To dump him for wearing glasses?

Lighthearted AIBU.

I have a lovely sexy FWB. Problem: He permanently obscures his handsome face by wearing these awful glasses. He won't wear contacts - has tried them and hates them. His glasses are really unsexy, but it's hard to get them smaller because they're the bifocal type with a line across. He looks like a bank manager from the early Nineties. When he takes them off, he looks about 20 years younger and 10 times hotter. Drives me mad.

Also it's frustrating that I've got this handsome man who ruins all the general foxiness when we go out with these glasses. He sometimes sends me photos of himself - he's on holiday right now and just sent me a shot - and my vagina is starting to shrivel a bit at the bank manager look. It was OK for the first couple of years because it was all new, and we don't see each other THAT much anyway (although we're firm friends so we text a lot).

I'm beginning to realise that the glasses are going nowhere.

TLDR: His glasses are giving me the ick. Should I dump him for someone who's not perma-wearing a sexual impediment blazoned across his face?

Who on earth is Norman Major?

Convolvulus · 20/02/2025 08:06

I've tried contact lenses, and wouldn't go back to them for the sexiest man in the world. Way too uncomfortable and too much hassle.

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 20/02/2025 08:06

Yes, dump him. He deserves much better than someone so ableist and shallow that they are unable to see beyond a pair of glasses. I think it might be time for his regular eye test so he can see what a peach you are !!

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 20/02/2025 08:07

Shallow. As. Fuck.

Nerd glasses on a hot man are a fabulous combination!

This!

I would move on and let him know you're not attracted to him anymore, you want someone who is going to make an effort with their appearance like most women do. There are so many scruffy men out there and they wonder why you don't want to shag them yuck. I like glasses but if you've hinted that his are not a good look then he's clueless

OP is that you ?

My DD was told yesterday she needs glasses YABVU 🙄

I'm sure she won't wear John Major ones.

How did you find this out? Do you begin dates with a handshake greeting? I don’t think I’ve ever shaken hands with anyone I’ve shagged. Apart from when I shagged my boss I guess but we won’t go into that.

I was just thinking this, I’ve never shaken my husbands hand I am going to test tonight. Maybe that’s the end for us?

Who is Norman Major?!

John Major. Norma is his wife !!

BunnyLake · 20/02/2025 08:11

If he’s hot without the glasses I don’t see how he can’t be hot with them. Hot men look even hotter with glasses.

No point in using John Major as an example as he isn’t hot with or without them.

As he’s only a fwb then it’s pretty easy to just end the benefit bit.

@ThisFluentBiscuit what an amazing post. Thanks for making my worrisome sleepless night more bearable. I’m pleased you have found some happiness after a long marriage. So this could be a stupid idea but what about a gift voucher for glasses on his next birthday, or stage a conversation whereby you both end up having to pick your next pair of glasses for each other. Sorry I’m not fully sure how you’re getting out of this one otherwise. But I would say, if he’s nice and pleasing you in all other areas try to push back the ick.

Oooh, pick them together! That's a plan!

Glad I made your night easier!

Have you considered "accidentally" breaking his glasses? Maybe it's time to take drastic measures? Unless, of course, per my previous comment, the relationship is over.

Yeah, if someone did this to me, I would "accidentally" break their mobile phone. Ya know, just "accidentally!" Wink

I wear big, ugly glasses. I think they're cute and hate the tiny 90s style on me. What would you rather he wore OP?

I hate huge glasses (pic 1) AND small ones (pic 2.) . 😆 Just medium for me like (Pic 3...)

YES, exactly! I wish more men actually wore a shirt tucked into their jeans with a belt. It's not much to ask.

@ThisFluentBiscuit I have the same problem with my husband. I was at my wit’s end. Eventually I told him he looked liked Jeffrey Dahmer with his glasses on and it creeped me out. He got the message.

Sadly, he still thinks trainers, a T-shirt and jeans is acceptable in every situation bar weddings and funerals. I’m working on that one though. I might send him this thread…

CheeryPenisBeaker · 20/02/2025 08:16

Or go glasses shopping with him.

SuperTrooper14 · 20/02/2025 07:48

You can still get lined lenses – they're squillions cheaper than ones without so people still ask for them.

I get my glasses in Specsavers which is the most affordable place I can get my bifocals. I have no idea where you write from, but even the cheapest bifocals today come without the line in the middle. Like everything else, lenses' technology has moved on from 20 years ago.

Imagine the reaction on here if a man posted to say he was working on changing everything about how his 'woman' looks. People would be saying 'leave the bastard, he is controlling and manipulative! Don't let him change you OP. You are gorgeous as you are!'

It's OK to say a man isn't good enough though, and the woman needs to change him. 🙄 Hypocritical much?! Hmm

I don’t think it would hurt to tell him that the glasses are not attractive and why don’t you both go and look at some others. He might even be pleasantly surprised at how much better he looks. If he insists on keeping his original pair could he not just get another as spare and wear those when he sees you?
