I'm short of cash and looking to make some extra money. Have some clothes I'd like to sell but wondering if it's financially viable, I mean I don't want all the hassle of posting and packaging and so on if I'm going to make £1 or £2 per item.
Just looking for any experiences.

I've made over £800 since I started.

It really does depend on what you have to sell. I had a lot to declutter, children's books, toys and clothes. Coats, bags, shoes.

Some things literally only sold for £1-£2. Other things I got more for. People do want things very cheap.

You've got to have the patience to take the photos, parcel the stuff up, post it, wait for the money. Some things sell instantly, others take ages to sell and then you've got to decide whether to hang onto it until it does.

For me though £800 is a good amount of money for stuff that I really didn't need anymore.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 19/02/2025 12:47

I had been put off selling stuff on eBay because of what I perceived as the hassle of selling. I had a couple of higher value barely used bits that I didn't want to give to charity so I tried Vinted and it's so easy.

I think you need to untick the Royal Mail option or any other that don't have drop off near you.

Mine have all been In post / get a qr code take to shop hand it over.

I keep bags I get deliveries in to use.

Not sure what you mean? Buyers are protected so they shouldn't lose any money.

I mean funds from sales, I withdraw regularly because if anything happens to Vinted you're going to lose whatever's in your balance.

notnorman · 19/02/2025 17:17

I sold 5 pairs of jeans for £20 each on Sunday within a couple of hours. So that's £100 I've now got for a few mins photography and a trip to spar to post

I sell on Vinted but price low to get rid. I sold a Boden dress for £9 recently, and some Jigsaw trousers for £10 - neither worn. But, they were just sitting in my wardrobe so might as well get rid. It can make a few extra pounds as long as your expectations for how much you will get are not too high.

That Boden dress- might have been me lol was it spotty?!

Southwest12 · 19/02/2025 17:23

I started selling on Vinted last month and have made just over £140 so far. Most was stuff that still had the tags on, and some sold for £15 (Popsy dresses). I've still got quite a lot on there for sale. Might wait a bit and reduce the prices and see what happens. I drop at the Evri, Yodel drop off points or at the post office on the way to collect the dog from doggy daycare so it's no hassle.

If you’re only getting £1 an item no. By the time you’ve bought packing (not expensive but still a cost) and travelled to the various drop off points for postage you’ve used up quite a bit of the £1 on costs

high street brands only sell for £1/£2 and item. Kids clothes the same. I sold bnwt £60 blouse and got £5 for it. I couldn’t sell a worn for two hours M&S blouse that cost £35 for £3. It’s gone to the charity shop. I’ve got a bnwt £89 dress from John Lewis, it’s been up for a year and not even had an offer

i I have sold more expensive stuff but at bargain prices eg a riding jacket that cost £400 worn for one weekend for £60 and riding boots that cost £350 immaculate with their original box for £50 so stuff does sell but I personally wouldn’t (and don’t) bother with pound items

I have obviously got lucky then - sold a coat I bought on sale for £57 for £40 worn a couple of times and a top I bought for £22 on the sale for £18 Bnwt. They were both branded.

ClassicBBQ · 19/02/2025 21:14

I've had a difficult time on it. Put some of DDs Boden/Joules/Frugi clothes and couldn't even get a £1 for some of it! People want stuff for pennies unfortunately.

sunshineandrain82 · 19/02/2025 21:27

Vinted works out great for me. I do around 2k a year. Sometimes more.
I do get a lot of engagement though mostly because I see what I'm selling as dead money. I've already spent it. Nothing I can do about it. So at times list things such as previously sold a baby Burberry coat for £20, Armani jeans for £7 sort of thing. I quite often have 50% off bundles and that's when my orders go off the hook. Though I tend to have a lot of repeat customers as well. One lady orders from me every time I clear out my youngest child's wardrobe. It's that often I usually message to give a heads up to her when I'm going to upload

frostydaytoday · 19/02/2025 21:42

I joined Vinted in May 2023 and have sold £2400. But it's all been in very good condition or new, and mainly brands like joules, Boden, fat face. But I'm luckily I live in walking distance to drop off points so I find it easy to post

pestowithwalnuts · 19/02/2025 21:47

If you're going to have a go at selling..make sure that your items are pressed and well presented. The majority of stuff on there looks like it's never ever seen an iron

Some of it doesn't look like it's seen a washing machine let alone an iron 🤢

bananascentedhair · 19/02/2025 22:01

Just a note to those of you who have money sitting in their Vinted accounts- it's wise to withdraw the money and keep it in your bank. I'm on a few facebook Vinted pages and lots of people find themselves banned or their account on Vinted restricted for ludicrous reasons and then struggle to get their balances back. Just best to be careful!

