To be shocked watching back kids movies from my childhood with DD

DD is 6 and we watch quite a few films together, mixture of old and new. Last Halloween I was so excited to watch a film from my childhood, decided against hocus pocus but went with Casper. Well, turns out not once but TWICE Eric idle's character shouts BITCH at Carrigan. (She's is tbf but a bit much for a Pg film).

Just sat down to watch Charlie and the chocolate factory (from 2005!) and mike teevee says 'even a retard could figure it out'. What the hell!

Any other corkers you've come across watching back your childhood films?

Watched Ghostbusters with DD - the scary bits were fine but keeping a straight face when the ghost starts going down on one of the ghostbusters is as a struggle. I don’t remember that at all but honestly I probably didn’t realise what a blowjob was when I watched it last! Dd11 was delightfully oblivious

The nail through the foot of the thief who may kill the boy in the house they are trying to rob? My sympathy is not with the Wet Bandits.

I don't think anyone was talking about sympathy

Same! watched it recently and cringed at that bit as well. Think it was only a PG when released in the cinema

TV but Grange Hill was bloody shocking back in the day with the kids throwing racist insults at each other, at shopkeepers etc.

Grange Hill put the far of god into me over going to big school. I was convinced I would be beaten up daily and become a prolific shoplifter/heroin addict all before half term. Even if all I had to do was Just Say No.

Dizzybob · 17/02/2025 18:43

In Beethoven where the mum just point blank refuses to rejoin the workforce. It just seemed really dated.

Gremlins was a 15 when it was originally released. It’s now a 12A so certainly not intended as a film for young kids.

I was 9 when it was released on video, I remember the Friday night excitement when we went to Blockbuster and it was in stock 😆 Can't beat being a child of the 80s. There were no boundaries 😂

Some of the shit you could rent from the video shop was nuts abd really depraved. I was subjected to all sorts of horror movies at a young age and hate them now. Nobody cared about the age certifications. Never understood slasher movies.

Of course there used to be things like the joy of sex/how to shag films and soft porn disguised at a movie (that Michael Douglas used to always get his arse out on) that a lot of the older looking kids would rent out for a viewing and everyone used to collectively laugh at.

@Redheadedstepchild I have never watched Gremlins bizarrely!

Oh please do! It's rather good! Although when I got my chihuahua puppy the, "Don't get it wet!" jokes were a plenty.

It's a great film with great music.
If you dissect almost any film, nursery rhyme, fairy story, cartoon, and you are looking to be offended, you will always find something to offend.🙄

Totally agree 👍

My youngest is now a teenager (13) and it’s a minefield sitting down to watch some of the old classics with him.
I went for a safe option the other night, trains planes and automobiles - all fine pretty much until Steve Martin goes off on a rampage and uses the word fucking about 20 times in a minute 😂
to be fair I don’t mind the odd bit of swearing in stuff and it was a 15 so my own fault!
But I do agree, and if anyone has any recommendations for any old classics to watch with nothing too hardcore I’m all ears.

That is one of my favourite movies scenes. DH and I often refer to cars as “4 fucking wheels and a seat”

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 17/02/2025 18:44

Drop Dead Fred was my absolute favourite film when I was about 6. I watched it all the time. I've no idea what my mum was thinking!

The only one that shocked me was rewatching The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I loved it when I was little. I hadn't remembered how dark it was. That totally went over my head when I was a kid.

Cupcakes2035 · 17/02/2025 18:44

the goonies should be a safer one,
that said i was watching the terminator ones, Robocop, mortal Kombat, universal soldier in my early teens

Actually I do have a bit of sympathy with them because I now find Kevin to be a pain in the arse 😬.

Yeah but you don't actually see the nail go in his foot! 😆

Yes we do. Dont we?! Mandela effect?

I never understood why people thing Greese is a family show. Quite apart from the whole teenage pregnancy storyline, I hate the message it gives when Sandy basically totally changes herself to get the boy.

I think it's a bit deeper than that really - Which I realized sounds crazy for a bit of a silly movie but I think it's true.

Danny also makes changes to be with Sandy - more substantial ones in some ways, he does a lot of work joining a sports team to earn a letter. Rather than just a change of clothes.

Ultimately I think the point was, when they met, they were outside all of the social conventions, they really connected as individuals. But when they were back in normal society, all the expectations of their cliques became an issue - Sandy's take on things is in it's own way as distorted as Danny's, her version of the story isn't totally reliable either.

In the end, they both decide in their own way that they can live within the social conventions they can't change, in part because those aren't really the important thing.

You get a similar theme of outward presentation vs inward truth with the pregnancy story, and Rizzo's attitude in general - she puts on an act but is also trying hard to be authentic and hates others being inauthentic.

I was a bit shocked when I rematches Gremlins recently. The mother putting a gremlin in the microwave and other violence.

gremlins, father gets stuck down the chimney, so my dc realised there was no father christmas

Why does everyone always ignore that Danny also changes everything about him to be the best possible man for Sandy? I agree there are huge issues with Grease but she isn’t the only one making changes

Does he though? He puts a new jacket on and says he’ll stop being a dick. Hardly a huge change

JC03745 · 17/02/2025 18:47

-Dark Crystal

-Never Ending Story was the 1st film I recall seeing in a cinema when I was about 6 and absolutely loved it. Watching it as an adult, the laser eyes which can kill you and Artax, the horse dying in the swamp of sadness were really traumatic!

-Return to Oz. The weird talking heads in jars and the women replacing her head all the time, planning electrotherapy on Dorothy and those creepy wheeler things 😱

I know but as an adult I struggle to find one likeable character in HA, other than Marley.

It might have been because his whole personality involved being a dick. But the change only last for 2.5 seconds so we'll never know.

Showercap22 · 17/02/2025 18:51

I used to watch Grease loads as a kid/teen.

Most of it went completely over my head. As it would anyone else under a certain age.

Therefore in that respect, they're all harmless.
It only becomes disturbing when you watch it all as an adult and realise what some of it actually meant.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 17/02/2025 18:51

Lots of delicate sensitivities on this thread! Huge issues with Grease 😂😂😂 Home Alone too violent 🤭 And there's me taking Grease to be a fun film with fabulous music depicting a former era, and Home Alone as farce. Some people appear to have no joy in their souls! Must be awful to see problems wherever you look.
