Neighbour watching me on ring doorbell

fencedispute2024 · 17/02/2025 22:18

My neighbour keeps watching me through their ring doorbell. I’ve asked them to stop (via the doorbell when they were watching me) but they’re continuing to watch me.

they’re definitely watching, rather than just the doorbell being triggered by motion, as the blue light comes on. They’re not very tech savvy so I don’t think they realise that a blue light is on.

I’ve got multiple photos of their doorbell with the blue light from the last few months. Including a video where I asked the doorbell to stop watching me that shows the blue and red lights going off after my request.

I'm starting to feel harassed and think this is in response to the previous issues we’ve had with a fence. (See old post if you’re interested)

where do I go from here?

If they’re filming you while you’re on your property, then it’s not ok and you have the option to stop them www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-58911296.amp

pizzaHeart · 18/02/2025 00:30

And yes to that door bell only should cover their property.

Newbie8918 · 18/02/2025 00:31

If you receive a motion alert and choose to accept it (see what’s triggered it) the light turns blue.

I don’t know how far your door is etc but maybe speak to them and ask them if their range is set too far.

eg ‘I’ve noticed by the light on your door cam that I must be setting it off in my garden. It must be really annoying, getting all those notification. Do you maybe need to decrease the range?’

they might be genuinely just clicking on the notification and don’t know how to amend the settings or, if they are spying, they’ll know you know.

OKNerd · 18/02/2025 00:31

My neighbour is batshit and thinks I have a Ring cam solely to spy on her. I didn’t realise until I was scrolling back through to find out where the fuck the DPD man had gone with my parcel, that she spends a not inconsiderable amount of time waving into the camera and saying “Hellooooo Are you enjoying the show?”. It really tickles me the thought of her thinking she’s catching me out when I’m probably enjoying a glass of gin in the bath completely unaware 🤣

WellsAndThistles · 18/02/2025 00:36

I would trigger it all the more to annoy them, act excentric, have fun!

Ella31 · 18/02/2025 00:40

It's just the trigger. We have one too, so for example, if it's notified that someone is near my door, I bring up the screen to see who is at my property. I highly doubt they are spying on you

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/02/2025 00:44

Walking on your own property, on your phone...

"Oh wait....yep its happened again!! The sad wankers are watching me, bet they have muted it again! [wave] I honestly dont think that they have anything better to do haha!! [wave and wave again]"

Take the piss, if they are not tech savvy it will drive them insane wondering how the hell you know!

I live beside a curtain twitcher, and I feel so uncomfortable whenever I get into my car/or get out of it.
I can see her shadow moving behind the blinds. She pretends she doesnt see me if we cross paths in public. It's ridiculous. I feel your pain. It is a form of stalking.

Why are you watching her through her blinds?
😂😅😂🕵

Isn't this just you doing exactly the same back to them that they're doing to you then?

They're probably watching you because you keep taking photos them.

Depending on where/how OP lives it may not even capture her property.

Im sure they will not be driven mad. As if they’re gonna sit there saying “HOW does she know that a CCTV camera is recording her?!”

Yes exactly. Imagine taking pictures of someone’s property whilst saying they’re invading my privacy!”

Is it a new thing? We got a Ring Doorbell for Christmas and for the first month it came with the subscription so it recoreded people coming to the door, filtered out alert triggered by the local cats, and all sorts of malarkey. The DC would leave little messages on the recording as they went out or rolled back in late at night.

After that month we went to the basic service that isn't storing little videos all the time.

It's a great tool for me because I lave limited mobility. So if up two flights of stairs I can see who is at the door and speak to them rather than try rush down to answer and inevitably miss them - or discover it's some door to door saleman I didn't want to speak to anyway.

However, I do agree it could be very intrusive if they are speaking to you through it. while you're just going about your day.

I like the PP's suggestion of displaying a giant Wordle each day.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 17/02/2025 23:56

Oh shit does the light change to blue when you’re watching?! I didn’t know this and often check who’s at the door then not answer if I don’t want to! Didn’t realise they may be able to tell! 😬😂

It turns to blue when you put the speaker on. Otherwise it's white.

Annony331 · 18/02/2025 01:28

The lights come on for many reasons not just recording. Updates, camera is starting, in set up mode, connecting to internet and internet problems, speaker in use.It can go on and off all day sometimes and not record a thing

OKNerd · 18/02/2025 01:30

I’m now picturing a scenario where OP is going off on one in the camera saying “Haha caught you” only to turn around and see her neighbours laden with shopping bags looking confused and asking if she’s ok 🤣

moonsunandstars · 18/02/2025 01:50

I don't know, OP.

I just had a look at my ring app and my camera detected motions between 100 -200 times yesterday.

I don't know where you live, but could it be that they're not actually spying on you?

Just the camera picking up the motion?

OKNerd · 18/02/2025 01:57

This would be a colossal pointless waste of time. The ICO basically say this themselves

dramaaaalamaaaa · 18/02/2025 02:01

We have one, and have a setup where our neighbours often walk past our door to a shared exit. We have all the alerts turned off to not impact their privacy, but it’s still recording. If someone’s package went missing and was in view I’d happily search it for them. I explained it to them when we put it up. I frankly have no idea when it’s blue or white from the outside, it’s never crossed my mind. Half the time I don’t even know it’s out of battery. I imagine she’s clueless you’re taking photos of it, and if she searches it back will think there’s some quite odd behaviour going on.

Yes, I know. I thought what it said would be self-explanatory.

Upcyled · 18/02/2025 02:33

My mum has a ring doorbell and has it set up on a little table watching the comings and goings (if i'm there i get a running commentary) she's elderly and not very mobile so I think it's her equivalent to looking out the window. It drives me mad and it's always needing charging so another job that needs doing.

RamsestheDamned · 18/02/2025 02:37

I'd do double middle fingers and say (not shout) "Fuck you neighbours name, stop fucking watching me" every single time. Until you can find something to stick up between their camera range and where you are to block it- do that as soon as possible.

TheBookAccordingtoIsaac · 18/02/2025 02:43

A recent court case on Ring doorbells mean that they have to be GDPR compliant or homeowners risk a fine on it. In the news recently:

LBFseBrom · 18/02/2025 02:47

How many neighbours are doing this? From your posts it could be several.

A previous poster suggested you wave at him or her every time you are aware of it, then she or he will know you can see the snooping and, hopefully, be embarrassed and stop.

tallcurvey · 18/02/2025 03:09

@fencedispute2024

if they are recording off their premises get in touch with the police
they will be committing a GDPr offence and that’s a criminal issue.

its that simple
