sort of technology ramps up soon to print documents!

Usually people can upload things to Docusign or similar and send you a link. Very olden days to expect hard copies.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 20/02/2025 14:54

Youre right it’s so annoying plus it’s sometimes cheaper to buy a printer with ‘free’ ink than it is to buy the ink because it’s so outrageously expensive. Then it prints out test pages constantly. If you don’t print often it dries out too making every document you print cost £20. Wonder how much they save on paper, ink and postage by doing it this way.

Likewhatever · 20/02/2025 14:56

I agree with you OP. Call them and tell them if they want a physical signature they need to send you a physical copy with a SAE for returning it. If they want to send it electronically they need to make it possible for you to send an electronic signature.

StElse · 20/02/2025 15:01

Our school does this, it drives me bonkers. Print out the homework.

I end up printing it at the office every Monday and bringing it home. I have no idea what people are meant to do if they don't have a work printer to sneak off.

StElse · 20/02/2025 15:02

But yeah I would reply and advise if a hard copy is expected, they're going to have to send you one.

Stirabout · 20/02/2025 15:02

We had this with hmrc
Scan and load all documents onto their website ( for cgtax )
Our scanner and printer is broken but tbh why should we have to have those anyway,
In the end hmrc agreed to take
paper copies ‘ as a favour’ ! ( but I think only because I said the cost of buying new would have to come off my tax bill. )

Selling our house as well we were expected to print documents to get them countersigned. We refused so they had to post them but the secretary seemed really surprised that we wouldn’t do her job for her.

I'm really tired of it. Not to mention not being able to park in a public car park unless you download yet another app to pay 🤯

HMRC are schizophrenic. They don't have a cohesive standardised policy. Some things can be done by online form, some things via the digital tax account, some things only by wet signature/post. It's very frustrating having to deal with them on a daily basis. Same with their communications back to us, as agents, and directly to clients. For some forms of tax, they still send paper reminders, for others they send electronically and for some taxes they don't send reminders at all. Same with tax registrations for new businesses etc - some documents come back through the post, some are electronic messages, some via the digital tax account.

Or if you have to enter a job number before you print. I’d be really peeved if I found out people were printing their kids homework on our printers without asking especially as we already have high overheads.
A colleague of mine years ago was sacked for doing personal printing.

BunnyLake · 20/02/2025 15:06

I know what you mean. We have two printers and they both refuse to work, they’ve decided they are not communicating with the server, ever! Like a couple of stroppy toddlers they are! I’ve had to go to my local printers and pay for copies of things I didn’t feel I should.

Tbf The guy that was sacked was printing A1 drawings for a private job. The printing machines were huge so you couldn’t really do it sneakily. So No, not just Johnnies maths homework 😆
