To think soup isn’t a real meal?

It’s just flavoured water. If you need bread to make it filling, then it wasn’t a meal to begin with.

I have soup for lunch all the time - hearty soup - without bread.

BunnyLake · 14/02/2025 11:31

It doesn’t matter that OP has ran off. This thread has legs of it’s own without them. I love home made soups.

My foster son's fiancee is staying with us right now and made us traditional Lunar New Year soup this week. Believe me, it's a meal.

sprigatito · 14/02/2025 16:19

@Sheknowsaboutme lardypants? Are you 12? What a shame, on such a lovely thread.

Hankunamatata · 14/02/2025 16:19

Northern Irish vegetable soup. 😋 very very filling loaded with pulses and veg

Biffbaff · 14/02/2025 16:25

I agree 💯 , so much so that I have considered making a thread about this myself. I will die on this hill.

crankytoes · 14/02/2025 18:00

Isn't that like saying 'if it needed potatoes / rice / noodles then it wasn't a meal in the first place.

It's like saying Bolognese isn't a meal as it needs pasta

When I read American novels they have soup with some kind of cheese thing. Sorry forgot name of it. Do they dunk it like a biscuit?

A grilled cheese sandwich?

Yes, it is dunked (in tomato soup), and delicious.

MaggieBsBoat · 14/02/2025 20:04

Are you German @FunLimeOrca ? German soup is endlessly awful.

Ah I've never had a grilled cheese sandwich. Will have to Google how to make.

Ruthietuthie · 14/02/2025 20:08

I make an Italian wedding soup which has little chicken meatballs in it, plus a Thai red curry soup with either chicken or prawns and noodles. Both are definitely a full meal. A can of Heinz tomato, meanwhile, is a light meal/lunch and even with a toasted cheese sandwich with it, wouldn't feel satisfying for dinner.

Screamingabdabz · 14/02/2025 20:13

Omg yes. It’s a lumpy drink at best. The only saving grace is to have big hunks of buttery bread with it but soup on its own? Just no.

CatCaretaker · 14/02/2025 20:39

Completely agree OP, though apparently we're in the minority. Soup tastes nice, it works to whet the appetite but if all I ate for lunch was soup I'd have a hunger headache by the time I went back to work. I don't understand how someone can have just soup and call it a meal.

A soup that is more of a stew, with pulses, noodles etc. is pushing the limits of a true soup imo, but in those cases could be considered a meal.

Isn't a grilled cheese sandwich just a cheese toastie?

You've obviously never had lentil soup in Scotland!

Or a bowl of scotch broth with extra broth mix, mmmm 😋

HoraceCope · 15/02/2025 06:11

my soup is full of vegetables, and the one i made this week has cannelloni beans in it, so there is your protein!
very healthy

Cel77 · 15/02/2025 07:06

You can have it as thick or thin as you want. Beans, potatoes, rice ,pasta will all bulk it up.

StonwEd · 15/02/2025 07:41

Bjorkdidit · 13/02/2025 12:32

If you think soup is flavoured water, you're eating the wrong soup.

I've just had a bowl of soup I made yesterday from chicken thighs and stock, butter beans, a bit of orzo, grated carrot and courgette, spring onions and dill. It was very filling so didn't require any bread. The same food without the stock would be considered a meal so I don't see how the addition of a thin sauce changes this.

do you have a recipe or do you eyeball it? This sounds incredible 😃

Drylogsonly · 17/02/2025 21:06

I make a veggie soup, it’s so filling no bread requires!

BeAzureAnt · 20/02/2025 12:59

If you make pumpkin soup, try adding some peanut butter to it. Game changer.
