Reasonable length of time to clean bathroom?

bathromwoes · 16/02/2025 08:32

Please help me asses whether IABU.

How long would you say is reasonable to do a "deep clean" of a family bathroom?

It's a small room; toilet, sink, shower over bath. Tiled floor. Panel sheets around bath/shower.

It's becoming an increasing issue between DH and I, although I accept symptomatic of bigger things!

Thanks!

I need to clean my bathroom today, Im wondering now if I'm doing it wrong, I was thinking about 15 minutes for what sounds a similar room

A deep clean would involve washing any skirting boards, scrubbing grout and tiles, cleaning shelves in cupboards, washing windows inside etc ..... I don't know how anyone is doing that in 15 mins.

I'm impressed at all the 15-20 min comments! For me, to deep-clean our reasonably small bathroom usually takes a good hour at least.

Cleaning the toilet; wiping the mirror, window, tops of shelves and cabinets; bleaching and scrubbing bath, sink and taps; scrubbing the tiles around the bath; taking the shower curtain down to be washed; cleaning the floor and skirting boards... 20 minutes definitely wouldn't cut it!

Same! Small bathroom but I take everything out and off shelves etc

wherearemypastnames · 16/02/2025 08:58

I think we would try and never need to deep clean the bathroom - rather thoroughly clean often

We don't have things like cupboards with tops and insides to clear , we don't have hidden corners

So wiping surfaces is usually enough not scrubbing. The room is small - the skirting takes less than a minute to dust or wash , same with the sink
The soap on the shower screen can take a couple of minutes

discdiscsnap · 16/02/2025 08:59

To clean toilet/sink/bath about 15 minutes

To do above plus tiles, floor, skirting 30-45 minutes depending on bathroom size

researchers3 · 16/02/2025 09:00

10 - 15 mins but I'd only do half a job probably! And would do the floors on a different day when I'd vacuumed.

Blobbitymacblob · 16/02/2025 09:02

It depends on so many factors. If it’s wiped clean daily, probably 10 mins.
If it’s cleaned weekly about 20 mins.
If there’s build up of soap scum, toilet stains, urine in the grout, maybe an hour,

But what’s a “deep clean”? In an adhd hyperfocus I could spend 5- 6 hours, scrubbing the grout with a toothbrush, cleaning the light fittings, air vents, cistern, drains, . People use the phrase “deep clean” here but I think it means “reasonably decent clean”

Fargo79 · 16/02/2025 09:02

These replies are eye opening 👀

15 minutes?? A deep clean for me would take several hours. Deep cleaning means cleaning and sanitising absolutely EVERYTHING. Cleaning vents, cleaning the hair traps and plugs, descaling the showerhead, scrubbing the grout, emptying and cleaning the cabinet, cleaning the door, doorframe, skirting etc, cleaning the walls, getting into every single crevice and nook and cranny.

15 mins is scrubbing the loo and giving everything a quick wipe down. Definitely not a deep clean.

WingsofRain · 16/02/2025 09:02

It depends entirely on your physical ability. It took me two hours to clean our bathroom and separate toilet yesterday and it wasn’t a “deep clean”. I’m paraplegic and it’s very difficult to do that sort of work sitting on the floor.

As others have said, how much cleaning needs to be done will also affect it, but I’d definitely say 15 minutes is utterly unrealistic.

Mylovelygreendress · 16/02/2025 09:03

So what’s the argument?

TickingAlongNicely · 16/02/2025 09:03

It will depend completely on what you actually do. It takes a good five minutes just to clean our shower plug trap.(involving taking it apart with a svrewdrovsr, cleaning the parts and putting it back together) but there's three long haired women/girls.).

People have very different ideas of cleaning!

JaneBoleynViscountessRochford · 16/02/2025 09:04

Wow how much stuff do people have in their bathrooms that they need to take it all off shelves to clean? In our shower caddy it’s shower gel/shampoo/conditioner/my razor/face cleanser. In the kids bathroom they each have a shower gel and then a shared shampoo/conditioner. The downstairs one has nothing hanging around as people only really use the toilet.

I hate a bathroom with lots of ‘stuff’ around, it looks messy and makes it harder (and judging by this thread a lot longer) to clean.

user1471538283 · 16/02/2025 09:04

Our bathroom is about the same size but it's old and difficult to clean. It takes me about 30 minutes if I've already sprayed products. We don't have lots of stuff out though. Not that it looks that much different once you've washed your hands in that horrible sink ...

