My sister is telling me I’m a freak - but any hotter is awful, surely?

18 here.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 19/02/2025 21:51

Default is 18 in our house. We turn it up to 19 if we feel chilly during the afternoon. If it's really cold of an evening we light the wood burner. We make sure the heating is back down to 18 before bedtime as we find it too hot to sleep above that.

Pinkypup · 19/02/2025 21:53

Mine’s at 16 during the day downstairs and 14 upstairs.
16 upstairs for a couple hours around bedtime and 14 the rest of the time.
can’t afford more

God, I live in a freezer compared to most - house is usually 12 degrees.

Do you have a log burner or open fire? That's very cold.

We have ours between 18-21 depending on the day from 4pm-9.30pm and during the day if we're around. Never on over night.

Sahara123 · 19/02/2025 21:55

SmileEachDay · 19/02/2025 19:38

Ohhh…
I have no heating at all on at night 😂😂

I’m with you ! 18 degrees , nothing on at night. In fact nothing on ever in our bedroom, and we sleep with a window open 🤣.

Alexahelp · 19/02/2025 21:56

Ours is 18, but it’s in the hall which is chilly. It only comes on for an hour in the morning and 3 hrs in the eve at the moment, during the day it reads 15 or so. But our lounge and bedrooms are always toasty once it’s on.

ETA - I do boost it if we’re freezing during the day! I’m not particularly hardy 😂

Negroany · 19/02/2025 21:58

Mine is 16.5 in the evening , or 15 in the day time, off entirely overnight. Often 10-13 in the living room in the morning but I put it on manually so I wake up to a cold house. If I'm going out to work I don't bother putting it on, just shower, get dressed and go.

18 degrees C is absolutely fine. Any warmer than that is too high IMO, and will make the house too hot. No wonder some people have such high energy bills if they're cranking the thermostat up to 21-23 degrees C! And 26 C is absolutely ludicrous!

I think people need to sort out the insulation in their house if they are having to put the heating up to anything over 21 C to heat up the house... Our house is around 90 years old, but we have excellent insulation throughout, and once we put the thermostat up to 17 degrees C, the gas boiler comes on and stays on for about 20 minutes, and the house gets lovely and toasty, and stays so for 6-7 hours... And then the heating comes on for 20 minutes again, and warms it up again for another 6-7 hours.

We have it at 12-13 C overnight. (And it rarely comes on at that temperature for the vast majority of the year...Only when it's very cold.) We hate it coming on when we're in bed! And the pipes aren't going to freeze over at 12-13 C! And no, it's not competitive stinginess, or a race to the bottom. This is what works for us. (DH and I.) Result: average gas bill for the year (including the gas cooker and hob) around £425. (3 bedroom, 90 year old cottage.)

Whippetlovely · 19/02/2025 21:59

I put mine on at 21 but my house is old. At night I don't have the heating on as I get hot at night. My son never feels the cold and wears pants and still has the fan on at night. I don't like waking up to a cold house so it's set to 21 in the morning and after school. My dining room is bloody freezing as it has an old fashioned single payne sash window. We are going to change it at some point

WhatterySquash · 19/02/2025 22:00

Ideally I'd have it on 20, but turn it down to 18 if I can to save money. Then put it up to 19 or 20 if we're really cold. We have duvets on the sofa and lots of cosy bedclothes, pjs and hot water bottles for nighttime.

In summer I'm too hot if it gets above 25 or so - luckily live in scotland!

GrouchyKiwi · 19/02/2025 22:01

Ours is mostly set to 18 during the day (we're home), then 18.5 for kids' showers etc at night, and then off after 8:30pm (but set to come on if it gets below 13 overnight, which thankfully it hasn't even in our draughty house in Scotland).

Most people who come to visit are warm enough, but not Swedish BIL, who always brings extra clothing. Grin I do sometimes turn it up on a very driech day as that makes the house feel colder.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 19/02/2025 22:03

I suffer extreme pain when I'm too cold. I couldn't live with that at all.

Bellie710 · 19/02/2025 22:04

Mine are set at 21, wood burner usually takes it to about 24 downstairs and 21 upstairs, minimum 18 at night, costs around £10 a day.

Stirabout · 19/02/2025 22:04

Personally 18 is too hot for us but we are used to old drafts houses so into our thermals.
Ours is set at 15 max but rarely reaches that unless it’s the same outside 🤣. We don’t have it set to come on at night at all as we’re all under duvets and we’d never get the benefit from heating the garden

My SIL used to have hers set at 21 and I just couldn’t stand it.

Everyone’s different and perhaps people just get used to a certain temp.

tillyandmilly · 19/02/2025 22:04

Could never sleep with heating on! Would get dreadful headache - ours is set to 18 and I find it too warm! I like the cold!

My 90's house is double glazed and cavity wall insulated also loft insulated as far as we can without risking the (lagged) pipes freezing. I keep my thermostat between 20 and 22, and wear sweaters. My gas bill is less than yours! I am glad you are happy but I think you are getting a bit judgy there.

Wasvular · 19/02/2025 22:08

If it gets below 10 I feel cold but I don’t put the heating on unless it’s around 7 or 8 degrees.

Wasvular · 19/02/2025 22:08

My kids are used to it too, one wears shorts all winter

friendlycat · 19/02/2025 22:11

WalkingWavy · 19/02/2025 21:17

We’re a 23 household! DP says we don’t work full time to be cold in our own house so he always has it on and swans around in shorts and tshirt. We’re in Scotland too so perhaps a bit colder than down south

Obviously you can do whatever you want, but don’t you recognise that clothing choices change with the seasons? I would expect to walk around the house in those clothes in the Summer!

I couldn’t stand the stifling heat and don’t want any heating on at night. I do want the house to be warm though.

@BatchCookBabe
not everyone can increase property insulation.
We’ve done what we can but are prevented from doing any more as we are Grade 2star listed.

CrossCountryWoosh · 19/02/2025 22:14

Mine is anywhere between 17 and 19. It tends to cover around 18 at this time of year.
It gets far too hot if it stays at 19 too long.
I just don't understand how people have it 20+
Like the wicked witch - I'm meeeeelting

It's the drafts that bother me most though.

Pickingmyselfup · 19/02/2025 22:14

Gonners · 19/02/2025 21:35

I find that as long as my feet are warm, I'm fine - so fluffy bedsocks do the job for me!

I hate socks on in bed, they have to come off immediately!

DurbevillesGirl2 · 19/02/2025 22:15

I set mine to 23/24, anything else and I’m cold

reads as pretty judgy to me

18 is the minimum for room temperature, according to the World Health Organisation. And anyone vulnerable - the elderly, ill, and children - should have it higher. I think 18 is quite cool.
