Neighbour watching me on ring doorbell

fencedispute2024 · 17/02/2025 22:18

My neighbour keeps watching me through their ring doorbell. I’ve asked them to stop (via the doorbell when they were watching me) but they’re continuing to watch me.

they’re definitely watching, rather than just the doorbell being triggered by motion, as the blue light comes on. They’re not very tech savvy so I don’t think they realise that a blue light is on.

I’ve got multiple photos of their doorbell with the blue light from the last few months. Including a video where I asked the doorbell to stop watching me that shows the blue and red lights going off after my request.

I'm starting to feel harassed and think this is in response to the previous issues we’ve had with a fence. (See old post if you’re interested)

where do I go from here?

I mean, if you're outside of your/their house in the street, there's not much you can do? I guess it's like the modern equivalent of curtain twitching

BMW6 · 17/02/2025 22:26

Is it illegal for someone to see or watch you going in and out of your house? They're not stalking you as they are inside their own home surely?

If it was someone watching you through their window it would be the same wouldn't it?

I think in your place I'd give a big grin and wave!

Hufflemuff · 17/02/2025 22:28

Doesn't a ring doorbell record any movement? They're probably not recording you specifically, its just your movement triggering it's recording.

doyouknowthemuffinman42 · 17/02/2025 22:28

There's nothing you can do

That's like someone sat by the window watching people all day.

This time through a camera

They are allowed you know :)

TY78910 · 17/02/2025 22:29

I think this is just the modern equivalent of looking out your window when something happens outside your house. I can probably make a bet that they do this with every motion, not just you.

Househunter2025 · 17/02/2025 22:29

They aren't supposed to film your property. If it's on the street there's not much you can do though.

fencedispute2024 · 17/02/2025 22:41

You’re all right in that it’s like the modern day equivalent of curtain twitching! I hadn’t thought of it like that and am over sensitive to it because of the previous issues we’ve had with the fence.

they’re definitely watching me rather than it just the doorbell being triggered as they often press the unmute button which switches on the blue light. It was the blue light that drew my attention to it in the first place.

Im on my property when they’re watching/recording me.

I obviously just need to let it go, but that’s easier said than done!

What do you imagine they are watching you doing though?

Putting your bins out?

Getting in your car?

Sweeping your step?

Trimming your hedge?

And how do you have the time/why do you care so much to keep looking over at their ring doorbell?

Why would they even bother?

LCM001a · 17/02/2025 22:49

When protesters in Hong Kong didn’t want to be filmed by security cameras they walked around with yellow umbrellas up. You could try that, eventually you would be so boring you’re not worth bothering with

BabyDream2025 · 17/02/2025 22:52

I feel surrounded by ring doorbells too. Next door have theirs close to my front door so they see me coming and going constantly and then the houses opposite are pointed at my house. There’s no escaping them 😂

Xxxxx44444 · 17/02/2025 22:53

My neighbour does this and it pisses me off. I'm friends with them though so it makes it difficult. If I have a maintenance guy turn up they will message saying "oh you've got some work doing?" or if I have a supermarket delivery they will message saying "I see you've had a food delivery". Or if I'm doing a tip run they will message saying "decluttering are you?" We live in a block of flats and our front doors to the flats are inside, so it's not like they've seen me out the window. The only place they could see is the Ring door bell unless they were to physically be there with me.

Kibble29 · 17/02/2025 22:54

Put a plaster over the camera. 😈

Put a plaster over the camera. 😈

Or spray paint

NZDreaming · 17/02/2025 22:59

@fencedispute2024 time for a taller fence, or add some trellis. They’re clearly still annoyed(with no reason) about you requesting them to take down the illegally placed fence so now they’re just trying to irritate you. I imagine like all bullies they’ll get bored if you ignore them.

KangaRoo00 · 17/02/2025 23:00

I need a diagram as I'm struggling to vision this unless your door is facing their door with a 5 meter gap between them.

everythingthelighttouches · 17/02/2025 23:06

Please can we have a diagram??

Everyst · 17/02/2025 23:08

Do the same

BlondiePortz · 17/02/2025 23:12

So how do you know they are actually watching you rather than the camera recording what is sees?

Tenthousandspoonsitslike · 17/02/2025 23:14

They shouldn’t have it pointed at your property. But please don’t vandalise it as PP have suggested

larkstar · 17/02/2025 23:16

I don't know about the ring ones but my Eufy will only be triggered to come on if someone is within a few metres of the camera/sensor or if someone presses the doorbell - even if it is triggered the image quality 10 or 20m away is going to be quite low quality I think. If it's being triggered all the time the battery life on the doorbell must be terrible. I wouldn't want mine triggered all the time for no real reason.

loropianalover · 17/02/2025 23:18

Is it not just that the camera is triggered because you’re within X feet of the front door, they probably get a notification and click it, or it’s just on ‘active’ mode because it can sense someone is there. How do you know that they’ve actually opened up their phone to watch you? And even if they have, aren’t they just doing this to everyone who triggers the camera? They’re not getting a ‘fencedisputes face has been seen, check it out!’ notification.

Is there anything you can do to make your front door/entrance more private?

PeriPeriMam · 17/02/2025 23:22

Submit a request for any footage that has you in it, where you are not on their property. They have to provide it. There's plenty of information out there on this eg

8misskitty8 · 17/02/2025 23:28

Think I’d be giving the camera the finger every time.

Tall plant in pot, trellis.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 17/02/2025 23:32

I live beside a curtain twitcher, and I feel so uncomfortable whenever I get into my car/or get out of it.
I can see her shadow moving behind the blinds. She pretends she doesnt see me if we cross paths in public. It's ridiculous. I feel your pain. It is a form of stalking.

gettingtothebottomofit · 17/02/2025 23:32

Hold up signs when you walk past like Love Actually.

Or do a giant wordle each day for them.