Dogthespot · 16/02/2025 09:05

although I accept symptomatic of bigger things!

probably better to start a thread about this then, rather than ask a bizarre question like this that’s somewhat dependent on the state of the bathroom and standards

Luckily my loo isn't an operating theatre so a deep clean for me is a decent scrub down:
Loo 3 mins
Sink 2 mins
Shower 7 mins
Floor 3 mins
maybe 5 mins extra to empty and wipe down a cupboard or wipe the skirting but we seem to survive despite my laxness.

DilemmaDelilah · 16/02/2025 09:06

Small bathroom here, with acrylic panels rather than wall tiles. In good nick - no mould or anything (that's why acrylic panels!).

Probably 30-40 minutes, as that includes standing in the bath to clean the acrylic panels which go up to the ceiling. Usually 10 minutes - shower used to spray the panels and rinse out the bath after cleaning. Leave bleach in loo while doing the rest of the cleaning, spray cleaner and microfiber cloth for sink, bath and tops/taps. Clean loo. Change towels. Mop floor.

If I had to deal with mouldy grout and yucky bits it would take me considerably longer.

Bjorkdidit · 16/02/2025 09:07

Yes, I think we need to know the background here.

It would probably take at least an hour or two to clean our bathroom to MN standards, but if you're one of those people who are wiping and bleaching daily in addition to a weekly 'proper' clean, so it's never actually visibly dirty then obviously far less.

What is actually necessary is also worth considering. If you're expecting him to scrub the walls each week, then that's a bit much tbh.

wherearemypastnames · 16/02/2025 09:08

See I just couldn't let a bathroom get to the stage where the grout or door needs scrubbing rather than a wipe over

If there is hair in the traps , it gets taken out by whoever has the moulting hair at the time , not left to accumulate

We don't have cupboards in the bathroom - just a single shelf in each case so that's easy to wipe

Perhaps that's the difference - little and often or occasional deep cleans that therefor take longer

InTheRainOnATrain · 16/02/2025 09:08

Bathroom design definitely comes into it! I can definitely deep clean mine in 20 minutes. We have one drawer under the sink to hold products but no cupboards or shelving, no skirting boards, massive tiles so grout is minimal and is also grey coloured so a quick wipe and it looks good, a water softener to keep limescale at bay, wet room style flooring can do the lot with the steam mop and there’s no tray or crevices of an enclosure to clean just one piece of fixed glass to stop spray that can be wiped in about 2 minutes, the toilet and sink are wall hung so the mop goes right under it, there’s one small window but the frame is not ornate and there’s no window sill so can wipe it in seconds. The old bathroom design had a claw footed tub you couldn’t fit the mop under but couldn’t get round the back of, a shower enclosure with sliding doors, a toilet with a million crevices behind it and I could spend an hour cleaning that and it would still look grubby.

Archimedipeligo · 16/02/2025 09:11

Once every two weeks, 15-20 mins max

  • descale the taps / shower head
  • spray and clean down the bath
  • remove all products and plants from shelves and clean them
  • clean the sink and toilet
  • hoover the floor before mopping, go and on hands and knees for behind pedestals
  • spray and wipe wall tiles
  • clean the inside of the window and the big mirror
  • change towels
  • clean the hooks / toilet roll holder / door handle
  • clean the skirting & door crevices

The only thing i don't do is a specific scrub of the grout but just a normal rub with a cloth is keeping it fine. I could probably make it 30 minutes if I was slower but honestly, my bathroom is pretty sparkling.

Even when I've gone big grout cleans it's been 30 mins max - let the products do the work and it's super easy. I cannot fathom ever spending more than an hour!

LavenderBlue19 · 16/02/2025 09:12

A proper deep clean - scrubbing the grout, cleaning all the tiles etc takes a good two hours. This would get done maybe once or twice a year though.

A regular clean - clean enough for visitors - maybe 20 minutes, at most?

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 16/02/2025 09:13

20 mins that's walls, shower screen , bath , toilet , sink , shelf , taps and floor

HelpMeGetThrough · 16/02/2025 09:15

I do ours everyday and takes about 20 minutes. We don't have shelves or anything out, as it stored in a cupboard. Bathroom is floor to ceiling tiled with glass shower cubicle and vinyl flooring.

Everything gets cleaned daily.

Rugbyrover · 16/02/2025 09:16

4 people, one bathroom. Products everywhere. People who flood the floor after a shower and so need to use the mould stuff. Won't mention the toilet. Definitely 30 mins, min.

Hollowvoice · 16/02/2025 09:21

What is it you're arguing about OP?

DiscoBeat · 16/02/2025 09:22

Probably around an hour including scrubbing the grout and cleaning all the walls and getting in all the crevices of the Victorian style radiator/towel. Also the floor and half the wall tiles are hand made so aren't completely even so that takes more cleaning. The windows are wood with multiple small frames so again they are more fiddly to clean.
