To be shocked watching back kids movies from my childhood with DD

DD is 6 and we watch quite a few films together, mixture of old and new. Last Halloween I was so excited to watch a film from my childhood, decided against hocus pocus but went with Casper. Well, turns out not once but TWICE Eric idle's character shouts BITCH at Carrigan. (She's is tbf but a bit much for a Pg film).

Just sat down to watch Charlie and the chocolate factory (from 2005!) and mike teevee says 'even a retard could figure it out'. What the hell!

Any other corkers you've come across watching back your childhood films?

There are lots of examples like that, but the worst in my opinion is the film ‘Little Rascals’

so much wrong with that I don’t know where to start

GingerLiberalFeminist · 17/02/2025 17:15

I rewatched Home Alone last year and frankly found myself shocked and wincing at the amount of violence inflicted on the wet bandits 😂

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 17/02/2025 17:21

@GingerLiberalFeminist OT but bloody hate home alone as a adult for all the plot holes that I now cannot unsee!

Yes some of the scenes in that are too much for me

I've only seen that once or twice when I was young, I wonder if it's worth a rewatch

When I watched Grease for the first time in about 30 years, I was horrified by the way they treated Eugene.

Grease prompted me to ask my mum what a virgin was when I was about 5

My youngest is now a teenager (13) and it’s a minefield sitting down to watch some of the old classics with him.
I went for a safe option the other night, trains planes and automobiles - all fine pretty much until Steve Martin goes off on a rampage and uses the word fucking about 20 times in a minute 😂
to be fair I don’t mind the odd bit of swearing in stuff and it was a 15 so my own fault!
But I do agree, and if anyone has any recommendations for any old classics to watch with nothing too hardcore I’m all ears.

Can I ask what you find problematic with little rascals? It's beloved by my kids. My middle son went through a phase a few yrs back, watched it everyday for about 6 months.

I never understood why people thing Greese is a family show. Quite apart from the whole teenage pregnancy storyline, I hate the message it gives when Sandy basically totally changes herself to get the boy.

BeaAndBen · 17/02/2025 17:32

That’s because you are watching PG films, not U films. A film with a PG rating can have limited swear words. The rule of thumb was something that could be watched by “a reasonable 8 year old”, I think.

Local authorities could overrule ratings for films shown in their area. Mrs Doubtfire was a PG in most places and a 12 in a few because there’s a joke about the ex wife chipping her teeth on a vibrator. Some local councils felt that was too much for a PG rating.

There was a long running joke in the 80s and 90s about the “Spielberg PG” - watch Jurassic Park or the heart ripping scene from Temple Of Doom and you’ll see what they meant. Those films had things no other director could get away with in a PG.

If you want no swearing, stick to U.

rashdecisi0n · 17/02/2025 17:34

I'm not remotely bothered by swearing, but I remember being surprised to see "bloody" being used multiple times in Harry Potter. I'm not sure whether that is transfered to the film script or not.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 17/02/2025 17:35

@Picklepower not sure if your after recommendations but Fly Away Home starring a young Anna Paquin is a lovely film about a father and daughter who adopt a family of geese and fly gliders to lead them south for winter. I haven't seen it for ages but I don't remember any use of "bitch" getting bandied about.

stayathomer · 17/02/2025 17:41

Years ago Beethoven 2 when the daughter gets locked into a bedroom by a guy who wants to have sex with her (the kids were watching it for ‘all the doggies’😅)

Yeah but you don't actually see the nail go in his foot! 😆

I hated it as a child for exactly that reason and thought it was a terrible message even when the other girls loved it. I was probably a bit sanctimonious even as a child though!

saveforthat · 17/02/2025 17:45

I was a bit shocked when I rematches Gremlins recently. The mother putting a gremlin in the microwave and other violence.

Itwasacceptableinthe80zz · 17/02/2025 17:45

I still love Home Alone though!

saveforthat · 17/02/2025 17:45

Rewatched not rematched.

🤣🤣🤣 I remember screeching “she’s a real pussy wagon” around the house when I was around 10 after watching Grease. I loved that film, didn’t even occur to me that it was rude.

ItGhoul · 17/02/2025 17:48

PG films aren’t meant to be universally suitable for all ages. If you want zero chance of even mildly offensive content you need to look for a U rating, not a PG. Casper is probably a PG because it has the word ‘bitch’ in it, not despite it.

However, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves used to be a PG and includes Christian Slater’s character saying ‘Well fuck me, he cleared it’ at one point as well, and a rape attempt by Alan Rickman’s Sheriff of Nottingham on Maid Marian. It was a PG for almost 20 years and was only upped to a 12 as recently as 2019!

Why does everyone always ignore that Danny also changes everything about him to be the best possible man for Sandy? I agree there are huge issues with Grease but she isn’t the only one making changes

Gremlins was a 15 when it was originally released. It’s now a 12A so certainly not intended as a film for young kids.
