To be shocked watching back kids movies from my childhood with DD

DD is 6 and we watch quite a few films together, mixture of old and new. Last Halloween I was so excited to watch a film from my childhood, decided against hocus pocus but went with Casper. Well, turns out not once but TWICE Eric idle's character shouts BITCH at Carrigan. (She's is tbf but a bit much for a Pg film).

Just sat down to watch Charlie and the chocolate factory (from 2005!) and mike teevee says 'even a retard could figure it out'. What the hell!

Any other corkers you've come across watching back your childhood films?

I grew up watching horror movies and still love them. Am now 54 and never traumatized. My kids grew up with all Disney movies and Simpsons , sadly for me don't like horrors. I don't remember any movie in childhood where I was shocked with language. Us 54 year olds are hardcore because we were raised in the 70s 👍

I watched horrors from a young age! and still love them.... especially love the looks when i walk into the cinema alone to watch one. sadly my kids are all dosney and musicals even now they're older

Not quite in the same vein, but recently thought DDs might like Shaun of the Dead. Its a 15 (they are 11 and 13) but we thought it's funny rather than scary and we like a bit of zombie chat in this house.

About 5 mins in: "Any of you cunts want a drink" 🙈
To be fair, I think it completely went ovwr their heads, so I suppose that is reasuring!

I let my 11yo watch this with me as she’s fairly mature and has a strong stomach for swearing and gore and I forget about the party where Simon Pegg says “Get fucked four eyes” - I thought DD was gonna burst a spleen she laughed so hard

Heatherjayne1972 · 17/02/2025 19:33

I think some of these films have been re rated to a lower category.
I wasn’t allowed to go to the cinema to see ghostbusters or back to the future as I wasn’t 15 at the time

annoyed me a lot at the time

alittlebitofcake · 17/02/2025 19:33

Made the mistake of trying to watch Weird Science with 11yo the other week.

I'd forgotten how rude it was!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/02/2025 19:35

@KimGa how did you discuss the songs?
(excerpts from Summer Nights)
Tell me more, tell me more
Did you get very far?
...
Tell me more, tell me more
Did she put up a fight?
...
Well, she got friendly down in the sand...
Well, she was good, you know what I mean
...

I'd be like 😵‍💫🙉🙈

I saw Towering inferno when I was about 8 at the cinema. Nightmares for years afterwards! Goodness knows why my mother took us to see that!

Mind you, I have always had to have a fire escape plan whenever I stay anywhere.

I do actually love dinosaurs now and have a 🦖 🦕 tattoo. I still have the odd anxiety dream where a Dino is trying to get me though. I'm just not a scary movie person at all. If I ever watch one now I end up having nightmares and I'm nearly 40 😂

An escape plan is always good. I have the same but for zombies...just in case.

Wolf of wall street is one of my dds (18) favourite films so the woke brigade isn't totally alive amongst the young!

Tbf that's based on a true life story in an autobiography isn't it?

I'm not sure how you forgot that to be honest! The plot is pretty much: 'teenage boys want to get laid so create a living sex doll!'

There are lots of examples like that, but the worst in my opinion is the film ‘Little Rascals’

so much wrong with that I don’t know where to start

I love that film, all my children watched it over and over again and found it hilarious. We still have some favourite quotes from it, along with the Princess Bride. They are mid 20s up to early 30s. I'm sure it wouldn't pass the political correctness test of today but I don't remember anything particularly offensive about it. I don't think there is much comedy in film or TV that would pass today's PC standards pre 2010 to be honest.

I remember taking my DC to see Jurassic Park when it first came out in 1993 and was horrified that it was given a PG rating. I thought it was terrifying for children. Actually traumatising.

It was re-classified as a 12a in 2023.

RJ2023 · 17/02/2025 19:38

Don't ever let your children watch "Through the Dragon's Eye" - it was a "Look and Read" childrens programme pretty much every primary school child was forced to watch in the late 1980s / early 90s. I had nightmares for months about that. I've just found a few episodes on YouTube whilst writing this post and it still scares me!!!

I never understood why people thing Greese is a family show. Quite apart from the whole teenage pregnancy storyline, I hate the message it gives when Sandy basically totally changes herself to get the boy.

Completely agree. Hated it as a child. Couldn’t understand why anyone thought the messages in it were Ok. Hate it even more as an adult. All
manner of wrong!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 17/02/2025 19:39

Wish people would stop mentioning Shaun of the Dead as it keeps reminding me that I saw it at the cinema 21 years ago and am now antiquated.

Splash! Absolutely love it and thought DD would love a mermaid film.

Very first shot is a chubby boy looking up girls skirts on a boat (bad enough!). This opening bit is all in black and white and is where Tom Hanks' character is a kid and sees a mermaid. So to show the transition to current day? Now in colour, John Caddy's character is looking up womens skirts!!! A grown ass adult male!

Edited

One of my all time favourite films. They cut out both scenes of John Candy's character upskirting for TV now. Along with the "I've got a 12 inch Penistone!" line said by the sane character later on, which is far less offensive!

I'm not remotely bothered by swearing, but I remember being surprised to see "bloody" being used multiple times in Harry Potter. I'm not sure whether that is transfered to the film script or not.

Is bloody swearing?! I wouldn’t say it is!

Still not appropriate for young teens ( when she first watched it) nowadays 😂 It's usually parents who are offended for them!

I wonder what rating, "When The Wind Blows" had in the UK? Google is not being very helpful. That could have turned into a very distressing evening for those who tuned in or rented it from the video shop thinking it was similar to, "The Snowman."

According to the BBFC website, it's a PG (and has been since its 1987 release).

NoseyFarkers · 17/02/2025 19:40

We watched Gremlins with our eldest dc when they were about 6 and 8.

All the gremlins stuff - fine.

Total horror moment - the Santa's not real bombshell drop 😱 Totally did NOT recall that 😬

No, definitely not appropriate for young teens. That said, I was well in to playing grand theft auto when I was a young teen

Wow yes, I mean I thought it was hilarious when I was about 14. And I’d probably watch it again
now (not with my 11 year old!) The basic premise is exactly that. Two teenage boys creating a living fantasy woman for them to…..well, do what teenage boys do!

Just came to post about Weird science.

Police academy as well.

Watched all sorts when I was really young including Rocky Horror and Nightmare on Elm st. Although don't have much of a relationship with my parents anymore.

Why does everyone always ignore that Danny also changes everything about him to be the best possible man for Sandy? I agree there are huge issues with Grease but she isn’t the only one making changes

I agree with this! He spent months bettering himself (lettering in sport isn’t overnight) while she had a last minute makeover. People only look at the outfit 😂

Fucking love TTDE even now! The death narrator safety warning adverts from the 70s give me the heebies now, even though I wasn't born when the were broadcast.
