I'm short of cash and looking to make some extra money. Have some clothes I'd like to sell but wondering if it's financially viable, I mean I don't want all the hassle of posting and packaging and so on if I'm going to make £1 or £2 per item.
Just looking for any experiences.

DazzyRascale · 19/02/2025 08:32

You will generally only make £1-2 per item (there are exceptions of course).

But that's £1-2 per item you wouldn't have had otherwise...

I bulk buy postage bags from eBay which makes it all considerably cheaper and easier

Inmydreams88 · 19/02/2025 08:36

I think it depends what brands your selling.

TwoFatDucklings · 19/02/2025 08:38

Primark, supermarket and shein stuff is around the £1 to £2 mark. Most highstreet stuff sells at around £5. Better highstreet brands up to around £20. List a batch of stuff in one go on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. If its not sold with a couple of weeks, re-list it

ThejoyofNC · 19/02/2025 08:39

Honestly I gave up on it. People want to pay pennies for things and a lot of the buyers are really annoying.

To make a lot of sales you have to have a variety of post options which is a nightmare as I was having to go to 3 separate places to send the parcels that people had paid a couple of quid for.

Rocknrollstar · 19/02/2025 08:42

You don’t pay the postage. Buy some black plastic postal bags - i bought them on Amazon. then you take the packages to the lockers/ shops for whatever delivery company the purchaser has chosen. You won’t make a fortune but it all adds up. I have just sold several brand new/ worn once jumpers from Primark for £5 each.

MiniPumpkin · 19/02/2025 08:45

Yes but you need to upload lots of items at once to help your items be seen. It all adds up.
I just sold a coat sitting in back of wardrobe from next for £20.

AmeliaTangfastic · 19/02/2025 08:47

I've sold things like Dublin River Boots (not new), a Gudren sjoden dress and a Cos coat for £30+

Also non designer handbags for about £15. I think the £1 - £2 things are only kids clothes or very cheap to begin with clothes.

Doggymummar · 19/02/2025 08:47

I've sold over 100 items and my balance is sitting at £658. I just buy 100 packing bags in various sizes from Amazon and wack them in their. You can use royal mail parcel collect so you don't have to go to the post office. I use EVRI cos I can see the shop from my house. Thinking of switching to eBay tho as I have some more expensive stuff I think would benefit from auction rather than buy it now prices.

alpinia · 19/02/2025 08:47

It totally depends what you are planning to sell, and what condition it is in. You can sell all sorts on there now- pet stuff, electronics, books etc.

Buyers will have saved searches for popular brands and will find that item then look at what else you have for sale and make a bundle offer as they have to pay postage anyway. So I find it works best to list all your Mango/Zara/cheaper high street first and then your Arket/Cos/Ralph Lauren/Lululemon or whatever you have. So you already have your bundle options available when they find what they are searching for.

Also don't list clothes out of season. Sometimes it works but I find people are rarely looking for shorts in January or woollen jumpers in July.

GRCP · 19/02/2025 08:47

I had 3 more high value items that went for £10-£20. Then loads of clothes and books that I listed for £1-3. I've made a total of about £120 all in and cleared some space! Still got 50 items listed.

I bought a load of postage bags for a fiver and only have one delivery option available which is for digital labels so I don't have to print, and the drop off point is a 5 min walk from my house. So I have made it very easy for myself!

The £1-£2 items add up. I would say only do it if you are listing at least 20 items though.

Figgygal · 19/02/2025 08:49

I love buying from it cant be arsed selling with the faff of posting what about Facebook marketplace?

Tagyoureit · 19/02/2025 08:49

I don't get how people make £££ on it.

Ive made a total of £120 since 2022.

However, the most annoying thing is that when I want rid of stuff, I want it gone, I don't have the room to store unwanted stuff. So I list it for a bit and if it doesn't sell, I fill up those bags that come through the door so I don't have to bother with it again.

RunVelma · 19/02/2025 08:49

Prospective buyers always ask for a lower price, so set your items higher to being with to allow for this.

I’ve recently sold a Zara cardigan (£18),Superdry coat (£40), Oh Polly party dress (£30), flower hair clip (£9.50), adults Nike Dunks (£20), kids Dunks (£10) - so it’s def not just items for £1 or £2. However, they were all good quality and in very good condition.

Florin · 19/02/2025 08:50

Definitely worth it, we bought a bulk pack of postage bags from Amazon for under £3. Make sure you select the postal options that work for you, we have inpost lockers very near us and a couple of the ones that I literally drive past on the school run so all very easy and only take me seconds to drop. We have been selling stuff we don’t want from around the house and made £500 over the last couple of months.

RoundRedRobin · 19/02/2025 08:50

I sell items for £8 or less and made about £500 in the last 18 months, for me it’s making money on stuff I would have sent to the charity shop so I don’t mind the low price, I always accept offers too as it’s still getting them items out out house.

Omg I get twitchy around £50 what if they disappear or something and you lose the lot 🙈

No don’t use those bags through the door! The charities get pennies if anything at all, there was a mumsnet thread about this last week. Take it to the charity shop if you can.

RunVelma · 19/02/2025 08:53

I also removed the Royal Mail option as I can’t be arsed waiting about for the post office to open, and use Evri or In-Post lockers instead as they’re handier.

babyproblems · 19/02/2025 08:53

I sell regularly on vinted but am in Europe so in the European market. I set prices from €8-€50 and sell quite well. If I am on the ball and upload regularly I sell around €100 a week. I sell womenswear (clothes I don’t wear!) a mix of high street and vintage. Brands like Zara, Uggs, Nike, NastyGal. Vintage womenswear in good condition or desirable things like graphic sweatshirts which I find sell quite quickly if priced about €12-15. In total I’ve made about €1200 since I started. I think it’s worth it IF you can sell in batches - no point doing only one or two things a week. And I take great photos. Keep your prices up or otherwise it’s not worth it no. I definitely wouldn’t sell something for £1 or £2 ‘profit’! I also group my parcel drop offs so only drop them off once or twice a week.

I withdraw after every sale!!! Do the same with top cash back, eBay etc. I never leave credit lying around - I’ve seen too many companies go out of business.

Yuja · 19/02/2025 08:54

I sell on Vinted but price low to get rid. I sold a Boden dress for £9 recently, and some Jigsaw trousers for £10 - neither worn. But, they were just sitting in my wardrobe so might as well get rid. It can make a few extra pounds as long as your expectations for how much you will get are not too high.

Oh really? I didn't realise that!

I'll rethink that! Thanks ❤️

Snowmanscarf · 19/02/2025 08:54

I don’t bother putting on items less than five pounds - they go straight to charity shop. It is alot of hassle - uploading info, waiting to see if sold, packaging and taking it to parcel collection point. On one day, I had parcels going to Evri, post office, yodel and in post, so four different places.

However, I have made two hundred pounds in last year, so that’s better than nothing.

One more thing, it’s not a quick way to make money.

Woppa · 19/02/2025 08:55

As above but buy a roll of brown parcel paper from any supermarket instead of bulk buying plastic bags. Just as (or comparably) cheap -and RECYCLABLE.

Same. Vinted could go bust tomorrow. I always withdraw the cash to my bank account.
