My sister is telling me I’m a freak - but any hotter is awful, surely?

YABU - team sister
YANBU - me and the correct answer

Mine is at 23 - and I sit with a heated throw. If I had to choose between heating and eating I’d rather starve.

12 degrees is dangerous and unhealthy. You're risking hypothermia.

I've worked from home at this temperature for years. I've had maybe 2 colds in my whole life, no other illnesses. You're being ridiculous.

SmileEachDay · 20/02/2025 06:12

TWENTY SIX DEGREES is the highest on here I think.

That’s swimming in the sea temperature.

AND more than half of you agree with my sister.

I do not know what to do with this.

Surely you just do what suits you? I’m not going to turn up our thermostat by ten degrees because somebody else on MN prefers a very warm house.

I also think that it makes a difference what you have become used to. I do love my central heating, and it’s obviously the norm now for most people, but I grew up in the 50’s, with ice inside the windows and frost on the eiderdown from my breath every winter. Only the kitchen was warm from the little boiler in the corner. And guess what, we survived!!

I disagree.
We had no central heating in our first house, and would wake up to ice on the inside of the windows in the winter. I survived but was was utterly miserable.

Bagwyllydiart · 20/02/2025 06:43

Mine is at 16, and I still feel too warm.

Same here. I still remeber it vividly, shivering under blankets. As long as I can afford to keep a comfortably warm home for my kids, I will do that.

lol our house was like that too but I really can’t remember being bothered by it, we had a coal fire in the lounge.
now I’m a wimp and like it at 23 when I’m sitting at night, 19/20 in the daytime.

Augustus40 · 20/02/2025 07:52

17 degrees is hot in this house as it is very warm. Double glazing cavity wall insulation loft etc and keeps the bill low too.

tedibear · 20/02/2025 08:49

18 I imagine is lower than average. Mine is set to 20.5 which means it gets to 21 degrees then goes off. It's not on all day all night usually but mostly. Timer is set at 7am and goes off at 10pm but I sometimes take it off timer if it feels hot enough. Not often these days though sometimes I look at it as I'm so cold and it's saying 19 degrees and I'm like really 🤔 I'm frozen 😞

I don't know how to use my thermostat, but with heating on a while it would usually be 17-20. Would often be 15 or lower getting in from work in winter. I presume the thermostat is doing something as it doesn't go to 30 or anything silly if we leave the heating on .

Is there someone in the house who does? Get them to show you. Please don't se-skill yourself.

Or get the plumber to show you when you get your boiler serviced.

No one else does, it's my house and my boiler. I just turn it on and off on the boiler switch when we want heat. Have been able to program every other boiler anywhere I lived, it's just this bastard! Got a stupid circle touch pad like the original ipod's and never managed to get it to do anything.

Ooh all sympathy. I could never work a friend’s ipod. Maybe whe boiler serviced can help in due course.

Brrrrr - 20 to 20.5 downstairs and 19 upstairs for us. Everyone’s different though and that’s what makes the world so interesting and fun

lemonwrighty · 20/02/2025 17:54

Mines never been higher than 17. Can't stand having the heating on in general and would much rather wear a dressing gown or be cosy in a blanket.

BigButtons · 20/02/2025 18:12

lol- mine is never above 15. I can’t stand houses hotter than that!

Funinthesun4008 · 20/02/2025 18:15

I agree our thermostat is set to 18 for morning & getting home from work/school. 16 for overnight & during the day but the house sits around 17+ anyway. It’s a Victorian house but holds its heat really well & the main living room & kitchen r south facing which is great in winter hell in summer. I used to have a friend who’d sit in my house with one of those light weight hikers coats on over her jumper & sometimes a scarf 🙄 the rest of us would be in a light jumper at most & the thermostat would b reading 19+ in the coldest room in the house, so definitely higher where we’d be sat 🙄

TaterTots68 · 20/02/2025 18:15

Between 18 and 20 is fine for us. It's set to 12° overnight though

Strawbewwy · 20/02/2025 18:18

It depends on the house, and where the thermostat is in the house. Ours is in our draughty hallway, 17.5/18 is the maximum we set it too. In other places we've lived, would go as high as 21. It's a pointless comparison to make between houses IMO and that's not even factoring for personal preference.

is everyone in the house comfortable? Can the bill payer(s) afford it. If yes then crack on surely?

Mrsgreen100 · 20/02/2025 18:25

No working boiler in my home , I do have log burner, I live in two sets of thermals, and layers, no heat upstairs, tbh so many duvets it’s bonkers , just looking forward to spring!
in the past I had heating actually you get accustomed to being cold

Cara707 · 20/02/2025 18:28

I think 21.5-22 is ideal! 18 is suitable for night time only.

Cara707 · 20/02/2025 18:30

Ps. Weird question but do those who have it much colder not get the feeling of having freezing noses and ears? I know a jumper and a blanket help but I find when it's colder my nose is cold and starts running and my ears always feel frozen!

restingbitchface30 · 20/02/2025 18:59

Way too cold for me, mines always on at least 22, but I’d rather 24. I blame my mum who had the house so warm growing up!

catlover123456789 · 20/02/2025 19:13

My house doesn't get above 15. I hate the cold but I am definitely acclimatising gradually. And I use a heated blanket which is a godsend. At 18 I'd need to take off at least one layer. We do try to get it warmer when we have guests but its a real struggle.
Anyway, I think 18 is fine but I'd go for 19 or 20 if I had guests (if I could!)

Side note: my house is lush in summer, so cool compared to outside. I think it might be built on a block of ice or something.
