Can an employer you attend in person for a DBS check?

I have just got job with a University two and a hour drive away. I took it on the condition it would be mostly remote. The HR at the university are insisting I come down in person for my DBS check as it's a legal requirement. Everyone I've spoken to says they did their DBS online for their jobs. Has anyone else had this experience?

Why do you need a DBS?

If it’s an enhanced one they need to see your original documentation in person I think.

Local government- I’ve had to do my last two DBS checks in person - as they don’t offer it online.

Springadorable · 11/02/2025 21:33

Have they done all their ID checks? They'll need to see you plus your ID in person to do the DBS. If they've already done that then they don't need you there. But as it's mostly remote they will ask you in occasionally...

They need to see the original ID documents and you.

Some people would do it with scans/video calls.

MrsBungle · 11/02/2025 21:34

They need to verify your original documents. During Covid there was special dispensation to do it online but not now.

Littlefish · 11/02/2025 21:39

They need to see the original documents I'm afraid.

Thank you. It might be.

Yes they have to see your original documents in person.

CanOfMangoTango · 11/02/2025 21:42

As above. The form itself can all be done online but they need to verify original documents themselves.

Was it a remote interview?

LIZS · 11/02/2025 21:43

Someone needs to certify that they have seen original copies of your documents, You could send them but most don't trust originals to the post. iD checks can be over a video call.

I've been in post for ages and recently renewed my enhanced DBS. I work from different bases but had to physically go and visit HR to have my documents verified. It was less annoying as I'm actually employed by them. Presumably you will need to take a day off from your current job. Annoying but likely necessary. I did wonder if I could post the documents but wouldn't actually have wanted to risk them going astray.

Someone has to see you holding your ID, so passport or driving licence and verify it’s you, take photocopies and stamp them as verified copies. Always in person at every uni I’ve worked at.

Yes it was remote. Sounds like it's common practice.

I have renewed my enhanced DBS online in the last few months, I had to hold the documents up to the camera and send copies.
