To think soup isn’t a real meal?

It’s just flavoured water. If you need bread to make it filling, then it wasn’t a meal to begin with.

Do you mean bread?

K0OLA1D · 13/02/2025 12:29

YABU

We like soup and bread here. Have it very often.

cerisierblossom · 13/02/2025 12:29

YABU. It's a nutritionally sound meal. Maybe a little low on protein, but it's fine.

GrandHighPoohbah · 13/02/2025 12:29

I often have soup for lunch. 🤷‍♂️

Maggiethecat · 13/02/2025 12:29

Depends on what you put in there - you can make it as hearty or not as you wish.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/02/2025 12:30

I like really thick, lumpy soup. Almost like stew. If it's very blended and watery it is more like a drink than food. I wouldn't ever order it as a starter either. But home made chicken and veg with big chunks of potato and carrots etc is pretty nice.

YouDeserveBetterSoAskForIt · 13/02/2025 12:30

It depends. Some soups are very chunky and full of veg and protein. I make a chicken and veg soup that is definitely a full meal (although I am greedy so enjoy it with bread).

But some soups like tomato do actually need something else in my opinion, like nice bread or a toastie.

YoungGunsHavingSomeFunCrazyLadiesKeepEmOnTheRun · 13/02/2025 12:30

I make soup all the time, definitely a real meal and not just flavoured water.

Coffeeishot · 13/02/2025 12:31

That's like saying a stew is flavoured water with bits in and I'm sure people eat bread or potatoes with that ? I wouldn't eat soup for an evening meal but for lunch it's definitely a meal even if you have bread with it.

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 13/02/2025 12:31

You've obviously never had lentil soup in Scotland!

MrsPernicious · 13/02/2025 12:32

@FunLimeOrca , I think your problem may be that you don't know how to make a hearty soup.

Bjorkdidit · 13/02/2025 12:32

If you think soup is flavoured water, you're eating the wrong soup.

I've just had a bowl of soup I made yesterday from chicken thighs and stock, butter beans, a bit of orzo, grated carrot and courgette, spring onions and dill. It was very filling so didn't require any bread. The same food without the stock would be considered a meal so I don't see how the addition of a thin sauce changes this.

JoyousPinkPeer · 13/02/2025 12:33

Depends what you put in it obviously.

My go to is: chicken, onion, brocolli, cabbage, carrots, leak and maybe some pulses. So it's a full on nutritious meal.

RedRosie · 13/02/2025 12:34

Tomato soup and a cheese toastie. Food of the Gods.

MinnieBalloon · 13/02/2025 12:34

So what is it then?

Meadowfinch · 13/02/2025 12:34

Try pea and ham, or leek and potato, or broccoli and stilton. Or a chunky chicken and veg soup.

My favourite is Cajun Bean Soup, which has celery, onion, green pepper, cannellini beans, tomatoes and bacon. With a little Tabasco sauce.

Filling, hydrating, packed with vitamins, delicious, great for using up veggies on a weekend. 😊 And the most effective thing I've found for seeing off a cold.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/02/2025 12:35

You need better soup recipes OP.
A good soup involves a bit of chewing.

wherearemypastnames · 13/02/2025 12:36

Soup is of course a meal - a light vegetable soup for lunch or something heartier with lentils or meat for something more substantial

Have a second bowlful if one isn't enough

Cheeringmeup · 13/02/2025 12:36

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 13/02/2025 12:31

Exactly - my gran made soup you could dance on! It was lovely.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 13/02/2025 12:38

I made leek and potato soup yesterday, thick enough for the wooden spoon to stand up in the pan 😀 Just had a bowl for lunch and will keep me full till dinner later.

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 13/02/2025 12:40

Don't eat it then.

NancyBellaDonna · 13/02/2025 12:40

Our lunch today is red lentil soup with flatbreads. I have added rice and bulgher wheat to the soup and some feta. It's not watery at all. (edited typo)

My mum used to make a soup with potatoes, carrots and swede with split peas and barley and she called it a 'knife and fork soup'.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/02/2025 12:42

You are eating the wrong soup.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/02/2025 12:42

My homemade soups are delicious and nutritionally excellent.

Packet, dehydrated chicken noodle, not so much. If other people enjoy them though, non of my business.

Runnersandtoms · 13/02/2025 12:42

I would consider it a small meal/lunch if I was having a 'proper meal' later in the,day but not as the main meal of the day unless it contained lots of noodles/pasta/potatoes.