Doggymummar · 19/02/2025 22:01

I've just done 6 washes for stuff I'm loading tomorrow plus I have a load of BNWT stuff to load as well. Karen Millen, Jacques Vert and similar. Gonna try eBay for a week and then Vinted if it doesn't go. Blowed if I'll be ironing it though, I don't iron anything for myself. I have a steamer so that will have to do.

I really think it’s more likely that they’re all plus sized tbh! I’ve lost 9 stone so selling off my old clothes. Did sell an Evan’s dress that cost £75, worn once, for £30 and I sold a Hobbs dress worn once for £60

The blouse was FatFace and I’m not sure plus size people realise FF go up to plus sizes (it was a 22) and tbf if you are plus sized do you want to be wearing a brand called Fat Face????

I sold all my coats for between £5 and £20 all plus sized, cheapest brand was M&S! All immaculate. I only sell clothes in excellent like new condition but I have excellent feedback and I admit I never over describe, maybe even under. People generally on Vinted want a bargain.

Bizarrely I’ve seen Primark and Shien sell for more than Boden, White Stuff, Sea Salt etc despite those brands costing new 4/5 x as much

its a funny place to sell for sure!

Yes I agree, I make sure everything is well presented and ironed.

MsPoppoff · 19/02/2025 22:33

Totally worth it. I’ve made over £300 in 4 months. Just mid-range high street stuff like M&S. Shoes, boots, coats sell much better than tops etc. I use in-post lockers and bought a job lot of posting bags from Amazon. So much better than eBay.
I was clueless when I started but got tips etc from YouTube tutorials.

Jjff89 · 20/02/2025 03:32

It really depends if it is high street stuff £1-£5.

This week I have sold...

A Nintendo switch game £35

A Patagonia shirt £15

A paie of Chris Brasher walking boots £55.

The average cost of items on my page is £25+ and I have over 500 rwviews so..I do well I'll say that lol.

Tagyoureit · 19/02/2025 08:54

Oh really? I didn't realise that!

I'll rethink that! Thanks ❤️

There's been many a time I've been turned away from the charity shop because they aren't taking on any more donations that day. Really frustrating when I've gone out my way to drive there, find parking then walk over carrying the stuff. So if this works for you don't feel guilty! At the end of the day you're getting clutter out the house and it's better than it going to landfill x

Oriunda · 20/02/2025 05:29

I’ve made over £300 in the past 8 months, mostly cheaper items like kids’ clothes, augmented by a few higher end items (good brands like Me + Em and From Future sell for decent prices). Other than occasional roll of tape, I don’t pay for packaging, ever. I reuse old envelopes and any packaging that comes into the house gets reused. There’s no need to buy packaging.

My view is that I’m clearing space, refreshing my wardrobe, helping the planet and making a bit of cash. If I sell 10 items at €1, that’s €10 for me, with no effort (I use local drop off points walkable to me).

KimFan · 20/02/2025 05:47

In my experience footwear sells the best. I just sold two pairs of trainers for £40 per pair, but I agree, clothing generally go for a great deal less - but every little helps.

frostydaytoday · 19/02/2025 22:07

Iv just had a quick look on there ..there's loads of stuff that looks like it's pulled out of the rag bag and slung on a hanger.

frostydaytoday · 20/02/2025 08:09

@pestowithwalnuts yes and that's the stuff that doesn't sell or sells for a low value.

Twixtmasjigsaw · 20/02/2025 08:28

It depends on the brands you are selling. People will pay more for decent stuff - Boden, Hobbs etc. I've sold Boden dresses for £20. But anything on the cheaper end of the High Street goes for pennies.
