To think soup isn’t a real meal?

It’s just flavoured water. If you need bread to make it filling, then it wasn’t a meal to begin with.

Tomato soup and a cheese toastie. Food of the Gods.

Can't beat it yummy.

OP make your own, much nicer.

Cavello · 13/02/2025 12:43

You are being very unreasonable, nothing nicer than a bowl of soup. In fact I came across my favourite soup from a Mumsnet post about soup wasn't a meal for dinner.

Finnish Salmon Soup (Lohikeitto) – Skinny Spatula

Warming, filling and utterly delicious — these are the adjectives I'd use to describe this Finnish salmon soup (lohikeitto).

Try pea and ham, or leek and potato, or broccoli and stilton. Or a chunky chicken and veg soup.

My favourite is Cajun Bean Soup, which has celery, onion, green pepper, cannellini beans, tomatoes and bacon. With a little Tabasco sauce.

Filling, hydrating, packed with vitamins, delicious, great for using up veggies on a weekend. 😊 And the most effective thing I've found for seeing off a cold.

I make a spicy bean soup with most of those ingredients but I also use a can or two of spicy mixed beans from Lidl/Aldi for more bulk and it's lovely.

I've just had a brimming bowl of homemade minestrone soup and it was definitely a meal.

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 13/02/2025 12:46

I think you’re confusing soup with broth.

Colacubegirl · 13/02/2025 12:47

Your logic doesn’t make any sense.

Would you say a chicken breast isn’t a meal becuase you have a to add a side of potatos and veg?

Would you say a bolognaise isn’t a meal because you have to add pasta?

So why say a soup isn’t a meal because you most likely have it with bread.

But… cup a soups… they’re a snack imo.

IBloodyLoveMyBlanket · 13/02/2025 12:47

As a starter it's the worst of both worlds, not enjoyable to eat but so filling you don't want anything else afterwards.

pointythings · 13/02/2025 12:47

Soup can be many things. Don't knock it til you have had a proper hearty one.

Eightdayz · 13/02/2025 12:48

Peeps on MN get het up over the strangest things.

Lemonade2011 · 13/02/2025 12:49

I agree, I don’t really enjoy a lot of soups and they don’t feel like I’ve eaten. Never known anyone else think that though
occasionally I’ll fancy a really nice soup from a place we go but generally I don’t have soup

Goatinthegarden · 13/02/2025 12:50

I cannot stand soup…and I’m really not a fussy eater. I’ll eat anything, even soup if someone else makes it.

But it’s a pain to eat, I’d rather have something I can eat with a knife and fork (or my hands!). All that hot liquid makes me feel overly full and too warm. I’d never make, or order, soup.

The only bit I really enjoy is the bread part.

NancyBellaDonna · 13/02/2025 12:50

Some splendid soup recipes on that skinnyspatular.com website. @Carvello Nothing watery at all.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 13/02/2025 12:51

You know you're meant add other ingredients to the stock, right?

wherearemypastnames · 13/02/2025 12:52

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 13/02/2025 12:46

I think you’re confusing soup with broth.

Well you can make soup by over blending broth

MyDogsLoveCafes · 13/02/2025 12:52

I make thick chunky soups that are like stews so they’re definitely a meal. We put carbs with other meals though without saying they’re not a meal, so not sure why it matters if a soup does need bread to be a meal. Weird post.

Printedword · 13/02/2025 12:53

It's lunch and comes with bread. I do occasionally do a stove top chunky soup that's a main meal stew/soup and doesn't come with bread or on the side veggies, but I consider most soups to be lunch

Stresshead84x · 13/02/2025 12:54

I think a good chicken and veg or minestrone with nice bread is definitely a meal. Some soups are just snacks/starters.

BusySittingDown · 13/02/2025 12:54

I bloody love soup. Food of the Gods!

Coconutter24 · 13/02/2025 12:55

I don’t have soup as my main evening meal but I would have it for lunch

meatyryvita · 13/02/2025 12:56

you're making the wrong types of soups! Pumpkin soup (we do a one with Thai-style flavouring) and lentil soups can be incredibly filling.

arethereanyleftatall · 13/02/2025 12:58

Bizarre post.
Kinda depends what you put in it op!

mondaytosunday · 13/02/2025 12:58

Flavoured water? What kind of soup are you eating?
I make two soups regularly and both are filling - though they are always nicer with bread (what meal isn't) they are also filling in themselves. One is a thick butternut squash soup and the other is cabbage soup. Full of flavour and keeps me satisfied until dinner.
It sure is gave it for dinner though - I want something more robust in the evening.

TimPat · 13/02/2025 12:59

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 13/02/2025 12:31

You've obviously never had lentil soup in Scotland!

Indeed. Having some for lunch in work as we speak and I could stand my spoon up in it! Lentils, bacon, lots of chunky veg, definitely a meal.

LurcherMumma · 13/02/2025 13:00

I probably put as much water in soup as I do in a bread dough 😂
Ours are mainly veg.

Do you mean cup-a-soup?

Ladamesansmerci · 13/02/2025 13:01

Homemade soup is usually packed full of veggies and fresh ingredients. How is it any different than having stew and bread?

Soups full of things like lentils etc are plenty filling and nutritious!
