Neighbour watching me on ring doorbell

fencedispute2024 · 17/02/2025 22:18

My neighbour keeps watching me through their ring doorbell. I’ve asked them to stop (via the doorbell when they were watching me) but they’re continuing to watch me.

they’re definitely watching, rather than just the doorbell being triggered by motion, as the blue light comes on. They’re not very tech savvy so I don’t think they realise that a blue light is on.

I’ve got multiple photos of their doorbell with the blue light from the last few months. Including a video where I asked the doorbell to stop watching me that shows the blue and red lights going off after my request.

I'm starting to feel harassed and think this is in response to the previous issues we’ve had with a fence. (See old post if you’re interested)

where do I go from here?

My wanky neighbour walks past our property constantly and swivels at a 90° angle to stare at our garden. He cranks his neck so far back to continue staring up our driveway that he almost injures himself. He stares at my ring camera for as long as he possibly can as he walks from one edge of the property to another. It's utterly ridiculous. I'm not sure if he's aware it records him. He started it after we made a planning objection to his obtrusive extension. Total nutter. He doesn't do it when his wife is there either.

Can you put some trellis up to obscure the view?

A diagram would help.

My neighbour is batshit and thinks I have a Ring cam solely to spy on her. I didn’t realise until I was scrolling back through to find out where the fuck the DPD man had gone with my parcel, that she spends a not inconsiderable amount of time waving into the camera and saying “Hellooooo Are you enjoying the show?”. It really tickles me the thought of her thinking she’s catching me out when I’m probably enjoying a glass of gin in the bath completely unaware 🤣

You're the person in the wrong if it can capture your neighbour beyond the bounds of your property.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 18/02/2025 04:57

According to a google search the blue light is in if it’s recording, when the speaker is on or if the button has been pressed so doesn’t sound like they are necessarily there.

artfuldodgerjack · 18/02/2025 01:18

It turns to blue when you put the speaker on. Otherwise it's white.

Not according to google. It suggests it can be blue on other occasions too

LillyPJ · 18/02/2025 05:44

Have they really got nothing better to do? Why don't you just get on with your life and ignore it? I know it must be annoying but if they can see that it doesn't bother you, they'll probably get bored and do something else. (And even if they don't, it doesn't have to affect you.)

I think we have the same neighbour! We caught ours just stood filming our doorbell on several occasions. We had only recently moved in, so I put her on the local facebook group with her face blurred, it turned out she was a regular for filming peoples doorbells and car dash cams!

Miyagi99 · 18/02/2025 06:12

I don’t get this, surely it’s the same as them looking out of their window, which they have every right to you. You could flip it round and you have actually been spying at their front door, filming it etc, they may feel harrassed by you.

Mauro711 · 18/02/2025 06:27

I think the best course of action is to just ignore it and go about your life like you normally would. What they want from you is a reaction and by you filming their camera and talking to it they are getting just that. Being mean and harassing people is their form of entertainment. So just do absolutely nothing and they will get bored.

andyouwillknowusbythetrailofdead · 18/02/2025 06:30

It's triggered by movement surely? They aren't watching you

MyDeftDuck · 18/02/2025 07:28

You could address this in several ways.....

You could get your own Ring doorbell
You could speak to them, face to face, and state how unnerving it is for you
You could ignore it - after all, if it records you then it records everyone who comes to your property thus providing you with evidence if anything has been stolen/damaged.

OffMyDahlias · 18/02/2025 07:30

Hufflemuff · 17/02/2025 22:28

Doesn't a ring doorbell record any movement? They're probably not recording you specifically, its just your movement triggering it's recording.

That was my understanding. I have a video doorbell (not a ring) and the light comes on when it’s recording, even if no one is watching.

When protesters in Hong Kong didn’t want to be filmed by security cameras they walked around with yellow umbrellas up. You could try that, eventually you would be so boring you’re not worth bothering with

Protest yellow umbrellas don’t sound boring tbf. I would definitely watch someone putting on a performance like that even if I wasn’t watching in the first place 😂

You’re all right in that it’s like the modern day equivalent of curtain twitching! I hadn’t thought of it like that and am over sensitive to it because of the previous issues we’ve had with the fence.

they’re definitely watching me rather than it just the doorbell being triggered as they often press the unmute button which switches on the blue light. It was the blue light that drew my attention to it in the first place.

Im on my property when they’re watching/recording me.

I obviously just need to let it go, but that’s easier said than done!

Every time you see the blue light wave and shout 'Evening Tom!' or whatever, at least they then know you know they are nosey twats

I think you've answered your own concerns .
Don't give it anymore head space .
( Or play a game and walk funny down your path every time or pretend your a cat walk model or something like that )

PeriPeriMam · 17/02/2025 23:22

Submit a request for any footage that has you in it, where you are not on their property. They have to provide it. There's plenty of information out there on this eg

www.which.co.uk/news/article/is-it-legal-to-record-security-camera-and-smart-doorbell-footage-at-your-home-akMQD1C0P0zi

There's not an agency on earth that would make them, if they said no.

Mine record me - front and back - and then laugh and talk about what I've been doing. Literally the most mundane things. I don't get it.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 17/02/2025 23:56

Oh shit does the light change to blue when you’re watching?! I didn’t know this and often check who’s at the door then not answer if I don’t want to! Didn’t realise they may be able to tell! 😬😂

To be fair, you could be at work and checking the notification from your desk 😉

CaptainFuture · 18/02/2025 07:56

OKNerd · 18/02/2025 00:06

Yeah good luck with that one. They don’t have to give it to you at all. What a load of nonsense. The neighbours can request it the same way anyone can request anything but there’s no enforceable law that states doorbell cams residents HAVE to share footage. What do you think would happen if they refused?

I have a ring doorbell for safety, it benefits the whole street. My neighbours think I have it to spy on them. Even though I had it before they moved in. Fucking nutters

@fencedispute2024 You must spend a lot of time watching them, watching you? Maybe their conversation is
'Oh bloody hell, that neighbours been sat staring at our door all day again!'

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 18/02/2025 07:59

Blimey, I would hate to live near a doorbell like this too.

andyouwillknowusbythetrailofdead · 18/02/2025 06:30

They are triggered by movement with a certain arc from the doorbell. So if you walk past it will automatically trigger the doorbell to record. Our is set up so that it triggers when someone comes through our gate - we are up a long track and in a rural area so at risk of garden tool theft etc.

Convolvulus · 18/02/2025 08:05

Hairspray on the lens.

Gunz · 18/02/2025 08:07

Must be expensive on batteries if their blue light keeps coming on. You have to configure these correctly, otherwise they pick up all movement. Wonder if they have it incorrectly configured?. My front garden is fairly small and the pavement is close to the door and I only track movement by the door or immediately under the windows. Otherwise the 🐕 would go off on one every time someone walked by!

Sinkintotheswamp · 18/02/2025 08:08

I sometimes put mine to live view if I'm upstairs and can hear an argument or noise out the front.
Although it does always catch people walking past on the pavement. But it caught some burglars too so I'm not restricting what it records.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/02/2025 08:16

If they're doing it on purpose, I'd be tempted to lift up my Jersey and give them a flash and a little wave.

ForIcyAzureDreamer · 18/02/2025 08:20

You could try a but of "dog training". To stop my dog following me everywhere, I spent a while just flitting between rooms until she got bored and stopped. I would pick a night when there's some good tv on and just wander in and out endlessly, doing nothing interesting. It would drive them mad.
