Has Valentine's Day gone too far?

Lighthearted but still really questioning it more this year.
My DH and I don't do valentine's day, just too over commercialised etc but I mostly thought it was aimed at couples, crushes etc
This year I've seen young school kids giving gifts out (some have been quite expensive for a 5 year old) and even a card from your dog/cat on valentine's day. It all feels a bit barmy?!
Not sure what I missed, but when did it valentine's start to involve classmates and pets?

It's madness isn't it! No idea when it changed, it feels like the 1st year to involve children, pets etc in this overly commercialised way

My DH offered the only chair to me at the dentist this afternoon and said "happy valentines day love" That was sufficient for me!

I will now have to tell my cats that their failure to provide Valentines gifts has disappointed me 🤣

I agree. Although my 6yr old dd came out of school today with a card and a love heart box of jelly beans from a little boy who apparently has talked about her at home since day one. It melted my heart a bit 😂

Depending on where you live and the traditions you follow it's been celebrated by children (in addition to adults) for decades.
Who cares though?
Either join in or don't. None of it is compulsory.

Yes, the cats are now on the naughty step

Bah humbug! I remember getting a Valentine's card and a packet of sweets from a boy in middle school in the Seventies. So kids swapping cards is nothing new.

loropianalover · 14/02/2025 23:52

In schools I think it should be a simple card, token bag of jellies. I love Valentine’s Day but you do see silly stuff now pushed by the parents and there’s really no need. Kids just end up seeing it as getting the ‘best’ present, rather than a display of feelings/affection.

If you’re an adult and you and your partner want to swap big expensive gifts, I’m all for it! I just think it should be more simple for kids.

Kids have always done Valentine’s Day, it was one of the key things to be stressed about in high school!!

I think life is too short and winter is too long. Take any excuse to celebrate anything. I go more in for Galentine’s than Valentines, this week I had a meal with a group of girlfriends and I also gave a chocolate gift to a mate.

To be fair, I have given them extra vitamin loaded dreamies this morning, so I am doubly peeved. Particularly since fat orange boy will inevitably decide to settle on my chest as soon as I fall asleep.
