To be shocked watching back kids movies from my childhood with DD

DD is 6 and we watch quite a few films together, mixture of old and new. Last Halloween I was so excited to watch a film from my childhood, decided against hocus pocus but went with Casper. Well, turns out not once but TWICE Eric idle's character shouts BITCH at Carrigan. (She's is tbf but a bit much for a Pg film).

Just sat down to watch Charlie and the chocolate factory (from 2005!) and mike teevee says 'even a retard could figure it out'. What the hell!

Any other corkers you've come across watching back your childhood films?

Just rewatched Grease for the first time in years with my dd. There’s a lot wrong with it much as we love the songs.

Danny trying out school sports and getting a cardigan to get Sandy to notice him again is not comparable to the changes Sandy has to make for him. He’s embarrassed to be seen with her in front of his mates (because he thinks she’s uncool/uptight). She has to change everything about the way she dresses and acts (becoming racy and suggestive) to get him to be ok with being seen with him publicly.

He tries to push her further than she wants to go with him at the drive in. His gang of mates are constantly looking up girls skirts and being generally leacherous. Vince Fontain is a middle aged man and all over one of the school girls at the dance with no suggestion that it isn’t fine. I could go on!

Does he though? He puts a new jacket on and says he’ll stop being a dick. Hardly a huge change

He earned a letterman jacket that could only be given through hard work when he joined the track team. He even said that he’d been running while the rest of the t birds were out stealing hubcaps. So I’ve always viewed it that he was the one who put the effort in, which she literally just changed clothes

To be honest the woke sanitised dumbed down kids films of 2025 are more cringe than a bit of home alone violence. This thread is ridiculous

I kind of think this is true about kids films now. A lot of them are really bad.

Grease prompted me to ask my mum what a virgin was when I was about 5

My son asked me that when he was about 7 on the bus! I cheated and told him it was an airline!

BreezyScroller · 17/02/2025 18:54

We all survived, and no one was shocked or traumatised.

We've gone way too far and treat all the kids like babies until they are 18.

But Grease was set in the 50s where this would have been normal. It's just different times I guess

TheatreTraveller · 17/02/2025 18:56

DS7 LOVES all the 80's stuff...his favourite ever movies are Never Ending Story, Labyrinth, Ghostbusters, Tron, Back to the Future, he watched all the Jurrasic Park/World movies from about 3, plus all the Harry Potters. He loves movies and theatre though and has never been scared as he knows they're not real. DD4 also asks for Labyrinth (Baby and the Goblins movie) They saw Wicked at the cinema at Christmas at 6 and 3, sat beautifully and neither of them phased in the slightest. I just think different kids...I would never watch a horror/scary movie but we all love fantasy.

Velmy · 17/02/2025 18:56

Before Joe Pesci dies, I'd give absolutely anything for an 18-rated Home Alone sequel where the Wet Bandits have one more shot at Kevin, and he rigs that massive house up with a bunch of Saw-esque deathtraps.

-Dark Crystal

-Never Ending Story was the 1st film I recall seeing in a cinema when I was about 6 and absolutely loved it. Watching it as an adult, the laser eyes which can kill you and Artax, the horse dying in the swamp of sadness were really traumatic!

-Return to Oz. The weird talking heads in jars and the women replacing her head all the time, planning electrotherapy on Dorothy and those creepy wheeler things 😱

Ah, poor Artex. I think Noah Hathaway as Atreyu was my first childhood crush. Very strange film all round but intelligent, I'll give it that. I tried to read the original novel translated from German but I think I gave up. It was sort of in the same category as trying to read the original Wizard of Oz book.

TV but Grange Hill was bloody shocking back in the day with the kids throwing racist insults at each other, at shopkeepers etc.

It was one we were forbidden from watching as school age kids. Mum thought it was dire, and would pollute our minds and tbf it probably would have done.

Wow, I forgot it's MN so I have put light-hearted in the title to keep the no-sense-of-humour Mnetters out

This thread wasn't intended to be light-hearted though going by the op and first posts. It's only "light-hearted" in retrospect when people disagree and they get called humourless, which is ironic because the "humourless found Home Alone funny/silly rather than "too much". 🤔

Oh, get a grip yourself. How much of a special snowflake are you, that you can't appreciate a bit of humor?

True, but when watching with my son and daughter now, there was so much that was wrong by todays standards and unchecked that it had to be followed by me delivering an impromptu pre lesson afterwards.

He earned a letter for being on a sports team. Usually that means you have to participate in a good number of the years games or competitions for whatever your sport is.

That was the point of all the scenes where he's trying to figure out what sport to do.

I grew up watching horror movies and still love them. Am now 54 and never traumatized. My kids grew up with all Disney movies and Simpsons , sadly for me don't like horrors. I don't remember any movie in childhood where I was shocked with language. Us 54 year olds are hardcore because we were raised in the 70s 👍

Yeah I grew up watching horrors too. Nothing really phases me on TV or film. My friend was telling me not to watch The Substance as apparently it's sick and disgusting. I want to watch it even more now!

I remember when I was around 10 in primary school the teacher was telling us about a film called Midnight Express that was very violent, shocking and totally unsuitable for children. I piped up "I've seen it!" My parents and I didn't know about age certificates for films!

meganorks · 17/02/2025 19:05

Splash! Absolutely love it and thought DD would love a mermaid film.

Very first shot is a chubby boy looking up girls skirts on a boat (bad enough!). This opening bit is all in black and white and is where Tom Hanks' character is a kid and sees a mermaid. So to show the transition to current day? Now in colour, John Caddy's character is looking up womens skirts!!! A grown ass adult male!

You are supposed to think Vince is a lech, what do you mean you are supposed to think it is fine? Do you need the film to spell it out for you?

the goonies should be a safer one,
that said i was watching the terminator ones, Robocop, mortal Kombat, universal soldier in my early teens

Is the Goonies the one where they won't let the fat kid ('Chunk', predictably) come inside the house unless he pulls up his top and does a dance that makes all his torso fat wobble?

You can hardly criticize the film for plot points you've totally made up.

All the sexual innuendo in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. There is an awful lot of children being instructed to rub knobs in that film.

😂😂

🤣🤣🤣 I remember screeching “she’s a real pussy wagon” around the house when I was around 10 after watching Grease. I loved that film, didn’t even occur to me that it was rude.

See also “you are supreme, the chicks’ll cream for grease lightning!” 🤣

My youngest is now a teenager (13) and it’s a minefield sitting down to watch some of the old classics with him.
I went for a safe option the other night, trains planes and automobiles - all fine pretty much until Steve Martin goes off on a rampage and uses the word fucking about 20 times in a minute 😂
to be fair I don’t mind the odd bit of swearing in stuff and it was a 15 so my own fault!
But I do agree, and if anyone has any recommendations for any old classics to watch with nothing too hardcore I’m all ears.

Oh DS and I I just rewatched that just before Christmas! That scene is hilarious! Love the whole film.

I wonder what rating, "When The Wind Blows" had in the UK? Google is not being very helpful. That could have turned into a very distressing evening for those who tuned in or rented it from the video shop thinking it was similar to, "The Snowman."

Absolutely harrowing film (incredible but harrowing!) DEF not for kids! ☢️ 😵 💀
