I fancy a fresh start - and am thinking of moving here / would love opinions

I wouldn't. So full of tourists.
What is appealing to you?

Sixpence39 · 16/02/2025 19:59

Camden town is rough. High st way too busy and really, really loud problem with people experiencing homelessness on the streets, drug/drunk people passed out everywhere around the station area. Not a pleasant place. Go to Kentish town or Tufnell park. Really close to camden but lovely, vibrant and calm places to live.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 16/02/2025 20:01

I was about to say I’d love to live in Camden, but with the previous replies, maybe not.

DragonBalls · 16/02/2025 20:01

Loud, grimy, busy, edgy. Quite fun to visit, especially if you are a teenager, but I wouldn’t want to live there. It’s also no entry to the tube sometimes at the weekend due to the crowds.

Spidey66 · 16/02/2025 20:03

Lovely to visit, not so great to live past the age of 25. Noisy, busy, full of tourists, lots of drunkenness and drug use.

BleachedJumper · 16/02/2025 20:04

Very busy, quite a lot of low level crime (phone thefts/muggings) a lot of homelessness and drug issues.

It was where my first love lived in 1985 Grin

and I want to feel young - got good memories of that relationship

Well you did ask !!!

Camden Town itself is quite dirty, busy and noisy as previous posters have said. Belsize Park/Hampstead slightly further up the Northern Line are fantastic albeit pricey. They are relatively near Camden Town so would allow you easy access without having to live there!

BarkLife · 16/02/2025 20:09

I used to live in Tufnell Park, just off Camden Road. Quick bus to Camden or walk to Holloway Road.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 16/02/2025 20:10

So busy and grim IME. I hate going there but had to go fairly often for work in the early mornings and it was bloody awful. Drunk people passed out in stoops, heavy police presence. I wouldn't want to live there! (Especially as it's also expensive, so many nicer places within your budget!)

VyeBrator · 16/02/2025 20:13

It's my favourite day out in the nice weather.

I wouldn't live there though.

As a PP said it can be tough seeing the beggars and drug addicts passed out in front of the station and all down the high street.

Heartbreaking actually.

pinkstripeycat · 16/02/2025 20:15

Awww I understand your reason OP.

I met my first love in 1987. DH and I are moving to his village next year.

Stayed good friends with first love until he died a few years ago.

hmmyeahidontthinkso · 16/02/2025 20:37

The canal is nice but I find the whole area a bit theme park-y now. Rite of passage for London teens of course. Are you thinking or buying or renting there? I don't think it's the nicest residential area.

JHound · 16/02/2025 20:38

I would love to live there but my bank account won’t let me.

Rent first then buy

I would never, ever live there. It's got a really aggressive vibe.

BellaEllaWella · 16/02/2025 20:43

Great in the noughties as a twenty something - wouldn’t now unless it was veering towards Primrose Hill. What about top end of Kentish Town/ Parliament Hill/ Tufnell Park?

MissKittyFantastico84 · 16/02/2025 20:45

My friend and I still laugh about the time we were walking back to Camden Town tube after a dinner out, probably about 10pm, quiet weeknight in January, and a drunken homeless man yelled "HERE THEY ARE THEN! Here they go on their LESBIAN TOUR OF LONDON!" at us.

Just a spectacular heckle. Very Camden.

Me too! It's really fab! Highly recommend, OP and it's only a short walk to Camden

Firawla · 16/02/2025 20:58

Well if you have your sentimental reasons and want to then why not! if you’re renting first you’ll soon see if you feel happy with it and want to stay long term

I also used to live in Camden but it was 20 years ago so can’t really comment now. I also lived further down past Tufnell Park as a few people mentioned, I was more over Holloway Road way and actually really liked that area at that time. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, rent and see how you get on

Ivesaidenough · 16/02/2025 21:01

I'm s bit shocked at so many people recommending Tufnell Park. I think it's really grotty. If you can afford Primrose Hill I'd go there.

So did I! Well Holloway actually....Dalmeny Ave.

Holloway was a great place to live. Minutes from Camden, excellent public transport, but cheaper than Camden, Islington etc

hazelnutvanillalatte · 16/02/2025 21:05

Born in Camden and still live there. I love it. Very accessible, central, good access to shops, vibrant local community. Close to Regent's Park and Primrose Hill. Close to v good hospitals. Downsides - busy, crowded, tourists, and the soul of it is dead - the market, Hawley Wharf development, all that is awful in my opinion.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 16/02/2025 21:06

I used to live in Camden Town and it’s noisy, dirty and intense-I loved it! But I was in my 20s, couldn’t do it now. Belize Park would be wonderful!

youve987456 · 16/02/2025 21:20

Where do you live now? I've lived in different areas of London but would never live in Camden. I find Camden high st grotty and there are so many nicer places to live in London. Could you live in an area of London that is nicer but close to Camden? Somewhere like Angel or Highbury?
If you don't live in London or the middle of somewhere like Manchester or Birmingham now then I wouldn't recommend packing up and moving straight to London without giving it a short term go first. I love it but many people who aren't from here find it brutal.
