To be absolutely terrified after watching latest episode of Uncanny

Notafraidofthedark · 17/02/2025 18:57

Been catching up on iPlayer with final episode of Uncanny- the latest one about the shadow man in Crofton.

AIBU to be completely freaked out by this one? At first I thought it was the most easily explained until we found out his friends and family had all seen the shadow man around him.

don’t want to put any spoiler alerts in, but the post mortem podcast has seem even more scary revelations which could explain it, but are not reassuring in the slightest.

Can Anyone shed any light on what this shadow man can be? ( no pun intended!)

Totally agree with @BananaSpanner
The stories are interesting, if melodramatic, and the majority of them are absolutely explainable when in context with some horrible circumstances, deaths, difficult family, poor mental health, environment…

Watching it now. Dh 8s chuntering it’s all in Julian’s head and then mass hysteria. Witch farm was scary.

Years ago there was a frightening thread on here where a MNer said she and her friends saw a giant shadow man with a top hat in her street late one night. It ran towards them and they raced to her house, up the path, through the door and slammed it shut, locked it. Then the shadow appeared at the glass panel above the door and it bent down to look through the glass at them in the hall!

That one was definitely a copypasta - an internet ghost story like slenderman. It upset me for ages until I realised it was creative writing. Bravo to the author, had me making my partner at the time get up and come to the loo with me after dark!

I do think the Uncanny stories are taken in good faith...it's not all just acting. But the motives of the victims/storytellers cannot be scrutinised. Unfortunately there is no award for judging fake or real.

I love Uncanny and I love Danny Robins and all he does, but I'm afraid I don't think these are genuine witnesses. Their interviews seem stilted: similar to real life crime reconstructions where the words are "spoken by actors".

APMom6 · 17/02/2025 20:30

I love the podcast, makes you wonder about ghosts etc but not too terrifying. I was watching this one on Friday with my 18 yr old and he asked me to turn it off he was so freaked out about it. I listened to part of the post mortem episode just now while driving home over dark roads and I was afraid to look in the rear mirror in case something was there.

BG2015 · 17/02/2025 20:50

@CerealPosterHere that's the one I started with at 11pm last night. It was the background music that got me 🙈

Listened to it today whilst cooking and I was fine.

Sunhatweather · 17/02/2025 20:52

I love Uncanny, but the sceptic is starting to irritate me with his really illogical suggestions that are even more far-fetched than someone seeing an actual ghost.

RockaLock · 17/02/2025 20:57

I love watching Uncanny, and Danny Robins is great, but I don't believe a word of it.

Or rather, I do think that some of the people genuinely believe they have seen or heard something supernatural. But, I don't believe that they have actually seen a ghost.

The latest episode, there was so much happening that I thought yeah, this story is completely made up.

Still great entertainment TV, though.

bombastix · 17/02/2025 20:58

I think it's largely fun, many of us enjoy a scare, and indeed it is true that grief or an altered mental state can really change your perception of what you see and feel.

Just in case, I listen during the day....

YANBU, it proper shat me up. 😅 Not easily explained away.

I think the people on Uncanny, both radio and TV are generally straightforward, believable people.

That's not to say I 'believe ' in ghosts, but several of the cases are very puzzling.

I love a ghost story…want to be a believer, but often think there’s a logical explanation.

but this one was really tricky to explain away.

I also found it scary because it was such a malevolent presence. The other ghosts seemed harmless in comparison.

The chandelier in the wind tunnel properly had me laughing though!

I think what really freaked me out was the fact that dad had been into the occult before he died and the suggestion that this might have been something he inadvertent summoned. 😬

I used to see a shadow man in the first house I had after moving out of my parents but I think I’ll save this episode for daylight.

Did you ever research it? What are shadow men believed to be?

Ciarán's just having a laugh. He's sending himself up. If Danny wanted an actual sceptical viewpoint he'd be getting one from Ciarán. It's an entertainment show.

Screamingabdabz · 17/02/2025 22:05

I’ve heard better ghost stories from mates than some on this series but this one was a humdinger.

I thought it suggested something demonic - especially when you consider how common the description was across cultures and millennia. They didn’t really dwell on that but actually that was the most compelling element of it for me.

I don’t know why they bother with the so-called experts, they don’t add anything and Danny does most of the balancing arguments himself.

This was a different episode to last night's though right? Or did I miss that bit?

Because I did wonder if he had dabbled when his dad died. Eg, a board or something. But it would make sense too if someone else did in the household.

In my own experience those things come from invitations. Accidental or otherwise. Boards, spells, placed with those kind of pasts etc..

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 17/02/2025 22:11

I also saw a shadow man but it turned out to be an unwelcome side effect of amitriptyline.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 17/02/2025 22:13

Ok so who has listened to the Podcast Season 3 Christmas Special
The comedian Daisy May Coopers episode about her house???

She's not a comedian. She's a comedy actor, and making it up to boost her book sales.

blackpear · 17/02/2025 22:40

I don’t usually watch this stuff, but saw this, and am terrified, yes!

Novina · 17/02/2025 22:44

I'm astonished they skipped the infrasound explanation on this episode - one that has been raised by the sceptic so often (maybe that's why!) There's a railway line and a train depot right next to Crofton.

That's more for 'feelings' though isn't it?
Not for actually seeing something. Let alone, walking into it lol.

I looked online a little - most will say it’s sleep paralysis but I was wide awake when I would see it.

Ponoka7 · 18/02/2025 08:12

I had shadow cats in one of my houses. Both me and my adult DD would see them. Their tails would disappear like smoke. The odd visitor did, they'd say "I think your cat is asking to go out", but the cat wasn't in. I always chose rescue black cats. When I researched them, they come close when something more sinister is trying to lurk. The house had a 'spirit?', 'electric inprint?' She was angry at times, they never convicted her killer. I used to just stay in my Mum's when she was kicking off.

Ozgirl76 · 18/02/2025 08:32

The room 611 was believable because the two men seemed so non woo about it and almost pretty embarrassed.
The one I liked the best was one in America where he saw a burned up body repeatedly - and they figured out in the end it could have been a crashed test pilot.
I like the show - I’m not particularly scared by it but I enjoy it anyway.
On a side note, I’ve only ever listened and I idly googled Evelyn Hollows to see if she matched how I pictured her and she is stunning!

How would a ghost know if her killer was convicted or not? Genuinely wondering!
